Could this all add up to celiac?

Hi all,

I'm a 24 year old male living in the UK. Truth be told I've been having a terrible time of things for a few years. It all started out with some chest pain for which I went to ED, I was told there was nothing wrong etc. The chest pain continued and branched out into other symptoms, arm/leg aches, jaw pain, headaches, stomach aches, lightheadedness, and most of all palpitations which really scare me.

I've been investigated thoroughly by cardiology with a number of tests (holters, echo's, CT's etc) and they've assured me my heart is structurally and electronically normal. I've also been investigated by gastroenterology, a barium swallow diagnosed some moderate acid reflux but nothing more. My bloods (other than raised liver enzymes) have always been largely normal.

I just can't get to the bottom of my symptoms and I've been looking for an overall diagnosis that would explain such a variety. I came across Celiac disease a few days ago and have done some reading, several of my symptoms seem to match up, particularly the headaches, reflux and maybe the palpitations? (Palps are my main point of worry and distress and they land me in my GP surgery or ED far too much). I have noticed that my symptoms can be worse following a big meal and when lying down, my diet has been a bit gluten/starch based - I am going to trial cutting this out.

Has anyone else had a similar experience to me?

Thanks so much.

You may have Histamine Intolerance.  I would suggest reading up on the topic.  Hope this helps you.

I too had panic attacks and what I thought were heart symptoms before my diagnosis. There are heart issues associated with celiac disease:

https://www.celiac.com/celiac-disease/celiac-disease-amp-related-diseases-and-disorders/heart-failure-and-celiac-disease/

but to me, since you've been examined and have a normally functioning heart, it seems like there could be other causes.

Thiamine deficiency can cause many of the symptoms you've described.  Palpitations, headaches, POTS (Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome), lightheadedness, muscle aches (especially tender or sore calves), acid reflux, elevated liver enzymes.

Have your doctor test your thiamine level.

Doctors don't usually think of thiamine deficiency unless you're an alcoholic, but a high carbohydrate--empty calorie diet can cause it as well as malabsorption caused by Celiac Disease.

Do have your thiamine level checked soon!

Thanks so much for replying!  No I haven't been limiting gluten prior to this test, I didn't know the Dr even tested for it until I got my results. These were the only celiac related pathology that was tested for. I am seeing my Dr on Monday so hopefully she can shed some more light!

New here as well lots of things learning I’ve discovered lots of foods have sneaky gluten so be mindful how is it going?? I have issues when I do cocktails 🍸 I don’t know if it is gluten free or not but get horrible side effects and so many others ooh well we are all learning how to cope with this….

Thanks a lot! I will search that too. I also talked to another doctor and she assured me there is no gluten in this type of antibiotics. Anyway i started the administration of Augmentin on my girl this evening. I hope there will be no problems.

Good afternoon, I don’t know if anyone here has ever tried Braswell’s products like their marmalades or jellies? Are they gluten-free? On the ingredients says “cane sugar, cherries (cherries, cane sugar), strawberries, corn syrup, pectin and citric acid. That ingredient list is from their berry preserve bottle. Most of them say the same for ingredients, but I’m not sure if it is okay to consume.

I have seen this problem many times. I always get in touch with the company. Most times they tell me if I'm just gluten free it is ok, but do not eat it if you are celiac. Calling the company is the best way when you are not sure. Yesterday I had a different example of products being marked gluten-free.  I love chocolate and have a piece each day. The chocolate bar I like is Chocolove. When I bought one this week it was not marked gluten-free. I called the company to find out why and if it was still gluten-free.  Turns out the manufacturer decided there was too much on the wrapper and took off the gluten-free label. It is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
