How Soon After Eating Gluten Do You Have Breakouts?

I've searched the posts on this forum, but I can't seem to find a good answer to this question. I was diagnosed with DH four years ago, and started on a high dapsone dosage together with the gluten-free diet. I stepped my dapsone dose down over time and haven't taken any for about five months.

 

I believe I'm pretty good about the gluten-free diet, but sometimes I slip up and get a small breakout. I'm interested in knowing how soon after eating gluten do other DH-folks see breakouts? This will help me pinpoint what I ate that caused the breakout. My sense is that if I eat something with gluten during the day, I'll notice either during that night or the following morning. Do other people have the same experience?

Sorry, but there's no real answer to that. Everyone is different & I think a lot depends on how long you went undiagnosed & therefore how many antibodies were hiding under your skin, how long you've been strict gluten free, how sensitive you are and probably more variables enter the picture. 

I am ultra, ultra, unbelievably sensitive but did not always know that. Either that or I became more sensitive during the gluten-free journey. Who could really say? Anyway, I am 6+ years gluten-free now & for 1 year at least, I had not eaten anything that was processed. Everything was fresh food period! That was when I TRULY got rid of all the rash --- ALL OF IT. Now I've been trying to add foods back in, with failures & successes along the way. Slow going! One food at the time. I have been able to add almond flour but ONLY Barney Butter Almond Flour & I have been able to add Smuckers Natural Peanut Butter (peanuts & salt only). The Barney Butter Almond Butter was a bust for me --- the palm fruit oil in it got me -- that is a new food intolerance for me. I just tried Nutiva Coconut Flour (certified gluten-free) --- I used 3 Tbls. in a peanut butter cookie recipe that made 20 cookies. I ate those over about 7 days time & made another batch & in about 2 days began getting dh blisters & GI symptoms so it was a case of EXTREMELY low level continuous  exposure & it took a while to present.

My rash reacts within 3 minutes of consuming gluten, but as the person above stated reaction time may vary person to person.

Im the same way. Which is why low gluten foods, under 20ppm, should be labelled low gluten. Free of gluten means nothing, nada, no gluten. 

My rash comes up within 20 mins or so, definately within 24 hours. I have a few new patches, despite being very careful. I suspect I'll get worse unless my kids and husband stop eating gluten, and spraying the house with cookie crumbs. 

Im allergic to sulpha drugs, so no dapsone for me.

      Hi im from northern europe are blood type 0+ have celiac with code K900 on the paper from doctor, have low vitamin D and b12 and folate, zinc, manganese and high copper it say in test. The best food i have eaten for now is LCHF, i tried paleo but i was missing the dairy. And i love the cream in sauces. LCHF is good choice there is no grains in the dishes. It's completly gluten free lifestyle i say. Because i feel good to eat it.

      @Rogol72, dermatitis herpetiformis occurs in a minority of celiac patients and if the OP hasn't developed it yet I doubt it will show up in the future. I think it unwise to use a scare tactic that probably won't materialize in the OP's experience. It has a good chance of backfiring and having the opposite effect.

      Hi @trents, You're correct. The OP mentioned fatigue and vitamin deficiencies as the only symptoms at the time of diagnosis. Since the family are not taking him/her seriously and find them to be too fussy, I suggested showing them pictures of dermatitis herpetiformis as one of the consequences of not taking the gluten-free diet seriously ... would make life easier for him/her, and the family might begin to take his/her strict gluten-free diet more seriously. A picture says a thousand words and the shock factor of dermatitis herpetiformis blisters might have the desired effect. The OP did say ... "How do you deal with people close to you who just refuse to understand? Are there any resources anyone could recommend for families that are short and easy to read?".  @sillyyak52, It might also help mentioning to your family that Coeliac Disease is genetic and runs in families. Any one of them could develop it in the future if they have the HLA DQ 2.5 gene. It was my own fault but it happens.
