Athletes Foot and Celiacs

Hey all, we have had a very warm humid and wet summer here in Virginia. I have noticed I have been having break outs of athletes foot and jock itch over the course of the summer. I know its pretty contagious in gyms as I do work out and during long spells of wet humid weather, but I wondered if celiacs folks are more vulnerable to longer and more intense periods of both issues. Also are their any sure fire remedies for eliminating these issues.

I do not have any specific ideas, but I battle with this occasionally as a result of working out in an indoor community pool. Change out of your workout clothes immediately after a work out.  Be sure they are dry before dumping them into a laundry basket or wash immediately.  Wear flip flops in the locker room.  Wear them at home to prevent exposures to family members.   Dry throughly.  I leave my gear (swim, bike, run) in the sun occasionally, but Southern California is typically dry except in August.  Things can dry in an hour!   Use fungus cream.  I keep a tube next to my bed.  Try tree tea oil.  Change out your towels after every shower until you have eliminated the problem.  These big old fluffy towels now are hard to dry in the dryer and air drying takes so much longer.  Do not use fabric softener on towels.  Other countries tend to swap out with thin “body-sized tea towels” during humid summers.  Wonder why we do not do that?  It would save energy for sure.  Change out your shoes daily, if possible.  Cut down on sugar in your diet.

I hope this helps!

When I was younger I got athletes foot sometimes.  I used hydrogen peroxide to disinfect the skin. If I had to wear shoes I would soak my sock around the toes in hydrogen peroxide and it helped cut down on the itch.

Natureguy,

When I work in the hay field (like I have done recently) sometime the excess sweat after 3 or 4 days causes the same problem you are describing.

This only happens  when I have an extended of period of sweating.

Both the jock itch and athletes' foots have a common cause.

DO NOT do this if you have DH, Hives or other skin issues related to your celiac disease but people forget the great antiseptic quality of Iodine.

I take a cottton ball pour Iodine on the cotton and swab the "itching" area and it almost' always get rid of the itching in a week or two (usually less than a week) twice a day keeps it in check until the next sweating episodes when I can't avoid sweating for days at a time.

Other wise the itch stays away naturally with good hygiene practices like clean dry socks everyday etc.

And why it is not always convenient in nature a twice daily shower works well too if needed as long as you keeep the area dry  . ... it will naturally bee keep in check usually.

But when that is not possible Iodine kills 90 percent of bacteria on contact.

I know it is working when it burns temporarily.  I like it because it works well in the folds of your body.

Again DO NOT use Iodine if you have DH issues. otherwise Iodine works wonders.

I prefer it ((Iodine) 90% of the time to creams.

I hope this is helpful but it is not medical advice.

As always “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included.

Thanks a lot! I will search that too. I also talked to another doctor and she assured me there is no gluten in this type of antibiotics. Anyway i started the administration of Augmentin on my girl this evening. I hope there will be no problems.

Good afternoon, I don’t know if anyone here has ever tried Braswell’s products like their marmalades or jellies? Are they gluten-free? On the ingredients says “cane sugar, cherries (cherries, cane sugar), strawberries, corn syrup, pectin and citric acid. That ingredient list is from their berry preserve bottle. Most of them say the same for ingredients, but I’m not sure if it is okay to consume.

I have seen this problem many times. I always get in touch with the company. Most times they tell me if I'm just gluten free it is ok, but do not eat it if you are celiac. Calling the company is the best way when you are not sure. Yesterday I had a different example of products being marked gluten-free.  I love chocolate and have a piece each day. The chocolate bar I like is Chocolove. When I bought one this week it was not marked gluten-free. I called the company to find out why and if it was still gluten-free.  Turns out the manufacturer decided there was too much on the wrapper and took off the gluten-free label. It is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
