Does this sound like glutening?

Hi all. 

 

Diagnosed in 2012 (biopsy and gene testing) and have been pretty fastidious about staying gluten free. Although over last 2 years I have branched out my list of places to eat where they do gluten-free meals. 

 

I have have been having what I think are exposures to gluten and symptoms but I’m not actually sure that is what it is. Does the following sound like a gluten exposure to you?

 

Symptoms in order of occurrence. 

Sore dry burning eyes

pain in eyes/head progressively gets worse over 8 ish hours to be really intense. Panadol does nothing 

then nausea sets in for an hour or so

then what can only be described as 2-4 total bowel evacuations. Normally the last one involves some mucas 

with in one hour of this bowel movement ending, the eye pain goes completely (actually starts to lift during the bowel movements)  and I return to almost normal. For 3-4 days after I get stressed easy and mild panic attacks. 

 

Then normal till the next time. 

 

Can anyone else relate to those symptoms? I don’t normally get bowel pain. I never did even before diagnosis though.

Welcome troykm,

There probably are people out there with exactly your symptoms when glutened.  Celiac disease has many symptoms and variations of symptom combinations   And symptoms can change over time and get worse or better.  Myself I get dry eyes from caffeine.   Not that caffeine has gluten, just that it can cause that symptom at least.

Try taking some Vitamin D for the dry eyes.

It is not uncommon for Celiac's to be low in Vitamin D.

see this article about Vitamin K and Vitamin D levels being low at the time of  a celiac diagnosis.

This study is in teens but it is probably higher for adults.

I had dry eyes myself and taking Vitamin D definitely helped it.

Vitamin D is own their list.

I would also add Magnesium as a Citrate or as a Glycinate to that list.

Also look in into Riboflavin (B-2) for migraines.

Here is research about it entitled "High-dose riboflavin treatment is efficacious in migraine prophylaxis: an open study in a tertiary care centre."

When your urine gets a bright yellow neon that glows in the dark you have enough B-2.

So basically a B-complex and Magnesium Citrate with meals or twice a day for at least 3 months will improve many of these symptom's plus Vitamin D for the dry eyes.

I hope this is helpful.  It is not going to help everybody, everything, or everyone but B-Vitamins are known to help celiac's especially when you have high homocysteine levels.

You can get too much of any Vitamin but B-Vitamins are water soluble and become low in 12 hours and  you can absorb more of them every 4 hours and why they are best taking 3/day for 3 months or 2/day which ever is easiest to do.  You can test this with B-2 (riboflavin) after 24 hours off of Riboflavin your urine's color will become a lighter color of yellow (less neon). .. a sign it is no longer bypassing in the kidneys into your urine.

And taken for that often/long usually is enough time to rebuild your bodies stores back up from the poor nutrition/absorption of/that celiacs have often and the fact that gluten free breads are not fortified with B-Vitamins the way gluten containing breads are make it important (in my mind) to do this for a round of 3 to 4 months to restore you missing B-Vitamins and Magnesium especially.

We also know Vitamin D and Vitamin K tends to be low too!

But luckily both Vitamin K and Vitamin D tends to correct themselves over time but a short low dose of 400 or 1000IU of Vitamin D of 3 to 6 months will probably improve your burning eyes if it is from Low Vitamin D levels.

It did mine.

Again I hope this is  helpful ******but it is not medical advice just some of the ways  I have supplemented.

      Trents, It's a good question. The experts I have spoken to have told me the distillation process does remove the offensive proteins. Again, I'm not the expert on that. I'm only reporting. I don't have any issue with distilled spirits that don't have any additives. That said, maybe there is something else at play here? Good question for the forum.

      I'm wondering if this is the same issue some celiacs have with distilled liquors. The complete gluten molecule is too large and heavy to to travel up with the vapor but if their are gluten fragments created by the heat, they may not be and the immune systems of some celiacs still recognize it as gluten. I have no scientific proof for this, just a thought because we have so many forum contributors who still react to these "gluten removed" products.

      Thanks, Scott and Trents. Scott, tastes vary of course. The metallic taste may just be me. As to the filtration efficacy, I can only add that the micron level to remove a smaller protein chain must be pretty tight. What about the impact of hydrolization on the R5 test? I've been told it presents a challenge. Trents, thanks for the clarification. I did not draw this distinction, but can. I honestly didn't perceive the nuance.  Appreciate the feedback from you both.

      I don’t think it matters much if you trust the supplier, I get them from a Welsh company maesyffin mushrooms but I think the guy there has retired from growing now and just resells eu imports so it’s probably the same mushrooms he uses to make the tinctures as the company you posted. It’d probably be cheaper to buy dried and make your own tincture.

      Thank you for your prompt reply. Have others experienced LUQ and L sided back pain when on gluten? Could gluten be irritating the pancreas to cause the slight rise in lipase?
