Waterville Valley, Nh

Guest BERNESES

This past weekend my husband and I went skiing at Waterville Valley in NH (only 2 hours from Boston) and we got stuck overnight because of white-out conditions on the road we had to take home (there was later a 50 car pile up- glad we missed that one). The skiing was great. I had brought my own food for lunch and there was even a microwave in the base lodge to heat it up.

I was a little freaked because I haven't been eating out lately and we were going to go out for dinner. But it was wonderful! We ate at Aglio, a new Italian restaurannt in Town square and it was phenomenal. I talked to the manager Dan first who was extremely accomodating and told me if there wasn't anything on the menu that I wanted he would have the chef make something for me (like risotto). I found a dish on the menu- pork loin with vegetables, figs, carmelized onions and gorgonzola cheese and they gave me fresh veggies instead of pasta. It was to die for! And no reaction.

He said they are very used to food allergies/intolerances because they get so many kids. And we got to ski in 6 inches of powder the next day. Two thumbs up!!!!!

Sounds like the perfect winter weekend :)

Hi Patti- It was! I was so psyched because it's the first time I've been skiing since I got sick and I was like "Oh my God! I've finally recovered enough to have the energy to do this again!" It made me feel so good because skiing is one of my greatest loves but I was too sick to go last winter and only just recently I've finally felt like I had the energy.

Also, right before getting sick last winter, I had a fall skiing that crushed me (physical therapy, neck brace, ugh!) and I've been pretty hesitant about going. I think I'm back- look out mountains!

Thank you. I already cut out dairy and eggs because I found out I was having a problem with them. To be honest I’m just getting worn out 😂

Hi Kitty, thank you for your e mail,  I have seen a nutritionist who seemed to be happy with the food diary I had been keeping and nothing was mentioned about extra vitamins, and I’m still using milk etc . The steroids seem to be working and everything is functioning as it should however,  the course of tablets finish at the end of February and I have an appointment with the consultant early April probably followed by another endoscopy, as far as I’m aware I have not been tested for vitamin B and will definitely discuss it with the doctor on my next visit.

It might be understandable to say "friends or family weeded me or you out of their lives". Some people are fearful of getting out of their comfortable known lives and having to make changes to accommodate another.   If they are too uncomfortable to walk a mile with me, I shake the dust off my feet and journey on.  They're just not ready to learn that lesson.  But you confidently keep going on your journey.  They can catch up later.

You might also be sensitive to other things while you are healing. Dairy, for example. It won't harm you from a celiac standpoint but is inflammatory and could be bothering you. Have you been keeping a food & symptom journal? Might be worth it for a week to see if you notice something you are eating prior to the times you feel your worst. I hope you start feeling better soon.

Someone recently recommended Superfoods for looking up recipes free of allergens or intolerances.  It's a web site but there's also an app.
