I've had this exact symptom for 3 years now. I have intense pressure in my head and its always worse after eating. The veins in my temples and forehead also buldge sometimes. Its also triggered by chemicals of any kind. Its most intense between my eyes, at the temples and also in my jaw. There is swelling as well although its not noticeable to others. Its not gluten-related as far as I know cuz it happens regardless. I just got dx'd with C-Diff infection and am starting treatment tomorrow. Doctor thinks this might be causing alot if not all of my problems...but will have to see what happens following treatment.

Yes! I get these too. These headaches were one of my worst symptoms. They are better since going gluten-free last year but they still seem to happen at times. I figure it's a reaction to something I am eating, however, I have no idea what.

perhaps they are related to blood sugar or due to food allergies/intolerances?

Thanks for the replies!

For me, I'm pretty sure its from intolerances from my immune system being all whacked out right now and from leaky gut.

Yes I get pressure head aches too. It is almost like sinus pressure for me. I also get feverish about 1 hour after I eat anything. My forehead and neck get burning hot. I am seeing a derm about this next week.

I've had this happen to. Also, when I lay down at night after eating, I can hear my head throbbing on the pillow- like my heart is beating in my head- does that happen to anyone?

Do your pressure headaches ever go away? I get pressure headaches after meals expecially at night. They make me feel really sick and dizzy...do you feel the same way?

On a different topic...

Did you have both a positive blood test and biopsy?

I get the heart pounding feeling when I eat dairy alot. I used to get that feeling at night in bed all the time but once I changed my diet it went away. I used to think I was losing it. I was always told that I was experiencing anxiety symptoms but it wasn't. It was gluten. I used to be able to feel it in my hands.

Yeah they were gone all summer when I only ate meat and veggies.

My headaches dont make me feel dizzy though. No I didnt have positive blood or biopsy. My bloodwork was 2 weeks after starting the diet. It was negative so I went back to eating gluten and forgot about it but I got very sick and a couple months later I wasnt able to get out of bed and had lost 25 lbs. I went back on the diet and had my biopsy 6 months later. It was kind of pointless and we knew it was gonna be negative but the GI wanted to take a look anyway and make sure nothing else was going on. I got tested through Enterolab 4 months into the diet and was positive for everything. I didnt want to go back on gluten for the tests and the GI didnt think it would be a good idea either so we just went ahead with the biopsy knowing it wasnt gonna show any damage after 6 months gluten-free.

Yes - I was also diagnosed with an adrenal insufficiency and now wonder if it is related?

Also feel very dizzy and lightheaded after eating especially at night but this is new to me only after starting the gluten-free diet.

these type of headaches were my primary focus for the past 4 or 5 years.. I've pretty much had a headache every day since at least the start of 2003... I've had 2 MRI's, seen multiple doctors, had a glucose tolerance test... all mostly negative (glucose tolerance test - borderline hypoglycemic/reactive hypoglycemia)... I also took daily preventative headache medication for 3 years as well as a variety of meds at the onset of headaches (almost daily in addition to the preventative at one point)

since going on an elimination diet for a brief period of time in early December and now being firmly gluten-free for a month, I stopped daily preventative medication and only use onset medication once or twice a week... (only once in the past 2 plus weeks, knock on wood)... but that's not to say my headaches have gone away... I still get them daily... but I think I'm tolerating them better and they fluctuate naturally in intensity throughout the day... I think for myself, I'm going to have to keep trying some different things (accupuncture, exercise, chiropractor, etc.) in addition to the diet to completely get rid of my headaches, but it seems like the nutritional aspect is helping

qwertyui Rookie

Does anyone get really hot? Like burning sweating hot? I have been getting so hot after I eat, particularily after dinner that I have to go stand outside in the snow! I am 35, so maybe this is early menopause, or something like that, but it pretty wild.

slpinsd Contributor

I have had night sweats, and I'm only 31. You are probably not menopausal, but gluten sensitivity can cause some adrenal and/or hormonal imbalances. These have very gradually ceased since I went gluten-free.

DavidB, I also was diagnosed with adrenal insufficiency. Sometimes I feel lightheaded when going from laying down to standing. Yes- it is possibly related. I really think the head-pounding thing is gluten- cuz it's really declined since I went gluten-free 1 month ago. What are your other symptoms of adrenal insufficiency, if you don't mind me asking?

I have been getting this headache since 2011 (it is 2017 now). I am myself a medical doctor (a forensic specialist actually), and during my medical studies, I never studied this disease in my books. After I got this headache, I was sure, this disease is not in the medical books, so despite working in a tertiary care hospital, it never occurred to me to get advice from a traditional allopathic doctor. I visited homeopathic doctors instead, who are so sought after in India. After a long and unsatisfactory treatment, I started visiting allopathic doctors, and after much hit and trial, I finally went to neurology department of GB Pant hospital, New Delhi, where the HOD prescribed Allegra 120 mg for me daily in the morning at about 11 am. It is an antihistaminic. When I asked him to tell me the cause of it, he told me that eating is causing histamine to be liberated from somewhere - most probably my GIT - and this must be countered. He also told me that my "trigeminal-vascular axis" [whatever he meant by that] is getting activated by histamine" I started this medicine, without much hope, but it worked wonders. The headache disappeared within 7 days. Afters several months, I decided, it was no use taking it daily. So I stopped taking it. Nothing happened for one week, but after that it started happening again. The headache [after food but never at other times] is so bad, I started taking Allegra again, but it didn't go immediately. It took about one week. Since last 6 years, this has happened to me 4-5 times. The cycle is like this. I take allegra -> headache disappears (i.e. there is no headache after food) after about a week -> 6-8 months pass -> I get complacent -> stop taking drug ->headache starts within a week ->I start taking Allegra again -> headache disappears in a week.

In Oct 2013, I had a double bypass surgery. I was 57 at that time.

This time (i.e. in Mar-Apr 2017), when I stopped taking medicine, the intensity of headache was unbearable. It had increased! Sometimes I felt like committing suicide. Once I told my postgraduate student to take me to Operation theater to get me general anesthesia. He thought I was joking although I meant it. Then I asked him to give a fortwin injection. He refused that too. I thought it was the worst kind of torture, and if histamine indeed was causing it, the best way to torture someone was to inject histamine in his system. Finally I took about 8 pain killing medications, one after one during next hour. That gave me partial relief. My neurologist advised me MRI this time, while earlier he had vehemently opposed it. When I asked him why MRI this time, he told me that it was because the "character of my pain had changed" Thankfully, it came normal. One night, when I started having headache after dinner, and my wife did not allow me any more pain killing medicines (she thought those medicines were causing harm to my heart),  I cried like a child and prayed to God to help me and make me get rid of this terrible headache.

This time headache took about 10 days to disappear. So one thing is clear. As my age is advancing (I am 61 now), the headache is increasing in intensity, and it takes longer to go away, after I start Allegra.

I now intend never to stop taking Allegra, because this has come as a boon for me. Like many commentators here, my headache is concentrated on both temples, and nowhere else. During the bouts of headache, I press my both thumbs against my both temples with all my might, and that gives partial relief.

I am making this post, mainly to help my colleagues who are suffering like me. Try this and God willing, this would help you too. I have searched medical journals (especially one called "Cephalalgia", which means headache in plain English), but found very little relevant information. Virtually nothing that recommended antihistamines for this. So I thank my neurologist to recommend this off-the-book medicine for me

Anil,

I understand how uncomfortable migraines can be.  I've suffered from them for many years, too.

I found several scientific studies that suggest that Riboflavin (vitamin B 2), omega 3 fatty acids, and magnesium may help.  My migraines began to decrease in intensity and frequency after taking these supplements.

This article explains more about these and some herbal remedies:

I sincerely hope this helps.

Thanks Knitty kitty. My headaches have thankfully stopped (since about a couple of days), and I cannot stop thanking God!

I wish I never need any medicines, besides Allegra. But just in case! Can you please tell me exact dosages, and exact timings of those drugs. What about relation to food (empty stomach or after food).

Furthermore, was your character of pain same as mine, i.e. after food.

You will not believe that I never got any kind of headache anytime in my life. In fact I used to ask people what headache is (honest!).

Since last 6-7 years, the story has changed.

Anil, I'm so glad you are feeling better!

The article suggests 600mg of magnesium (too much magnesium will cause diarrhea), 400mg of riboflavin (too much will cause tingling or flushing), and 500mg of omega 3.

I took my supplements in divided doses with each meal.  I also take a B-Complex vitamin that has 50mg of all the B vitamins and 400mg of folate.  I take the B vitamins at breakfast and lunch because they give you lots of energy.

And I take vitamin D (1000 IU).  Mast cell activation syndrome (cycling lady mentioned it earlier) is linked to vitamin D deficiency.

Yes, I would get headaches after I ate, especially if I ate high histamine containing foods like fermented foods (pickles, sauerkraut), citrus fruits, smoked fish, cashews, soy sauce, wine, and hard cheeses.

Keeping a food and migraine journal may help you pinpoint foods that you have the most  trouble with.

Best wishes on your journey to health.

Knitty Kitty

I have a question for Anil

Can you please tell me if you had other symptoms other than this headache.

I also suffer from a tension headache plus other symptoms like bloating , depression, Irritability and Anxiety after eating

I had this tenstion headache since about 5 years  now but they getting worse since the last summer. I also lost 17 KG  recently.

I visited more than 7 Doctors in two countries, been hospitalized for one week und had blood tests, Gastroscopy, Endoscopie , X-ray ... and all were negative.

I'm doubting Mast Cell Activation Syndrom or Reactive Hypoglycemia  but non of the doctors are willing to investigate und they always advice me to visit a Psychiatric.

I have no idea what to do and I'm very desperate.

Can someone please help

Thanks in Advance

I also experience this after eating such as sweets, sour and those with caffein. I feel dizzy, bloated and irritable and an air head pressure whenever I ate those.

I consulted a doctor and wants me to conduct different laboratory examination.

And by the way, my doctor told me to avoid food such as chocolates, juices, caffein, dairy food and spicy food. Now I am only eating veggies and water only. And I feel better.

Hello all with these horrible pressure headaches I get all the exact symptoms and the nasty pressure points in my skull at the base and upper area. I get these associated when I'm glutened but it's actually from lectins and GMO foods. GMO foods are exactly the splicing of several plant lectins combined and all livestock ie chickens cattle have same issues with gut and yes it's in the meats too also Google meat allergy, I've a type o neg blood, I FRUSTRATEDINGLY DONT GO TO ANY DOCTORS OF ANY KIND OF WHICH THE WORD LECTINS PROBABLY ISNT ALLOWED ON THIS SITE..Google GMO LECTINS and MONSANTO..they take plant's lectins which are BACTERIA hence the flu like ill feeling, sweats, bad brain fog which is a neurotoxicity affect from lectins, my sinuses go hay wire!, muscles ache badly, eyes face, baggy eyes, major histamine release..I've had all the typical symptoms over yrs change...msg and sulphites, salycilates, amines..and the  immune systems so to speak for plants. My small intestine swells , and I'm glutened from tomatoes (sauce), potatoe and corn, wheat, SOY...all wang me out horribly. That's what lectins do naturally to animals the thwart being digested ...they disrupt our digestive tracts horribly..took me 20 plus yrs, I'm 46, to figure it out...GO TO A NUTRITIONIST..GMO LECTINS ARE WHAT MAKE WHEAT AND PEANUTS SOO ALLERGIC..IM SO FED UP AND DISGUSTED READING LOST PEOPLE MISGUIDED IVE NEVER POSTED ON ANY SITE BEFORE...currently I'm a dishwasher at a ruby Tuesday's..I used to be an aircraft mechanic for a major airline..my health and slowly went down hill. So very very recently I've discovered this, they're also blood type specific..where and how have I learned this...chiropractors also. One forum explained that a patient's Harvard educated G.I. specialist vaguely even heard of lectins. Thank you Monsanto and big pharma , also BT pesticide causes leaky gut too, it's designed to do same to catipillars too. I never believed it until my gut is now so sensitive my symptoms last for almost  a full seven day week. I just have to ride it out and take chamomile tea, organic $ brands using several tea bags and helps. Good luck to you all and leave no stone unturned in your journeys. Also look up psoriasis info caused by lectins too.

i also simultaneously get uti symptoms ie bacteria from lectins, detox tea and fresh lemon flushes it out,...

Soo all gluten free foods are using GMO ingredients corn starch, potato starch " modified food starch", etc etc so I can't and don't bother with shopping gluten free...read any and all Gluten Free labels..and compare non-GMO labels vs gluten free without GMO free label, most health and gluten-free bars are all soy, personally we're being scammed...this wont be posted I'm sure...why haven't I ever had a allergist explain this to me ..I'min the U.S., I've learned this from European, Australian, based nutrition sources online.

@Kathleen JJ, thanks for the update! Yes, as Cristiana mentioned gluten-free facsimile baked products are generally less nutritious than their wheat counterparts. In part this is due to the fact that the ingredients themselves have less nutritional value (lots of rice, potato and tapioca starch) and in part because the alternative "flours" used in gluten-free baked food products may not be fortified with vitamins and minerals by government mandates as is their wheat counterpart. At least that is how it is in the U.S. and it sounds like it is in the U.K. as well. Having said that, I would suggest you make sure your son gets plenty of fruits and veggies, fresh meat, fish, and eggs in his diet and a good gluten-free multivitamin as well. It's not hard to ensure adequate nutrition when you are a celiac but you may have to be more deliberate at it than do non celiacs. Also, be aware that "cross reactivity" with other foods is common in the celiac population. This can be an issue with foods whose proteins are similar to gluten. The two most common offenders are oats (the protein is avenin) and dairy (the protein is casein). Soy, corn and eggs are also common cross reactors but less so. Just be aware of this and keep an eye out if your son doesn't seem to improve on the gluten free diet alone. The reactions to these foods mimic the reaction to gluten. One small study found that 50% of celiacs react to CMP (Cow's Milk Protein or casein) like they do gluten.

That is such a lovely post - thank you so much, @Kathleen JJ for taking the time to write.  I am so glad I actually saw it as at the moment I'm not really supposed to be looking at the forum.  I have a couple of long overdue work projects so I was taking a breaks from the forum to concentrate on my writing. 🙂 You have handled/are handling this situation so well.  What you say about gluten-free alternatives is so true about being laden with fats and sugar, and what I find very difficult to understand is that sometimes in the UK cereals and bread aren't fortified in the same way that glutenous equivalents are - surely if anyone needs minerals and vitamins added, it's coeliacs?!  Anyway, the best way forward is to cook from scratch when time and money allows. Here is a standard cake recipe.  You will need to source gluten free self-raising flour.  If that isn't a thing you have where you live, you will need plain gluten free flour then have to add the raising agent/baking powder separately, according to the brand's instructions.  This cake can be filled with jam, or with real cream and strawberries, or topped with melted chocolate or just powdered sugar.  Or use frosting.  If you look up different flavours of Victoria Sandwiches, you can see you can make them coffee flavoured, chocolate flavoured, or lemon, by adding those flavourings.   If you need me to supply that info let me know. This cake was made famous by Queen Victoria and is a staple of British baking.  Loosely based on the French Quatre Quarts cake, another way of making it is weighing the eggs with shells on, say three, and then that same weight is applied to the margarine, flour and sugar that you use.  Make sure you prepare the tins well, as the cakes stick easily. https://www.freee-foods.co.uk/recipes/delicious-gluten-free-victoria-sponge/ You can make a third layer, it looks quite impressive stacked up high! I am sure others will suggest recipes if you put in a request on a specific thread. Lovely to catch up with your news, and I hope that you will stick around for a bit to let us know how things go! Bon appetit!

@cristiana First of all I want to thank you for your clear and gentle approach to my questions and emails. I was quite in shock because we were totally not expecting this scenario. We're 2 weeks later now and things have settled more. After the biopsie came back positive the rest of our family got tested as well but non of us have it. But now we know what we're up against, we told him. We laid out a table with crisps he likes (and are gluten-free) and had a little festive Friday-night moment and then told him that we finally had the results of his test. We had explained the gastroscopy to him that the doctor had found some substances in his blood and wanted to look at this tummy from the inside. We told him that he had seen that there was a little wound there, explaining the horrible pains he had had. That it was easy to cure this wound and make that it never would come back: leaving out some type of foods. Both our children had been asking us for a long time to take a packed lunch to school instead of eating at the cafeteria so we ended with the 'good news' that they now can bring a packed lunch. Our daughter was over the moon, our son at first as well but then he was really sad about leaving his friends behind at the dinner table (children who eat hot meals and packed lunches are different dining areas) and that he would not be able to sit with his friends who take packed lunches as the seats are set and he's the last one in and would have to sit alone. So that was quite sad [I went to the headmaster and asked her to maybe have a shuffle of the diner tables after New Years so he also can sit with a friend and she was going to look into it]   We are now trying out different types of foods. I at this point have no idea what to put in his packed lunch as before I'd take some sandwiches and put cheese or ham on them, but the gluten-free bread I've found so far doesn't really allow for that (it breaks and falls apart). So now I'm on a hunt for nicely tasting things to put in his lunchbox.   I've been shocked somewhat to see that a lot of gluten-free products are indeed gluten-free and thus healthier for him, but are also contain much more fats and sugar then their gluten full counterparts... I didn't expect that to be honest...   Anyway, you mentioned that your daughter and her friends love your gluten-free cake. I'm very interested in a recipe. It is customary in Belgium that if a child has his birthday, they give a treat to the rest of the class, and that treat is most often cake or cupcakes. He will not be able to taste anyones treats anymore so I asked the teacher for all the birthdays and am planning to bake some for him right before those birthdays, give to the teacher so she can give to him. But this entails I have a good cake recipe 🤭. Would you be so kind to share this with me?   Kind regards, Kathleen

Yes stress can .make the pain worse. That being said it is taking years for my body to heal. I am not able to eat out as 98 % of restaurants do not know how to cook for celiacs.  I only eat out on special occasions. Any time I eat gluten I feel there is a tourch going through my digestive system specifically in the area you have mentioned.  Like where the deudenal is . I am very sensitive to cross contamination so any small amount of gluten makes me sick.
