High Fructose Corn Syrup

Post gluten-free, (and pre gluten-free, actually), I have the worst problem digesting anything with High Fructose Corn Syrup in it. I have noticed a consistent pattern- I injest, there's the cramps, then I'm in the bathroom all day. I think I must have a fructose intolerance/malabsorption. I know I've read some on this being possibly related to Celiac. I'm having such a hard time finding things to eat on top of egg, sugar, lactose, multiple fruit intolerances on top of the gluten. Has anyone else noticed improvement on cutting this out-totally?

It exagerates my hypoglycemic symptoms, so I generally avoid it. that's about it, though - I don't have a problem if I have small quantities of something with this ingredient on occasion.

I avoid it because I've read that it's sort of NON-food... just a chemical sugar that NONE of us need. It's not that hard to avoid as I'm reading the labels anyhow.

I was just reading that fructose intolerance is a big problem for a lot of people, and although I hadn't read this before, it was listed as a major intolerance along with gluten, soy, dairy. I avoid it as much as I can, and actually, since I'm trying to be gluten/dairy free, eliminating those things eliminates a lot of the fructose sources. A lot of people write that fructose is one of the worst things out there.

I noticed I have a problem with corn and so I had to eliminate all high fructose corn syrup - but - mine is not just the syrup but all corn.

I was informed by a friend of mine that high fructose corn syrup is frightening in many ways. One of them is that it turns off the body's ability to know when it's full, another is that it spikes insulin levels dramatically. I'm not sure if these other things have been documented in humans, but in rats it caused cirrosis of the liver and infertility. It's horrible horrible stuff!

Corn syrup is added to just about everything in a jar, bottle, box, etc. Gum, pasta sauce, pizza sauce, catsup, soda, cereal, etc...it is in EVERYTHING. Unfortunately, I can't remember everything because I quit buying it over a year ago but look at everything and it is there!

You have to really look, even in a health food store, for products that do not contain high fructose corn syrup.

I am constantly amazed at all the place I find it! And, interestingly enough... I often DON'T find it in the cheap store brand of things like pasta sauce or BBQ sauce and DO find it in the higher priced brand names!!

I believe it's the main ingredient in cola. Doesn't do a body good.

I was reading that cola used to have sugar....but they found it was much much cheaper to use high fructose corn syrup...plus, it's actually very addictive and as someone said earlier, it impairs the body's ability to interpret fullness "satiety" signals. Some people hypothesize that the increased presence of high fruc. corn syrup in so many foods is behind overeating and the subsequent high rate of overweight in our society. Bottom line: it's really really bad for you and no one should eat it.

it did - and it was *so* much more delicious. if you want to see for yourself, try Boylan's Natural Cane Cola (look out - Boylan's has a "Natural" line and a regular one with artificial flavors - the Natural is not only healthier, but way more delicious.) Before I gave up caffeine, I had a serious addiction to Cane Cola. Ideally, you want some crushed ice....

Whole Foods finally replaced their cheap-o gross high fructose corn syrup in their 365 brand sodas with delicious cane sugar. There's a note about it on the cans. Another concern with hfcs is that it's often GMO corn, which is bad news for everyone.

UPDATE - GLUTEN ALERT: yikes - it's almost 2am and i'm in pain from apparently glutening myself with Boylan's Root Beer - they use the natural flavors which include...EXTRACTS. i'm guessing that's what's messing me up right now. so forget i said anything about their delicious sugar colas. this sucks. :(

      PS  You asked about severe symptoms.  Yes, I can tell you that the one and only time I have taken a really major gluten hit in recent times I had chills, sweats, vomited and thought I was going to pass out.  I also felt my heartbeat was affected.  I was really concerned at the severity of the reaction. And that was down to eating one piece of homemade fruitcake - a relative of mine had made me a lovely cake but thought all Dove flour was gluten-free, it isn't, they also do organic flour!

      Hi @Louise Broughton Fellow Brit here! I am sorry to hear of your health issues. If I may chip in here, I think it might be worth your while at least having the blood test to see if you have raised antibodies. Whilst I agree under ideal circumstances people need to eat gluten for a period before both the blood test and endoscopy, it could well be that your antibodies are still raised enough to show that you are a coeliac.  I gave up gluten in 2013 and it took around 8 years before my blood tests were normal again, and I was very strict with my diet. To save time I've just copied this over from a recent post on another thread and adapted it for you - forgive me, but the advice is almost the same I have just given to another UK coeliac whose daughter has been having issues: Generally speaking most UK coeliacs will get a lot of help from the NHS, such as a nutritionist, annual blood tests and reviews with a gastroenterologist to check for dietary compliance and any complications that can arise from coeliac disease, monitoring for osteopenia/porosis, which is something that coeliacs can be prone to, extra vaccinations where required, and in some regions of the UK, gluten-free staple foodstuffs on prescription.  Also, it has been my experience that once being on the books of a gastroenterologist means I have been able to make appointments direct with the hospital to see one, rather than being re-referred by a GP which saves so much time. If for some reason your are finding it to get tested under the NHS you may wish to think of one other option: going private just for the diagnosis.  I did this, with a Nuffield based gastroenterologist, who also works for the NHS.  This sped up the diagnosis process by a few months and once diagnosed by him, he offered to put me straight into the NHS for a nutritionist and the other benefits listed above.  If interested, you can ring their offices and find out how much it will cost.  Usually their secretaries are very conversant with the system so should be able to give you the info you require. It took me 1-2 years to figure out the diet, but there is a lot more info now that is available so you should be able to do this faster.  This article has some detailed information on how to be 100% gluten-free, so it may be helpful (be sure to also read the comments section.): Many people with celiac disease, especially those who are in the 0-2 year range of their recovery, have additional food intolerance issues which could be temporary. To figure this out you may need to keep a food diary and do an elimination diet over a few months. Some common food intolerance issues are dairy/casein, eggs, corn, oats, and soy. The good news is that after your gut heals (for most people who are 100% gluten-free this will take several months to two years) you may be able to slowly add some these items back into your diet after the damaged villi heal.       I am so grateful to see this thread!! I found your thread three days after eating Daiya cheese. I had been suffering with severe indigestion with spasms and cramping under my ribs starting a half hour after eating it. I had contacted my doctor about my symptoms because I have kidney stones and thought they might be the cause. He advised me to go to the emergency room. I did. I had blood, urine, echo, and CT scans. They all showed normal. The doctor actually told me to use heating pads and Tylenol.    After I saw this thread, I was convinced it was the cheese. I had an idea to take syrup of ipecac to clear my stomach. Online, I found advice that, before using it, you should call the poison control center. I’m so glad I did!  The fellow in the poison control center told me first of all that syrup of ipecac only works if you use it up to two hours after you have ingested the thing. He said that the Daiya cheese has extremely high level of coconut oil, which can cause bloating and obstruction. He advised me to take over the counter simethicone regularly. I am on day four of his protocol and the pains have moved down to my intestines and are now at a tolerable level.
