Chronic Dry Cough

I have read that some people experience a chronic dry cough with celiac disease. I have coughed for over two years.  I have had a normal chest x-ray and a normal scope from my ENT.  My mother and sister have celiac disease but had more of the gastrointestinal symptoms.

If you had a chronic dry cough from celiac, did you cough every day?  How long after the elimination of gluten from your diet did your cough stop?

Thank you.

Have you been tested for celiac disease (complete blood panel : TTG, EMA, DGP and intestinal biopsies)?  Note that not all celiacs test positive to the common screening TTG test.

I am not a doctor, but that chronic cough sounds like asthma.  My family members are always chronically coughing and try to clear their throats in order to breath (not actually having an asthma attack).    A friend of mine  became very ill with asthma.   She discovered has a severe mold problem from a pipe leaking in the wall in her 10 year old house.    It cost her $20,000 to repair the damage and her asthma went away.  Has asthma been ruled out?

If you suspect a gluten sensitivity after celiac disease has been firmly ruled out, I would try the gluten-free diet.  It certainly can not harm you (provided you eat a healthy diet).

I hope this helps!

MarieRH,

Don't forget to check your medicines.  Some BP medicine can cause chronic cough.

I had chronic cough before I transitioned of my Linisopril.

Heartburn medicine can cause it too.

I have a friend at work who is always clearing his throat but I can't convenience him to get off them.

Here is an article about it entitled "Management of GERD-Related Chronic Cough"

Open Original Shared Link

quoting

"G&H Is there an association between chronic cough and nonacidic reflux or weakly acidic reflux?

RM Although there has been some research on this issue, there is no clear consensus on whether the refluxate has to be acidic or whether it can be weakly acidic/nonacidic (pH >4). Many doctors who believe that reflux can lead to chronic cough also believe that it is possible for the reflux to have a pH above 4. Pepsin can be found in the bronchial tree of people with laryngopharyngeal reflux, and it might cause injury even at a pH above 4."

so even slighty/weakly (Non-acid) pH of 4 or more could be causing it . .not the strong acid so often associated with heartburn.

so taking PPIs' often trigger chronic cough where it did not exist before.

I don't know if you are taking GERD meds now or not but it is something to keep an eye on and more reason to get off them if you are.

But ACE inhibitors are well known also like the Linsinopril I mentioned that I had to change my meds from to avoid the chronic cough.

Apparently I don't tolerate medicines well.

I also had to change off Losartan because It was causing Villi blunting.

See this thread

https://www.celiac.com/forums/topic/119462-what-else-can-cause-villi-blunting-has-any-body-had-expereince-with-losartan-and-villi-blunting/

Good luck on your continued journey.

I hope this is helpful but this is not medical advice.

2 Tim 2:7 “Consider what I say; and the Lord give thee understanding in all things” this included.

Hi,

Thank you for your response.  I did have one blood test that showed negative, that was several years ago.  I will be having another soon.

I haven't considered asthma as I don't seem to have any trouble with activity, no shortness of breath, etc.  I don't know much about asthma, do people with it cough daily?  I just cough at random times throughout the day, just a dry, annoying cough, but never overnight, never when I exercise, etc.   Did your friend with the mold just have a cough or were there other symptoms?  Thanks for your help.

This was my main symptom. I still get it from time to time. Also feels like a burning pain on the upper abdomen. I think the wine could definitely cause the pain to be worse. There are do many things I still can't eat.

Yes and this is true of gluten free ready made, processed and prepackaged foods in general. In particular, hard to digest polysaccharides are commonly used in these products that give many celiacs issues and I personally don't handle some emulsifiers well. IMO, reactions to these ingredients are often mistaken for a gluten reaction.

Intolerance to certified gluten-free pasta may be due to additives or stabilizers included in the pasta's ingredients, even among the top brands. It's important to check thoroughly before purchasing and consuming; you can find the actual ingredients listed in the detailed component descriptions on Amazon.

Thank you for this information and your post. I have tried just about every diet there is. I have been experimenting with diet for years and years. I am a vegan, so the diet you mentioned is not an option. Fasting always works for me. Probably because I am detoxing and not feeding candida or parasites. Meat eaters have a higher prevalence of parasites, just so you know. I have a feeling that every time I break out on probiotics it's due to some kind of war with my gut biome. I definitely need to find a system of flushing out my gut so that the probiotics don't have to fight as hard to populate.

I'm unsure if sommersby cider is likely to have cross contamination issues, given its made by a beer company. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I'm assuming wine generally is ok, as it's bottled in a vineyard, but what about other (ostensiblygluten free) liquors?
