Black Beans

Hi all,

For starters, I don't have celiac. I have severe allergies to wheat, barley and rye (most likely the gliadin, not gluten). I have been wanting to expand my diet and try some new foods. I read an article which claimed that beans in general, and black beans specifically, have a high level of cross contamination. To the point that it isn't unusual to find whole kernels of barley even in bags labelled gluten free.

Have any of you had any issues with black beans (or any other beans)? I am extremely sensitive so I wanted to find out if that article was accurate or just fear mongering.

Just sort on a cookie sheet and the wash the beans.   We have always done that even before my diagnosis of celiac disease.    Beans can have twigs or rocks.  They are a raw agricultural product.  They are gluten free.

I understand that beans themselves are gluten free. My concern is specifically that if there is a whole piece of barley or wheat in the bag, rinsing would not be sufficient to remove any cross contamination.

I react at less than 20ppm. I have had mild anaphylaxis from eating certified gluten-free oatmeal that was tested negative at that level. The article I read suggested that even certified gluten-free beans have commonly been found to be heavily cross contaminated in some cases. I was trying to determine if that is actually true based on others experiences or if it was just one person stirring up fear.

      Yes, the TTG-IGG was positive but not the TTG-IGA.

      For someone with celiac disease who might have extreme villi damage the term "cross-reactivity" gets thrown around a lot.  Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.

      Connie, spinach is high in oxalates. Many celiacs do not tolerate oxalates well.  If you are still battling dermatitis herpetiformis, you may want to look into a low iodine diet as well as reviewing possible sources of gluten cross contamination.

      Do you eat outside your home, especially in restaurants, as this can be a source of cross-contamination. If you need to take dapsone still your diet may not be 100% gluten-free. This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.):
