Red Wine

Think I just had a serve response to some red wine I drank last night, severe cramps, bloating, etc. I have never had a reaction like this to red wine, a new bottle I’ve never tried before. Has anyone had a gluten reaction to red wine?

I am a healed celiac (repeat biopsy confirmed) and I drink red wine on occasion.  No gluten reactions.  I do not drink it on a regular basis because it triggers my facial Rosacea which is probably due to the tannins found in red wine (grape skin).  Try drinking white.

Another possibility.  If you are newly diagnosed or undiagnosed, you may find wine hard to digest.  A damaged gut can not digest anything well.   For example, if I am exposed to gluten, it can hurt to digest ANY food for a few weeks. If my autoimmune gastritis is acting up, there is no way I can drink alcohol.

Odds are though, gluten was not in your wine.  What else did you eat?  Did you eat out?

I have had many different brands and types of red and white wine and had no gluten reactions.

I went wine tasting yesterday and had a gluten reaction, too. I experienced swelling (4 pounds fluid retention) and a minor flare of eczema and rosacea.

After some research, the curing of the wine barrels can often contain gluten.

What's a serve response?

Typo, I'm sure. Poster meant to type "severe."

I have severe reactions to wine because I have a sensitivity to Sulfites and will break out with rosacea.  Hypersensitivity to Sulfites can be life threatening.

As Count Dracula says, "I never drink....wine."  😼

The theory about the wheat paste used to seal the barrels being a cause of gluten reactions has largely been discredited I believe. Someone posted about that very recently but I don't have any links. It's more likely your reaction from drinking wine is due to something else as per what knitty kitty posted.

Edit: I have trouble with wine, red or white. It doesn't give me a celiac reaction but migraines. I'm wondering if it's the histamines.

I don't do well on wine either. It used to give me migraines, but since I've stopped eating grains, I can tolerate it much better. I do best on imported organic red wine.

Hi Cosyfeyre and welcome to the forum. Hashimoto's thyroiditis can cause moderately raised levels of tissue transglutaminase antibodies (as can other autoimmune and inflammatory conditions). This could explain the weak positive shown for tTG IgG. It is certainly worth following up. Some people can react to gluten without having coeliac disease, and many people react to the fructans present in grains like wheat.

Hey I’m new here and these are my test results for the first time I ever got them done. I have Hypothyroidism and Hashimotos too.  Immunoglobulin IgA is 299 normal Anti Gliadin Ab, IgA is a 4 normal Anti Gliadin Ab, IgG is a 2 normal Tissue Transglutaminase IgA is a <2 normal Tissue Transglutaminase IgG is a 7 weak positive  I’m waiting for my Doctor to get back to me about what to do now. I know gluten makes me sick plus a bunch of other symptoms too.

Welcome to the  forum, @Babygirl877! You may find that your gastritis and your gastroparesis improve once you begin following a gluten free diet consistently. But to arrive at consistency in eating gluten free can involve a real learning curve. This might help:

@ErinV, from you first post: " Her doctor’s office recently changed EMRs so I can’t remember the exact numbers of all her other blood tests, but I know she was positive for both genetic markers." But then you say in your most recent post, "We’ve all tested and neither of us, nor my other daughter have the genetic markers for it." Those two statements are in direct contradiction to one another. Where did she get the genes for potential celiac disease then?
