Black pepper - an issue?

I get bad DH if I'm exposed to gluten, and I'm also super sensitive to gluten. I've been in good shape for a year and a half after adopting the Fasano Diet. I give you all this by way of background.

I would like to buy some black pepper to add seasoning to my food. Are there any preferred brands, or things to look out for? I'm wary of shared lines and facilities due to my DH.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Congratulations on getting your DH under control!  It was probably hard work (I trialed the Fasano diet for a few months too.)

I use Kirkland brand whole black pepper from Costco.  I have been using it for years.  I do not have DH, but I know that I have healed from celiac disease (not actively flaring) based on repeat intestinal biopsies if that helps!  ?

I have dh & just use McCormick black pepper. McCormick single spices are fine. Here's a link to their contact & FAQ's page:

Stay away from PEPPER. 3 years celiac and PEPPER for me mimics "cross contamination " of gluten. As with any pepper(vegetable or spice). Dips like salsa STAY AWAY.

This link talks about spices as possible cross reactives to gluten. I have issues with nightshades. I realized pepper isnt a nightshade, and thought maybe I could eat it and ended up with a skin reaction. Interestingly enough the skin reaction stays just folliculitis if I don't combine foods I react to with marijuana. As soon as I throw marijuana in the mix blisters start to form. Otherwise the reaction is just folliculitis. Both rashes are generally on my butt, upper thighs and sometimes lower back. After I cut all foods I react to out for several months it seems I can tolerate adding them back in but only for 1 to two months before skin reactions occur. It starts as acne that is on my face, neck, back, chest, lower thighs, and then turns to follicultis on my butt. If I smoke pot on top of eating the reaction foods the rash looks like DH on my butt and upper thighs. I can watch it form instantly as I smoke.  The supposed DH heals up, no itch, no blisters, with 6000 mgs of lysine and vitamin C if I catch it right away. The folliculitis and acne heals up with application of apple cider vinegar followed by tea tree oil. Any of the skin conditions persist with continued exposure to the reaction foods but I can still keep symptoms at bay with the above mentioned remedies. In the absence of all reaction foods and marijuana I have not a single blemish and my skin is soft, smooth and perfect.

My old results are: The Tissue Transglutaminase IgA antibody - 0.5 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests 0.0 - 3.0 is normal) The Tissue Transglutaminase IgG antibody - 6.6 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests 0.0 - 3.0 is normal) Immunoglobulin A - 1.91 g/l (for the lab I did the tests 0.7 to 4 g/l is normal) IgA Endomysial antibody (EMA) - < 1:10 titer (for the lab I did the tests < 1:10 titer is normal) IgG Endomysial antibody (EMA) - < 1:10 titer (for the lab I did the tests < 1:10 titer is normal) Deamidated gliadin peptide IgA - 0.3 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests 0.0 - 6.0 is normal) Deamidated gliadin peptide IgG - 46.1 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests 0.0 - 6.0 is normal)   Then I didn't eat gluten for six months and after I started a gluten challenge. Before the challenge I did some tests as RMJ had suggested to do. My results: The Tissue Transglutaminase IgG antibody - 0.5 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests < 20 U/ml is normal)) Deamidated gliadin peptide IgG - 28 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests < 20 U/ml is normal)   As trents suggested I ate 6 slices of wheat bread before the tests during the challenge. My results: The Tissue Transglutaminase IgA antibody - 2.0 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests < 20 U/ml is normal) The Tissue Transglutaminase IgG antibody - 2.0 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests < 20 U/ml is normal) Immunoglobulin A - 1.31 g/l (for the lab I did the tests 0.7 to 4 g/l is normal) Deamidated gliadin peptide IgA - 2.0 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests < 20 U/ml is normal) Deamidated gliadin peptide IgG - 2.13 U/ml (for the lab I did the tests < 20 U/ml is normal)   As I can understand I don't have celiac disease.

So it sounds like Global Foods has adopted the FDA standard for "gluten free" advertising.

Agreed, I am disappointed in the recent GFCO findings as well and definitely don't hold them in as high of a regard as I used to. I did find on the Global Foods website after posting that their required ppm limit is 20ppm, which isn't as low as I had hoped. I'll email and report back. Thx.

Never heard of them. They give an email address so if I were you I would contact them and ask those questions. It would be wonderful if they had tighter requirements than GFCO in the sense of more frequent batch testing and even random testing. Recent news articles on this forum from back in this summer have revealed that GFCO is letting us down.

Two things: 1. If you are using drops 3x a day you should be sure to use preservative free. The preservatives themselves can cause irritation. 2. If the problem does not resolve, you may want to have a rheumatologist check for Sjogren's. There appears to be a relationship between celiac and Sjogren's.
