I was wondering if any one else noticed that if they eat gluten does things hurt worse like I just found out I have arthritis in my thumbs and I have carpal tunnel and tendonitis in both my arms and hand I keep getting this feeling like the inside of my hand is tearing like the tendons in my palm are ripping so I guess does any one else feel like things get worse or new weird pains in their hands or wrist?

My main gluten symptom is migraine, but that doesn't start until about an hour after eating. My first symptom is often inflammation. I have osteoarthritis in my right knee and very serious nasal sinus allergies. At 15-20 minutes after eating even a small amount of gluten (not on purpose, when the restaurant is not careful enough) my sinus cavity starts to feel like it's filling and expanding and my knee begins to be more sensitive to walk on. At that point I know to take a migraine pill.

Yes, if your issues are with your hands and wrists, I can see gluten causing more pain in them.

I was glutened by extreme carelessness at a restaurant last night and my knee is bothering me. My knee is my inflammation barometer. So your hands hurting makes sense to me.

Thank you the stupid Drs won't listen to me it's driving me crazy like they think I'm imagining it they won't even listen about where it hurts it's like they don't hear me talk and it's not just one Dr it's more like 5 different ones I've seen since December when my hands started hurting bad  one gave me cortisone shots in my wrist for carpal tunnel and arthritis and wow that made it way worse for 6 days the pain was intensified I'm sure it's from getting accidentally glutened like you both said hopefully now I can't stop having accidentally getting gluten one thing I thought was ok and is not is rice I had minute rice it's grown in Texas ate three times over the last three months just found out it's not ok only rice from Thailand is safe because they don't grow anything with gluten in it thank you all for your help if it wasn't for this site I would not be able to do this life so again I just want to say how much I appreciate your reply?

Sounds like you got your answer. I can get knuckle pain, toe pain numbing, my fingers and knuckles and feet also swell with inflammation with cc. So as other said yep- we get many symptoms including hands/knucles/ fingers. My Dr saw once during testing for me the impression my shoe left on my swelling foot. So did my mom. She is a retired nurse. I believe mom was a bit surprised how fast I swelled and that I felt/knew it.

I hope you feel better soon and glad to hear you are sticking with Thai rice. I find quinoa or cauliflower can often be a good fit alternative to rice if you want to switch it up on occasion.

Best wishes.

The forms that vitamin and mineral supplements come in can be important. Bioavailability (i.e., how well they are absorbed) is often sacrificed for the sake of cost and shelf life. The vitamin or mineral you are targeting is always chemically combined with other elements to make them into a dispensable form (such as a powder, liquid or a pill) and to give them some chemical stability for shelf life.

Thank you so much! I will look for that.

@llisa, back then when you tried magnesium and it upset your tummy, I'm guessing you were using the most common form of magnesium found on store shelves, namely, magnesium oxide. It has a reputation for having a laxative effect. It is not very well absorbed and so draws a lot of water into the colon, just like the laxative known as milk of magnesia. I'm guessing if you would switch to the "glycinate" form of magnesium you would not have this problem. Magnesium glycinate is absorbed much better. If you can't find magnesium glycinate at your local stores, you can order gluten free brands of it off of Amazon.

I've tried magnesium before. Twice in 2 years. It really upset my stomach. And that was before this celiac disease diagnosis. (Finally, after 2 years of trying to find out what was wrong with me.) I have no idea how sensitive I am. When my stomach was upset, I'd go to my comfort foods: cream of wheat, cheese and crackers, scrambled eggs and toast...so, making myself worse by trying to feel better.  Just got results of biopsy yesterday, so today is first day of trying no gluten and reading that it can be hiding in vitamins and meds. So, I welcome ALL advice and personal experiences. No advice is too basic. I know nothing. Thank you!

Have you considered also supplementing with magnesium and zinc? We usually recommend these two as well. D3, Calcium and Magnesium all important for bone and nerve health.
