So ofcourse I took it upon myself to call In n' Out Burger just now. The woman at customer service said they are a slow growing company but they do infact have plans to expand to the East Coast. She couldn't really give me a time fram... but atleast this means that in my lifetime we will have an In n' Out Burger - LOL!!

that would be a dream, when i visited cali a few years back i ate there everyday i was there cause i knew we couldnt get them on the east coast....YUM that would be a great replacement for the McDs stuff!

They are a slow growth company because they are family owned and VERY particular about who gets thier franchise, which is awesome because it keeps the quality up. Also very religious, I am always tickled by the proverbs on the cups when I'm drinking a shake.

I hope they keep expanding, because they rock, but I hope they stick to thier standards as well. McD's was a family owned small burger chain once upon a time.

Think I can coax them up to Canada? :unsure::( Sounds like an awesome alternative to McD's....... Maybe they would trust their family business to celiacs who know how important it is to keep up quality control.....

Actually I think this is the reason they are slow to expand; they want to do it right. Because I made a joke saying and when they come here can they make sure to bring the protein burger with them. She said that all their items and practices come with the additions :)

Does In/Out have a website?

In/Out was singled out in the book "Fast Food Nation" for being a good fast food franchise on many levels -- the beef isn't frozen, they treat their workers really well etc. It's not just the Celiacs who sing its praises. Lots of people who are simply health conscious in general love it.

Also, the protein burger is actually a popular item on their menu. A lot of non-celiac friends of mine who live on the West Coast and are "doing atkins" get it all the time. It's nice to know that they probably won't take it off the menu because it's profitable...and not just a "favor" they are doing for the celiac community.

Anything other than thier basic things are not on thier menu, you just have to know how to order. They are VERY serious about thier food. They also do a "grilled cheese" for vegetarians ( obviously not gluten-free, they use a bun), its not on thier menu, but they're cook it away from a meat area if you ask. They don't make anything that could cross-contaminate thier fries, no breaded foods of any kind other than thier buns. When I order I do ask for a clean grill away from the buns, they have a grill in the back that they leave open for special orders I have watched them every time and they are very careful. No offense to anyone in the fast food industry, but the people that work there tend to be a bit more attentive and on the ball than your standard fast food place.

Its not fast food, its In-N-Out.

When i told her that i got diagnosed with celiac disease, she responded, "we learned about that at work." I think that they go out of their way to keep their employees informed about food allergies and special orders.

Oh and another tip, if you want crispy fries, order them "well done"

They can't actually take the protein style "off" the menu; it's just their standard burger wrapped in lettuce instead of a bun. All of their burgers come with lettuce and tomato so they will always have lettuce on the premises.

      I have no specific recommendations but I would suggest looking for products that are advertised as produced in a dedicated gluten-free facility. That should eliminate one possible route of cross contamination. It doesn't guarantee that none of the ingredients going into the product are totally gluten free but is should eliminate adding more CC to the mix via processing machinery.  One of the issues you may be experiencing is that testing has shown that a significant percentage of "Certified Gluten Free" products can test far in excess of 10ppm. There was an article appearing in this forum back last summer outlining the results of testing that showed this to be true. So, it may be somewhat of a pig in a poke when you buy this stuff, regardless of how it is billed. It may be safe for you if it actually fits within the stated requirements of it's billing.

      I can still have a reaction from “certified gluten free” products I don’t like having to use the eat and see what my body does approach are there really any purely gluten free products or do I just have to make all of my own food?
