Hi everyone, I've been looking around the forums here fir a while and I thought that I'd finally join up, I hope I'm asking the right information here in the right place I'm not one to use forums very often!

I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease roughly 2 Years ago and I've admitedly had a ups and downs, at most I've only been Glutened 2 times that I can think but each time is just a whirlwind of horrible symptoms. I'm actualy suffering from a Glutening now from roughly 2 Weeks back and was hoping someone could give me a bit of advice?

My Symptoms are usually stomach pains, not at all pleasent BMs at least 2-3 times a day, Brain Fog, Confusion, depresion, and a seriously heavy feeling of dread, I feel awful almost like I'm just going to keel over. I have been Glutened before and my symptoms lasted at least a month and a half before I started to get back to normal.

I've tried sticking to wholefoods and cutting dairy but theres still foods my stomach just cant handle or digest, I've been drinking peppermint tea also witch has helped sooth it a little, but during the day I feel nauseaus or exremely hungry and I'm afraid Ill eat something and make it worse!

Im sorry fir the rant on my first post but I just feel like something is looming over me and was hoping people could provide dome support and help me realise it'll pass...I hope

Hi,

It sucks getting glutened.  I hope you feel better soon! :)  Cutting out dairy was a good idea.  You could also try cutting out oats.  And any spicy foods like hot peppers.

Your symptoms of feeling hungry sound familiar to me.  Maybe try some psyillium husks with water to bulk up and reduce hunger.  It might help.  Pepto Bismol can be soothing also but the effect doesn't last real long.  %-up or ginger beer may help the nausea.Limiting most sugar and carby foods is good too.  Plain aspiring can help with pain.  But try to take it take it with some food to protect your stomach..

Drinking lots of water is not a bad idea too.  It just takes time for the immune system to settle down again.  But we can try to alleviate the symptoms in the meantime.

Soups and stews.  Anything mushy and well-cooked (even fruit) makes it easier for me to digest after a Glutening.   Honestly, eating anything can hurt, but eventually it does get better.  

I eat that stew or soup for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Boring, but it does the job.  Keep it simple using just a few ingredients.  Keep it bland.

It really really does! Thank you, If I have dairy too soon it just messes with me even more, I don't think there are any foods I've been eating that have Oats in them so that's good, I've been avoiding spicy foods too.

I've not heard of Psyillium Husks before, I'll give it a try if I can find them, I've heard Ginger is quite good for a bad stomach, I tried Ginger Tea before and it seemed to help too much gave me heartburn though haha

I'm not sure I know what dies and dosen't have a lot of carbs, I've mostly been having things like Brown Rice, Meats, fruit, juice & water.

I've been knocking back the water a lot too, I hope my body gets back together soon, somedays it just gets to be too much and I can't stay away from work forever. Thank you! Ill try some of the things you mentioned!

I do enjoy soup, I know a few good soups I can buy that are easy on the stomach so Ill give those a try! It does make me feel pretty bad when I get like this, I was back to eating real food and everything haha

Ill try that it surely cant hurt, Ive been eating bland stuff, Rice Crackers, Brown Rice, fruit, plain chicken, Ill try keeping things simple!

I would say make your own over buying any premade. You want to cook stuff to mush, and keep it simple avoiding all the additives. I have a few recipes for soups.
Carbs, Starches, sugars can make bloating worse.
Make it simple to digest, think crockpot/roast meats in liquid for 2-8 hours low heat til tender and fall apart, almost as much time for veggies.
I find adding a bit of water/almond milk to my eggs and cooking on low scramble or covered to keep them moist and soft make digestion easier.
Digestive enzymes taken in ratio for your diet (the amount of carbs, proteins, fat you eat dictate how much of which enzymes you need) can help break down food.
Many other issues are results of your intestines damage inhibiting nutrient absorption, taking supplements in liquid form for B-vitamins, Vitamin D, and Magnesium can help. IE Liquid Health B-Vitamin Complex, Bluebonnet vitamin D drops, Doctors Best Magnesium Powder.

In some cases herbs can help like Anise for gas, Ginger and peppermint for the stomach, and Marshmallow Root, Slippery Elm, and Aloe Vera Juice for the intestines.

Ennis has this... but yes, my crockpot comes out when I am glutened.  My instant pot can crank out a tasty chicken soup in a flash while my crockpot is roasting beef.  Boring foods, but safe.  I dread having to eat after a gluten exposure!

Thank you for the advice, in the end I went and made my own soup, not great for my first try but it was better than potentially making myself worse, I enjoyed it, I got some vitamains too to take, I was able to find a liquid Vitamain B Complex, the store I went to was helpfull enough to show me what was Gluten Free.

 

I fealt awful around then, Im feeling like I have more energy now I can actually do things and focus more, Ill keep on like I have been, Im not 100% and still have some BM issues but it's been better than what it has been, Ive not been anywhere near as naseaus either.

 

Thank you for your advice! Ill see if I can find some of the other things you mentioned too thanks again!

Im the same, I never know what to eat, some food does better than others for me, I went on to make my own soup and Im glad I did, I should do it more often and at least then J know what's going in to it, it wasn't the best first try but I enjoyed it haha

Check into a good B-complex and some Magnesium Glycinate and the other digestive aides he has mentioned.

      Welcome to the forum, @Scochran! You have had two antibody tests designed to detect celiac disease: 1. Tissue Transglutaminase Ab, IgA (aka, "tTG-IGA") 2. Endomysial Antibody IgA (aka, "EMA") The tTG-IGA you have had done twice and it seems to have been negative the first time but there is no negative vs. positive note the second time. We can't tell from the numbers themselves because different labs use different scales. So, unless you include the range for negative vs. positive for the second tTG-IGA test we can't be sure if it was negative or positive. And there is a question as to whether the second tTG-IGA test was accurate because you had already started a gluten free diet. The EMA was was also negative. This is an older test and not as sensitive as the tTG-IGA. It isn't ordered very often anymore. It is also relatively expensive. The other test, the IGA, which was high both times, is what we call "total IGA" and is not a test for celiac disease per se. It's value is that if it is low, it can create false negatives in the individual celiac IGA based tests such as the tTG-IGA. Your total IGA is not deficient so that is not a problem in your case. If you are wondering if a high total IGA is a health risk, I am not aware that it is significant in that sense. But yes, you are correct and your nurse practitioner is wrong. Total IGA cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease. It does not appear from the limited testing that has been done that you have celiac disease but it would have been helpful if an more complete celiac panel had been done and done at a time when you were consuming generous amounts of gluten. A more complete celiac panel would have included DGP-IGG antibody test. So, you might consider a "gluten challenge" and then ask for a more complete celiac panel If you are convinced that gluten is causing you problems then you may have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) instead of celiac disease. NCGS shares many of the same symptoms of celiac disease but does not damage the lining of the small bowel as does celiac disease. There is no test for it. It is 10x more common than celiac disease. Some experts feel it can be a precursor to the development of celiac disease. Eliminating gluten from your life is the antidote for both.

She’s a nurse practitioner endocrinologist and told me I didn’t necessarily need to be eating gluten again after I had stopped for two weeks for second test but don’t avoid it. I felt that wasn’t correct from what I’ve read. Also she told me the total iga for this test is specific for celiac only. From what I’ve read that isn’t correct. She is diagnosing me just from elevated iga? Is this correct. My sister is celiac but her ttg iga is high and total iga. I feel so confused. My sister is definitely celiac and I have so many symptoms I believe could be but not the standard ones. I ache all over, off balance and dizzy, many health problems I feel could be related. Please chime in with your experience.

      Google is your friend. I just put in " air frier Whatever" and get recipes that so far have been really. After a while you see what they are doing and you can convert your old recipes to air frier. I love mine!

      I had a triple bypass so do not eat cheese or butter but I use avocado oil freely. Do not eat potato chips etc every night anymore instead fruit and or bowl of cereal with nut milk. Diet is much cleaner now but qty remains the same. My diet seems nutritional enough and pretty much follows: breakfast- hard boiled egg, 1/2 oz beef liver, cereal: flax, milk thistle pumpkin seed and oatmeal mixed together Lunch/dinner-  meat, chicken or salmon with potato or rice or quinoa and veggies no oil sometimes salad with dressing. Bread if needed. supper- 3 slice bread peanut or cashew butter or 5 grain cereal with nut milk, or soup loaded with rice or whatever evening- fruit maybe potato chips or cookies when I just have to do it. Ordinarily try not to keep them in house. I put on a pound or so when potato chips are eaten for couple days. I use to eat much more fat but am more careful now after bypass so suppose that makes a difference. I think small intestine might have something to do with it but was looking for confirmation.
