Facial swelling

so glad I find this blog. I have been dealing with severe facial swelling  and sinus pressure for 3 years. Every time I eat my face disfigures and it makes me look really old as well. I was told my sinuses r fine, but my facial swelling effects my sinuses.  After reading this blog I decided to gluten free Monday. So it’s been 5 days. I don’t go to the gluten free section in stores, but i just stick to veggies, fruit and meat that are low in histamines. I have also started taking supplements: B6, vitamin C, Zinc,  digestive enzymes and probiotics. I feel a difference since a started this process, but I do still experience swelling in my face every time I eat. Now my swelling is not as bad as it has been but it’s still happening. When it happens I recheck my diet, seasonings i put in my food and drinks.  Can anyone give me any suggestions? How long did it take for your facial swelling go down?

Do you have Celiac disease?  Why is your face puffy?  There are so many reasons for a puffy face.  A gluten free first doesn’t fix everything

I would be more inclined to help if you could reconcile your post from 7 years ago in which you stated you had been having facial swelling for one year.

I never sent a post a year ago, I just found this website last night. I did get tested for an autoimmune disorder but it care back negative, but doctor told me my body was responding like a had the Celtic disease and he tested me for something else. I saw the sight mentioned that I may have this disorder, but it may show up negative. I got tested about 6 months ago. My face swelling and my sinuses are really bad too

Apologies! It was from someone else, not you. I am so sorry.

Have you checked to be sure there is no gluten in your supplements and probiotics?

Again, apologies for the earlier comment of mine.

I really should not speculate (but I probably will!), however, one thing stood out to me in your original post was that you are trying, it seems, two things at once: B vitamins, probiotics, etc and the gluten free diet. In order to better notice the efficacy (or lack) of any remedy or thing you may try, would it be better to only do one thing at a time? I don’t know, really; i’m just asking. Also, from commenters here on this site, it seems that the effect of a gluten-free diet can really vary. For some, the difference is instantaneous, but for others, it can take months, even years.

I'm sure people will start to weigh in soon, and here is where I should not be speculating!. But it does seem like you are having an allergic reaction, and that you might need to start getting very very deliberate, disciplined, and methodical with your diet. Meaning, paring way down: eating, for example, only one or two things exclusively for a few days - just to see. Could it be the salt? Could it be low thyroid? Could it be fructans?

I have never heard of this before, but please do stay with us and let us know.

I know my vitamins are gluten free and I am always eliminating things from my diet

I suggest getting tested for celiac disease if you suspect gluten could be an issue and have your doctor also test for a wheat allergy.    My facial swelling is due to allergic reactions and not celiac disease.

Addy Rookie

I’ve been tested for both and i have allergies, but nothing has ever made my face swell. My dr told me even though Celtic did not show up,I could still possibly have it that’s why he told me to go grain free

Oh I haven’t had a food allergy test

When my face swells, my tongue and eyes swell too.    So much that I can not speak well or even see.  Does this happen to you?

The form of the magnesium is important. Go for one that has high absorbability. Most of us opt for magnesium glycinate. Mag citrate is also good. Don't settle for the oxide forms. They aren't absorbed well and tend to have a laxative effect 'cause they just draw water into the colon a' la Milk of Magnesia. Costco is a good place to shop for things like that. Also, good bone and dental health involves vitamin D. Are you taking a dedicated D3 supplement? Have you had your D levels checked? In many ways, vitamin D is turning out to be a master vitamin of human metabolism and celiacs are often low on this one. What was the numerical score on your IGA along with the reference range? I can probably tell you whether it was TTG-IGA by the magnitude of the score. The only other likely option besides TTG-IGA would be Total IGA which usually has scores that range in the hundreds.  I do think it important for you to get a follow-up endoscopy/biopsy to check for healing of the villi. If that isn't happening like it should, you still are not absorbing nutrients well and that could easily explain your dental issues.

It doesn’t specify if it’s TTG I’m not sure how to tell for that. That would be so sad. We never eat out I try to be so strict. Yes many dental products have gluten! I only use ones that don’t on myself.    No follow up procedure has been done for healing. That is something I will ask about. Thank you for the suggestion.    I don’t take any Magnesium. What would be a good supplement?

Is that TTG-IGA that is slightly elevated? That could indicate you are still getting some gluten in your diet. That should be within normal range I would think if you were truly gluten free. As a dental professional have you looked into the issue of gluten in the products they use in your profession? There are threads on this forum and also articles I think dealing with that issue. Have you had a follow-up endoscopy to check for healing of the small bowel villi? Also, are you taking any magnesium supplements for bone and dental health? Very important. It works together with calcium.

I’ve had GI issues since I was a baby! They never did any testing and always said diet issues and constipation. Things got a lot worse when I hit 25, eventually got a diagnosis and I am currently 29. Yes, just recently saw my GI doctor in January and things looked pretty good. Very slightly elevated IgA but IgG was good. My ionized calcium is elevated too. I also have hashimotos but my TSH was good.

Do you have any sense of how long before your diagnosis the onset of your celiac disease may have been? For most of us, there are years that pass between the onset and finally getting a diagnosis and by that time damage has already been done to body systems. May we ask your age? Also, have you had any follow-up testing since diagnosis to check for celiac antibody levels or healing of the villi?
