Suspecting gluten intolerance

Hello.

I was trying elimination diet due to pimples I get on my chest and back but not face. I visited numerous dermatologists and whatever I tried nothing worked. They told me it is foliculitis and that there is nothing to do really. I get something like numerous red/light red bumps close together and some take even a month to clear. I tried quitting sugar and coffee and had some effect. However I noticed that after eating pasta/pizza after some days it gets worse. So I am trying to figure whether I have some kind of gluten intolerance.

Some of my symptoms I have.

  • I remember that I used feel tired after eating cornflakes and miserable without reason
  • Generally feeling fatigue and sometimes severe
  • Severe brain fog
  • Some days depression and thinking about how to suicide
  • Before cleaning diet used to burp too much and have gas
  • Abdominal pain especially after drinking coffee
  • Smelly stools sometimes especially after drinking coffee
  • Not normal stools but sometimes soft or breaking

I visited a doctor about my fatigue and these but he was angry that day and just made fun of me. He said 'you were born tired'. I think that probably I should find a better doctor.

Am I susceptible to being gluten intolerant?

You could be susceptible to a gluten intolerance.  The only way to find out is to get tested.  

Learn more about testing for celiac disease.  You must be consuming gluten 8 to 12 weeks prior to the blood tests or the results will be negative.

Find another doctor.  Your current doctor does not seem too compassionate.

Might be bit of a combo problem, many with celiac develop issues with dairy.
SO in addition to celiac tested as mentioned above remove dairy for a few weeks, replace your milk with almond, cashew, or coconut milk.
I used to get the pimple outbreaks from dairy years ago....all through child hood I would get them til I developed lactose intolerance and a whey allergy later then removed them to find that my skin issues cleared up with it.

Thanks for the replies. Actually this is how my pimples look Open Original Shared Link now . These are without pus but some evolve with pus. dermatologists tell me it is folliculitis without any details. I don't shave since I have sensitive skin but I do trim sometimes like now to see changes with diet. I noticed that with changing diet I no longer get big pimples with pus. I started somewhat glutten free this week but  quit sugar/processed foods a month ago.

It guess I may have issue with milk because drinking coffee with milk I get abdominal pain most of the times and kind of diarrhea. About greek yogurt I am not sure whether it is a trigger.

My skin seems a bit better I am doing gluten free diet not checking for cross contamination though.

I haven't closed a week yet. But my stomach seems lot better no pain and black coffee doesn't cause me pain and diarrhea. Probably it makes gluten thing worse. But I could be lactose intolerant too because when having coffee with milk I have hard time. Greek yogurt and cheese doesn't seem to have big effect but I am not sure yet. Also noticed better mood and decreased fatigue.

Yeah with celiac lactose intolerance is common. The enzymes to break down the lactose are introduced to your system by your villi, and celiac destroys these so you get lactose intolerance. Some cheeses, and Greek yogurt are lower lactose so you get less issues. Removing all dairy for a few months til they grow back will make you feel better.

I had the same issue with milk in my coffee. I only recognized the pattern after being gluten free for several months. I would start the day with lots of milk in my coffee and by the end of the day I was drinking it black. So I went lactose free milk, and that was better for a while. I tried the other milk, Holstein vs Jersey, milk protein A vs. milk protein B. Same as before.  Then I switched to Dairy free coffee creamer, which by the way states in the ingredients list that one of the ingredients is made from diary, and my ratio of coffee to creamer stayed consistent throughout the day. Then I started eating home made dill pickles (salt, water, dill, garlic, Kirby culcumbers) because the vinegar pickles seem to bother me. After a short time I discovered that I can now eat and drink as much milk and milk products as I like with no after effects. I believe it is the lactobacillus from the pickles. Remember those jokes about pregnant women wanting pickles and ice cream? Maybe pickles are the original prebiotics.

Depression: once I increased my vitamin D to 10,000 iu. per day my sadness, grumpiness and longtime, sometimes morbid, recurring depression has departed. Several friends and family members have had the same results. One friend found his cholesterol levels improved dramatically after he started on vitamin D. He expects to come off the statins after his next blood lipids test in a few weeks.

In general, if you have celiac or any other weird gut issue, you are likely to have vitamin and mineral deficiencies across the board. The RDA put out by the NIH is the MINIMUM of each required for good health. You really want to be somewhere in the middle between the RDA(recommended daily amount) and the UL(upper limit). As I raise my intake to where I get enough of each, I find another improvement in my health.

I had some blood exams (year ago)they were ok, I have hypothyroidism though slight. Also when tested had low vitamin D about 19. Sounds good that lactose intolerance isnt permament. My biggest issue is pimples I get mainly on chest and back. They are somewhat better but others say that they clear within a day or two. At morning they are better than night. I am not sure whether it is gluten related but it isn't acne.

      I must admit I've been on both sides.  Before my diagnosis, and in my ignorance, I thought all the special diets we see around us today were unnecessary and people were making a big fuss over nothing.  There is a shop in the small town where I live that sells organic and gluten free food and I used to see people walking in and buying things and thought they were being a bit ridiculous spending extra money on what I thought was a fad.  Yet since my diagnosis that shop has been a real lifesaver.  I guess It is hard for people to see the necessity of all this extra effort if they haven't experienced celiac disease personally, or observed the way gluten affects someone they love.  Honestly, I have wondered at times if I would have been as understanding had my husband been diagnosed with coeliac disease instead of me. He has been great.   It must be incredibly difficult if your close friends and family aren't supporting you.  I have read some awful stories from coeliacs where friends and families have not just been unsupportive, but go out of their way to continue serving up gluten.   In such extreme cases, where harm is actually being done, serious thought needs to be taken about removing oneself from harm's way.  That all said, I find that the world is now so full of people struggling with autoimmune illnesses now, allergies and intolerances, that people are definitely becoming more attuned to things.    Word is getting out there. In 2022 a long-running popular TV series in the UK, Doc Martin, ended with a final case: a patient being diagnosed with coeliac disease.  I don't know if anyone saw it but I was so heartened by that episode, that celiac disease was given centre stage for the last ever programme. The patient in question had been suffering from a horrible rash which turned out to be dermatitis herpetiformis. He also had anemia, felt faint and was plain exhausted.  It would have been good education to anyone watching who didn't know about the disease and they would have been left in no doubt about its seriousness and the need to follow a strict gluten-free diet.  I thought to myself as it ended, well, now, that's another piece in our campaign to make coeliac disease better understood!

      I understand your frustration about socializing while having celiac disease. I also have allergies to nuts, dairy, all forms of gluten including oats, strawberries and MSG. I get anxiety while grocery shopping and really take my time to read all labels. I always carry a magnifying glass with me wherever I go to read labels. Many products are labelled Gluten Free but contain Oats, and apparently this is becoming more common. I almost bought some gluten free flour but read that it contained oats. A certain percentage of Celiacs have this complication. I can’t help feeling offended and excluded when others act like I am being “high maintenance”. I am becoming better at being an advocate for myself.  I have had diverticulitis 3 times and each time hospitalized-once, the attending nurse didn’t know what celiac means-she had to research...  If others around me make comments I try to enlighten them, those who don’t get it are not my friends anymore. Be very careful about cross-contamination. I was sick recently for 10 days after a meal was contaminated while I was on holiday. If servers say they have gluten free buns or bread, ask if they use a toaster specifically reserved for gluten-free, or don’t chance it. On a positive note, I didn’t find out I had Celiac Disease until I was 60. Eating a gluten free diet means no more terrible headaches, hives, rashes, intestinal bloating and irregularity, Gastro Intestinal Reflux….when I follow a strict diet and mostly always eat at home, I feel great! I also weeded out “friends” who weren’t worth being around.
