How long for DH to appear after a glutening

Hi there ? 

every time I’ve been accidentally  glutened (always through cross contamination I never eat anything with gluten in it) I get DH on my elbows and sides and feet and fingers. Always very mildly now, but it’s always the key to knowing when I’ve accidentally  ingested some gluten. I was just wondering how long after gluten it usually taks your DH to appear?? I find it hard to work out what meal it was that I had cross contamination (so I can try and work out how it happened and what to avoid next time.) I have a feeling if maybe only an hour after ingesting gluten for me but is that too early? Could it be the meal the night before?

I can only speak from my own experience but when first diagnosed I would break out in new lesions within an hour or two. I would also get a feeling like I was falling even if I wasn't. Let me know I was in for a real rough time for a while. However as time went on, and I suspect the antibodies left my skin, the time between a glutening and a breakout became longer and the lesions less severe. I have now been gluten free since the early 2000's and just get a tiny blister or two.

DH can make us even more sensitive to tiny amounts of CC than folks without DH. The more whole unprocessed foods you can eat the better. Watch out for gluten in topicals while you have active lesions and if at all possible don't eat out until you are very well healed.

Hi 

I am only diagnosed with atopic dermatitis. 

But my atopic dermatitis begins to break out within an hour after digesting gluten, only with itching. After another hour or two, it becomes visible to others, coz it's like I've dipped my finger in acid. Elbow as well, leaving skinless open wounds. Then it goes through different stages, with zits, skin falling off, papercuts, broken blood vessels due to all dried out etc. Quite fascinating, but painful.

If only eating derivatives it takes a couple of days with a tiny amount a couple of times. And it only affects the places where I usually have open wounds.

Some rashes caused by gluten can show signs within a couple of hours in some people, so DH should too.

I am interesting as I out of desperation went gluten-free 4 years before my diagnosis ( long story) . I had skin manifestations, with many other symptoms ataxia, gi bloat pain etc. I had not joined the forums so I did not realize how strict I would need to be. I now know.

Before diagnosis my symptoms of gi bloat occurred within 45 minutes of eating cc food. Skin issues occured a few hours later.

Now diagnosed and being super strict learning on the forum just how strict I have to be ( my most recent cc) gave me bloat within 2 hours and skin lesions within 8-9 hours. Luckily it was confined to 2 areas. My gi stays off damaged for weeks even if DH patch settles my deficiencies and microflora are off weeks.

  ( I was gluten challenged in 2016. )

As Ravenswoodglass says stay whole foods. I don't eat out. My last cc was from a gluten-free labeled product ( one piece)  it was labeled gluten free but not  labeled certified gluten free.

I make most foods from scratch and do whole foods. That food had a decent reputation so I thought I could try it. My immune system said NO! ?

Hi Awol

Would you mind telling a bit more about this? 

I too have issues of long time recovery I recently Learned, I was Hoping it was due to not being gluten-free long enough. 11 days, and still have wee bit of rashes and weariness, and stomach is on part time duty. But this did not happen from derivatives. :(

      Are you using the same mixer that you used for your gluten containing baking? That could be your culprit.

      I would ask for a total IGA test (aka, Immunoglobulin A (IgA) and other names as well) to check for IGA deficiency. That test should always be ordered along with the TTG IGA. If someone is IGA deficient, their individual celiac IGA test scores will be artificially low which can result in false negatives. Make sure you are eating generous amounts of gluten leading up to any testing or diagnostic procedure for celiac disease to ensure validity of the results. 10g of gluten daily for a period of at least 2 weeks is what current guidelines are recommending. That's the amount of gluten found in about 4-6 slices of wheat bread.

      There was not a total IGA test done, those were the only two ordered. I would say I was consuming a normal amount of gluten, I am not a huge bread or baked goods eater

      Were you consuming generous amounts of gluten in the weeks leading up to the blood draw for the antibody testing? And was there a Total IGA test done to test for IGA deficiency?

      Thank you for the reply. It was the TTG IGA that was within normal limits
