Has anyone else’s DH looked like this?

I am awaiting test for a skin biopsy to come back and just wanting to know if it’s normal for the skin to tint purple. Kinda freaking me out. I have had this kind of rash for a few years now. But I have recently went gluten free. What I have noticed is that it didn’t blister like before it just came up with the red bumps and then itched and went away but left the purple tint. Also does DH cause muscle pain in the area. I have it on my elbows, fingers, and the top of both thighs. spacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.pngspacer.png

It can leave purple marks. They fade & disappear with time. I'm not sure I would describe it as muscle pain exactly but it certainly causes inflammation in the area & that inflammation does travel along the nerves. I've had areas where I would describe it as a bruised feeling or a sore feeling.

Did you go gluten free before getting the skin biopsy?

Besides the rash I do get other symptoms as well. I can get patches of skin that even if the rash heals I have some discoloration. I can flush in areas too. I do get myalgia when cc, not necessarily in the same place the rash flares. I do get burning, itching, and discoloration at rash site.

My myalgia occurs in particular areas I am prone to get myalgia at. My lower back and upper back between shoulder blades are my corresponded myalgia areas. This was used early on as a way to monitor and determine my additional food intolerances during food diary as well. My myalgia and joints pain were very helpful during food diary recording.

I also get ataxia ,neuropathy, gi symptoms too. The neuropathy can cause pain and aches in muscles associated with those particular nerves it is more immediate, sharp , burning and is more referred radiating to the tissues surrounding the nerve that is triggered. My myalgia muscle aches feels more like a dull constant ache.

good luck and Best wishes on healing.

So just got my biopsy results in and the doctor said it was urticaria. and in the lab report it said that the tissue had rare neutrophils present but no evidence of vasculitis is seen. What does this mean exactly?

All celiac disease testing requires you to be on a full gluten diet, even skin biopsies.  How long had you been gluten free prior to the skin biopsy?

The pathologist should have been looking for antibodies.   Did  the doctor tell the lab to look for antibodies?  Did his clinical notes on the lab order indicate that he was looking for celiac disease?  Did he biopsy correctly for DH which is adjacent to the rash and not on it.

I think you need to talk to your doctor.

Hey Talia4, I still try to stay on the lower end of carb intake but things are way easier for me these days. It really looks like a digestive issue at the core in my case   As supplements with meals I'm now taking 3-4x 650mg betaine hcl without pepsin (to handle larger doses) 1-2x Doctor's Best digestive enzymes   And daily Share Pommelozzini. This has helped my digestion immensely with carbs and fats. I'm way more tolerant of larger meals and things are a lot easier. Happy to hear any progress or findings on your end as well though!

I think most of us, when we first got our diagnosis, imagined that going gluten free would be the magic the bullet that would restore us to perfect health. We soon find out that it usually isn't quite that simple and that celiac disease has long fingers.

Thanks! I still have much to learn, I'd hoped going gluten-free would be a magic bullet and I'm learning my system is still very sensitive which is overwhelming and discouraging at times. Thanks for the yogurt tip! There is comfort in knowing that this is common during early healing and I'm not alone!

Thanks so much for the response. Are you usually able to pinpoint a trigger when you get the pain again? What I didn’t share in my earlier post is that I also usually eat out on weekends (though I share celiacs/needs to be gluten-free) and I’ve also been under a lot of stress lately in my personal life. While I’m speculating that it’s the wine it could certainly be a number of things. Do you ever notice the pain more when you are stressed? Learning so much about the brain/gut connection and celiacs. Thanks, there is comfort in hearing others have experienced similar symptoms.

This was my main symptom. I still get it from time to time. Also feels like a burning pain on the upper abdomen. I think the wine could definitely cause the pain to be worse. There are do many things I still can't eat.
