Exposure to Gluten

My son was just recently accidentally exposed to gluten and has been spending most of his time in the bathroom. Any suggestions that have helped relieve the stomach pains and help relieve his diarrhea, or will this just take time. Thanks so much.

Peppermint tea, Pepto Bismol if he is old enough for it, slippery elm is supposed to help though I haven't tried it myself.   If you search for the forum for the word "glutened" you may find more ideas.

Milk of magnesia may help too.

Lots and lots of fluids to flush out the Gluten. Include a Gatorade or something similar. My Celiac daughter takes 1/2 of an Imodium AD multi symptom when she feels the grumbling coming on. A whole pill will wreck havoc on her stomach. Usually a half is enough to stop the diarrhea. 

Then keep hydrating for the next few days and it could a week or longer so for him to feel better.

I use potassium to firm up my stools, sort of naturally dries out the stool, but I can not take the other things people take. A easy to digest diet for awhile like nut meal porridge (no carbs to bloat, and a coconut base so high in potassium). For gas I found a form of star anise worked, I make a bit of a tea with it. I keep a bottle of glidenX around also, it breaks down some of the gluten in the stomach before it reaches the guts, so if you take it right after accidental consumption of some it can reduce the symptoms.

As mentioned slipper elm and marshmallow powders can help, they form a bit of a slime that coats and soothes the irritated areas of the gut. I use it mostly for my UC but I can see it helping after a gluten exposure.

      Depending on which source you research sprouting or fermentation can reduce lectins. I sprout rice, buckwheat and quinoa. However, I admit that gas and intestinal inflammation still plague me after 5 1/2 mo gluten-free. I have been resisting but I may try the aip diet at some point.

      thank you knitty kitty. I will give those articles a read. Yes he is deficient in Iron and Vit D, that is all they tested for. Do you have any tips for finding a pediatric nutritionalist? He has an NHS dietician who has been helpful sending me generalised info on increasing Iron and cutting out dairy but they won't see him now for another year and I feel like I need more support than that...

      Yes,  Lisinopril gave me an inguinal hernia from the persistant cough. Amlodipine doubled urine output and dry eyes so I could not wear contacts, another had me walking bent over like a ninety year old and one knocked out control of my quadracepts so knees would give out.  None lowered my blood pressure. Average BP  132/67 for Oct 21 - 26.  Lowest was 100/59. High 157/62.

      Yes, thank you and I am seeing a neurologist , getting a script for a steroid followed by some  PT when inflammation goes down. Good luck to  you pasquale
