Strange diagonal creases on forearm

I was diagnosed with celiac disease 4 months ago.  I noticed these strange lines on my arm, I saw a dermatologist who said it could be lichens sclerosis.  I was wondering if anybody has these lines as and if you know what they are?  The skin is almost like crepe paper and a bit shiny.

I think it's related to a deficiency of Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's).  Celiacs often have trouble absorbing essential nutrients, especially fat based nutrients like EFA's, vitamins A, D, E and K.

You might try adding healthy fats to your diet like cod liver oil, flaxseed oil, olive oil, or hemp oil (not CBD oil although that has benefits, too).

Hope this helps.

Hey, I have the same thing too! Did you find out what it is? I just had a baby who is 6 month and wondered if it’s from carrying her.

Hi there,

I recently noticed the exact same thing. I have shiny slightly smooth or dry ish skin on my underarm of my forearm. There are horizontal wrinkles going across it. I had a baby just over a year ago. Has anyone got a diagnosis for this? What is it?

Stretch marks?   Your arms can plump up when you are pregnant and nursing.  Stretch marks just do not just appear on your belly.  They can occur after weight loss.

Hi,

I’m glad so many people responded. I have diagonal lines on my arm too. And I recently had a baby. I noticed them when he was about 6-7 months old. I haven’t found out what has caused it yet?

I have a small area of my right forearm with the same diagonal stripes.  I have no idea what has caused them but have been avoiding most oil for a while. I don't react badly to gluten  products and have an underactive thyroid.  If anyone can explain what causes these red lines it might save me a doctor's appointment.

We couldn't diagnose it, but the original poster mentioned that their dermatologist thought it was "lichens sclerosis." Does yours look like their picture?

Hi, did you get  a finalised diagnosis for this? I have it and it comes and goes. It's so odd and it'd be nice to get some answers.

Oh interesting, I have an intolerance to gluten and an subclinical interactive thyroid. I wonder if it's related? My left arm is affected and it started off small and then got bigger

I have grateful to find people with similar stories. I also noticed my lines 1 year after birth and have no idea what causes them. I don't believe I have an insensitivity to gluten although I do have eczema. I'm posting because I hope to receive a reply when someone figures out what the cause is.

I also have hypothyroid.

I also have been noticing on my left arm these diagonal lines I have a 12 month old and a 2 year old and I just recently noticed them on my arm about 3 weeks ago they come and go seems like the more I hold my 12 month old the more they pop up I do not have any gluten or thyroid issues I do however have carpal tunnel my left hand wrist is the worst with it im 36years old I have a 12 year old and I've never had this before also stretch marks don't come and go and I didn't gain but 25 pounds with both my daughters and was right back to my pre pregnancy weight 119lbs 3 weeks after having both of them so i know it's not stretch marks some days it's alot of lines and other days there are none but seems like it's more when I hold my baby alot cause I always hold her in my left arm my right arm doesn't have these not once have they popped up on my right so I'm curious as well to what they could be I'm going to ask my doctor Wednesday maybe it's a sign of iron deficiencies I've really not had much of an appetite since having her and I barely have a second to eat so I will repost Wednesday with an update on what my doctor thinks it is

Scott Adams Grand Master

Welcome to the forum! I do wonder in your case if the marks come from holding your baby with your left arm, which sounds possible. If you do have an iron deficiency be sure to get screened for celiac disease, as this forum is here to help those on a gluten-free diet due to gluten sensitivity or celiac disease.

I too have it on my left arm, these diagonal lines. I had a child a year ago and they started showing up around two weeks ago. Mine doesn’t come and go it’s always there, I wonder if it has anything to do with deficiencies since I’m still breastfeeding or if it’s my Hashimoto’s. I don’t have gluten allergies either

Mine too it shows up in the evening time and when I wake up it's gone but after carrying her around all day it comes back I forgot to ask my doctor but will next Wednesday too see what he says I'm only iron deficient so I'm not sure what it could be besides holding her I did have back to back pregnancies but didn't have it with my second child just my last one that's a year old now but started seeing it around 10 months I was like that's weird but as the lines got more defined and more of them down my arm I'm like okay what's going on the more I hold her the worse they are but I will update after I ask my doctor next week

It's really crazy I have 3 kids and didn't get these untill my last one was about 10 months I guess I noticed them but not like they are now but mine go away after sleeping at night then about afternoon to evening they are right back I will check with my baby doc this Wednesday last time I forgot to ask him but making a note to ask this time as I did breast feed both my girls for a while but I'm just wondering if it's from holding them did u have back to back pregnancies I'm wondering if that has something to do with it

Update talked to my doctor today and he seems to think it's has to do with our hormones from having the babies he said as long as it goes away it's nothing to worry about he said that or it's just from holding them so much but he's an obgyn and said he's never seen that before but this is what he seems too think it is due too

It's possible he's in the early stages of celiac disease, and it has been caught before villi damage. The blood test results so far do indicate possible celiac disease, as well as his strong family history of celiac disease. If his symptoms get better on a gluten-free diet this would be another strong indication. Personally I think it's definitely better to proceed on the safe side and go gluten-free, rather than to risk severe villi damage and all that comes with it.

For some context: I have type 1 diabetes (T1D) (since 11 years) and celiac disease(since 4 years) For about a year now, I’ve been experiencing permanent floating and undigested stools. I’ve had a pancreas elastase test done. The first result was extremely low at 44, but a second test came back at 236. My doctor said that since one result is normal, it rules out pancreatic insufficiency because, according to them, elastase levels would always stay low if that were the issue. However, could the 236 have been a false result? My doctor also thinks I don’t have pancreatic insufficiency because I’m able to gain weight. I also get hgh injections as my bone age is younger than my real age, this also contributes to weight gain, so I dont know if weight gain can rule out malabsorption. But maybe if I had real malabsorption I wouldnt gain any weight even with hgh? For celiac, I’m on a gluten-free diet, but there might b small cross-contamination from things like pepper labeled as “may contain gluten.” or sausages which dont have gluten ingredient but say may contain. My doctor said that small amounts like this wouldn’t harm me and even mentioned that an occasional small exposure to gluten may not do much damage (which seems questionable since I thought even tiny amounts could be harmful). She also said that when Im older (Im m17) I could try eating small amounts of gluten and do antibody blood tests to see if I can tolerate small amounts or not. For reference, I’m asymptomatic when it comes to celiac, so I have no idea if I’ve been “glutened” or not. My first concerning celiac blood test was semi high IgA, then 3 months later we did a check up and my IgA was high so it was confirmed celiac. Since than I’ve had celiac antibody tests done yearly to see how my diet is going, and they’ve been negative, but I’ve heard those aren’t always reliable. I’ve never had a follow-up endoscopy to confirm healing. I also always kept eating „may contain gluten“ food. (I live in Germany so I dont know if „may contain gluten“ is as risky as in the usa but I suppose both are as risky) These stool issues started around the same time I was doing excessive heavy lifting at the gym. Could stress or lifting have triggered this, or is that less likely since the symptoms persist even after I stopped lifting? Occasionally, I’ll feel very mild stomach discomfort, but it’s rare and not severe. My doctor (also a dietist) said floating, undigested stools could still be “normal,” but that doesn’t seem realistic to me. Could this be impacting my vitamin or protein absorption? I also did a fructose intolerance breath test and had a high baseline of 20 ppm, but it never increased—only decreased over time. I fasted for 12 hours and didn’t eat fructose beforehand, but my stomach didn’t feel completely empty during the test. Could this mean the test was inaccurate? For lactose intolerance, I did the breath test but only fasted 10 hours and had eaten lactose prior because I wasn’t aware of the proper diet restrictions. My results were: 14, 12, 15, 25, 35, 40, 40 ppm—which would be considered positive. But given that I didn’t fast long enough or follow the right diet, could this result be unreliable? Has anyone else dealt with similar symptoms? What ended up being the cause for you? And sorry for the long text!

The Docs' and NP haven't committed to Celiac determination yet but say go gluten-free diet because...  And I have with improved physical results - feeling better; overall functions better, and more energy.  Still 10 pounds down in weight but I still have BMI of ~23.  It's been just over a month now gluten-free diet.  I'm fortunate I get along with diary/milk well and most other foods. I wanted ask about this site's sponsor, gliadin X.  If this is legit, seems like a good product to keep on hand. Though it says it's only a safety for incidental gluten contact - not a substitue for gluten-free diet. What's your input on this? This may be sensitive subject since they're a sponsor. I've used resources here and other sites for information, gluten-free food/product lists. So thank you for all that support. That's it for now - Stay warm...  -2F this morning in Colorado!

I did suffer with gastric symptoms before diagnosis, but got all sorts of weird and wacky symptoms after going gluten free.   Things got much better once my antibodies fell to normal levels, but it took years (please don't panic, many people's go to normal levels relatively quickly when following a gluten-free diet). Causes of the symptoms you mention that I also experienced were iron supplements, a temporary dairy intolerance (this is common in coeliacs and should pass when your gut heals properly), and eating oats, as mentioned above.  Other symptoms I got were musculoskeletal pain after diagnosis, but again, once my coeliac blood tests were normal, I had no more pain. I did notice patterns emerging in foods that I reacted to and learned to steer clear of them, then gradually reintroduced them when my gut healed, such as soya, pure oats and dairy products.    You might like to keep a food diary. Cristiana

Well the conflicting results continue as the biopsy has come back negative. 😵‍💫 Waiting to discuss further but I really don’t know what to think now? Eight biopsy’s were taken from duodenum which surely should be sufficient if it was coeliac?
