Horizon Organic Low Fat Eggnog Safe?

This has probably been asked before, but I can't find answers dated past 2009.  Is Horizon Organic Low Fat Egg Nog gluten free?  Although it's not certified, the manufacturer states on its website that the product is gluten-free and the ingredients seem to be fine (I was dx 6 years ago and know my ingredients inside and out by now)...except maybe the "natural flavors", which always raise a red flag.  I Nima tested it twice and came up with a "Gluten Found" result both times; now I'm afraid to drink it.  Nima support says the device is designed to detect gluten above 20 ppm, but it can sometimes detect levels below that and it's up to me to determine whether or not to use the product.  Unfortunately, the results only indicate whether or not gluten is present and not the amounts.  Your thoughts?

Drink it.  I use Horizon’s heavy whipping cream and Half and Half every single day.   I would trust it.   I have tried all the Commercial egg nogs.   I prefer Strauss Organic egg nog  because it is simply milk, cream, egg, sugar, and nutmeg.   Heavenly!  Worth the $7.00 a quart.  But this is a California product, so it might not be distributed nationwide.  They make some great ice cream and even have Cookies and Cream.  They use Pamela’s gluten-free cookies, if I recall.  

Nima?  There are some severe limitations.  The Gluten Free Watchdog is not recommending it for this very reason.  

FYI. My last endoscopy revealed healed villi and that was after drinking copious amounts of egg nog last Christmas.  ?

Check the sensor pod, if I recall correctly 3 strips is gluten, the bottom stripe is the gluten one the top two turn red no matter what I think are controls. Sometimes a false positive can be triggered on a Nima by the whole strip turning reddish when developing. That bottom stripe is the real teller and how deep or just hardly present is reactions to how much gluten.

I used to love some non dairy egg nogs(lactose intolerant over 10 years and a whey allergy)....now days I can not have sugar and turned to extracts.....Going to be honest the Egg Nog Extract from LorrAnn Oils is a god send use the stuff added to a coconut or almond milk, mix it in cookies, pies, puddings and sweeten with stuff I Can use like Swerve, Pyure, Monk Fruit, and Stevia. I keep the stuff in a dropper order by 4oz refills.

I know it's an old thread, but for anyone who's interested I just got sick drinking Horizon's Lowfat Egg Nog. I tend to be on the more sensitive side, and this one feels like a mild reaction after one glass. Hope this helps.

Do you normally drink glasses of milk without issue?  It maybe just a touch of lactose intolerance.  This is common in unhealed celiacs.  Even if healed, your chances of being lactose intolerant are as high as 65% — even higher in some groups.  That is a lot of people!

Yep, I'm definitely lactose intolerant so I took a lactase supplement that I know is gluten-free. My lactose symptoms include the classic gas/bloating/diarrhea, but my gluten symptoms are extreme hunger/constipation. I got the latter from this eggnog! (Also, I've been on the gluten-free diet for a few years now with slip ups here and there, so I'm mostly healed.)

Hummm....I just downed 2 quarts of Strauss Organic Eggnog over the last three days.  It is not marked gluten free on the carton.    It is the best eggnog.  No fillers.  It was released earlier this month and I tried to resisit buying it.  I adore it!  It is something I really look forward to!  And I do not share it.  I know I previously shared this but I wish more eggnogs were gum and thickener free.  


However, I use Horizon Half and Half 1/2 gallon for coffee and plow though Horizon’s Organic whipping cream (about 1/2 gallon every 10 days) without a celiac disease reaction (there  is gum in the cream ☹️.   I do not buy Horizon Egg Nog because it is way more processed.  Who wants low fat eggnog?  This is the season to indulge!  It is why they add starch, gum and natural flavors.   You could just buy some cheap store brand nog and save cash!  

You are correct, Horizon’s site does say that they are confident that their products are gluten free.  No guarantees but that is probably prompted by their attorneys.  

Maybe just make your own egg nog from scratch.  It is not hard.  

This is off topic, but five years after my diagnosis, I had a gluten exposure and became very ill.  I ended up developing hives and GERD.  It lasted almost a year.   My GI pushed for a repeat endoscopy.  Turns out I am healed from celiac disease, but was diagnosed with autoimmune gastritis which is common I guess when you have Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis.  Not every symptom is due to celiac disease.

Just gonna throw out a note padded recipe I have had since last year for a sugar free and dairy free eggnog. Between the lactose, and the sugar in real eggnog I imagine quite a few end up with bloating, gas, and other issues.

4 large eggs
2 large egg yolk
1/2 cup (100g) granular Swerve Sweetener, Pyure, or Truvia Naturals
1/4 tsp salt
4 cups unsweetened almond milk
2 tsp vanilla
1/2 tsp ground nutmeg

1. Whisk eggs, yolks, sweetener, and salt together in a large saucepan.
2.Slowly whisk in almond milk until well combined. Using a candy thermometer, cook mixture over low heat while stirring constantly, until it becomes thick enough to coat the back of a spoon and registers 165F (this can take up to 15 minutes).
3. Stir in 2 tsp vanilla and nutmeg. Cover tightly with plastic wrap and chill for at least three hours and up to 2 days.

I have definitely noticed there are times I feel my gluten symptoms flare up and I feel like I'm missing something... I'm pretty strict with my diet and sometimes when trying a new product marked as gluten-free I'll still react. Funny you mention Hashimoto's; my dad just got diagnosed with that last year and my aunt (his sister) also has Hashimotos and Celiac. Maybe I'm a mix too! O.O

      @trents I absolutely understand the perspective of getting off completely from wheat,  but sometimes situation may occur that you won't have choice to eat other than wheat,  my son travels a lot, since they travel in team, it's not easy to go out and find him a gluten free every single time! I have seen, even in NJ I m struggling to find out gluten free stuff, in this country we don't get fresh food in stores, other day i saw gluten free bread so hard that will never feel to eat it! Once in while means once in a while, when there is no absolute option. Here all goes by book, there is no enough scientific research done yet on eating gluten with celiac,  everyone has there own narrative,  only it being said don't eat wheat, but Noone has come up with the experience. And moreover my sons diagnosis is yet to define, whether he has celiac or NCGS. last time his endoscopy came negative hence doctor did not bother to tell us. I hope this time it will be the same case. We are figuring out why his billirubin is high, may be that could be the reason his igg iga test is high, will get check on all and come to the conclusion. My son and us is absolutely fine not eating gluten, but one can't guarantee that every time they will get the gluten free food other than home. I also don't trust under the table of "gluten free products" have see people still have same iga igg count even after following the diet. This is all learnings, will keep him under observation and go through the regular testing to find out how his body reacts to what.  I may sound like a fool, but medical is scam in US, hence i would consult doctors in India. 14 years ago they have announced i had a breast cancer, which was not, since then I don't trust medical system here.

      I've been to Italy recently for a wedding and it was excellent. I made my own gluten-free sandwiches/pannini to take on the flights.  Spain is good and you can get good gluten-free breads in the supermarkets there. The UK and Ireland are very good also. Australia would be good since Coeliac Disease is fairly common there ...1 in 70 as opposed to 1 in 100 in other countries. You have to advocate for yourself in restaurants when eating out. I've read about several Coeliacs being cross contaminated from preordered gluten-free meals on airlines. Personally, I wouldn't trust a gluten-free meal on an airline especially long haul. Try the hashtag celiactravel on tiktok and instagram. Loads of Coeliacs posting about their experiences with plenty travel tips. The Atly app has a list of gluten-free friendly restaurants worldwide.
