Deli Meat

Hello all,

I have felt like junk for the last couple days which I had attributed to eating more carbs than I'm use to. Just really rotten and irritable, maybe a little wack of the hypoglycemia.

But...

I have been eating Just Roast Beef from Wegmans a grocery store. Its suppose to be pure beef and I believe them.

What I never thought about before this night was how much gluten can get me and how much could be from the slicer. I had never thought about it before but it kinda makes sense.

Anyone ever been glutened by a dirty slicer?

Thanks

Eric

Damn I thought I was already good at this. I think I made my first major faux pas.

Sorry you got glutened from Weggies :(

I'm terrified of the probable CC on the slicers, so I just buy oscar mayer deli meats.

A lot of the cheaper quality deli stuff is full of wheat fillers, like cheap bologna.

Either go prepackaged, or go to Wegmans really early in the morning before the rush.

Wegman's sells their own brand of cold cuts pre-sliced in those little plastic containers and they are clearly marked gluten free. I've never had a problem with them.

Sorry you're not feeling so well!!

If you have boars head and it is available to get.....GET THAT. I have had no problems with the brand. I could see you having a problem with cross contamination and the slicer. Where I get my cold cuts, they have a dedicated slicer for me. Actually the only thing that is cut on the slicer is the lettuce.

You should ask them if they could keep a slicer aside for you. Or maybe place an order in the morning before they cut anything else and pick it up when you can. Places are usually accomodating. I would not see a problem with them doing it in the morning.

Good luck and hope that you feel better soon. :)

Applegate farms makes prepackaged deli meats that are clearly labeled gluten-free... they are also hormone free, nitrate and nitrite free and antibiotic free... once you open them though they go bad within days so you have to eat em up quick... (no preservatives!)

I prefer the prepackaged deli meats, no risk of CC....try Hillshire Farms or Sara Lee

I try and go to delis where they only have Boar's Head. There is a deli a couple blocks from me at work that all their cold cuts are BH, and when they make my lettuce wrap they put down a couple sheets of paper on the counter so nothing touches it. I think the guys in there all hate the me (I don't think they don't believe me that I'm not just on some crazy low carb diet), but I don't care because I always have a yummy sandwich and have yet to have CC issue there.

I was getting meat at the deli and asking the clerk to wipe down the blade before she cut my order. We got to talking and I told her about Celiac. She actually suggested the prepackaged meat because it was all done on one cutter and there was less of a chance of cross contamination. She pointed out the store brand meats to me, which I looked at, and a lot of them did not appear to have gluten in them.

This list is from the Hormel web site:

Pre-Packaged Refrigerated Lunch Meats Not Containing Gluten

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Black Forest Ham

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Cooked Corned Beef

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Cooked Ham

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Cooked Pastrami

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Double Smoked Ham

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Honey Ham

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Oven Roasted Turkey Breast

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Prosciuto Ham

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Seasoned Roast Beef

• HORMEL® Deli Sliced Smoked Turkey Breast

• HORMEL® HOMELAND® Hard Salami

• HORMEL® NATURAL CHOICE™ Honey Deli Ham

• HORMEL® NATURAL CHOICE™ Smoked Deli Ham

• HORMEL® NATURAL CHOICE® Honey Deli Turkey

• HORMEL® NATURAL CHOICE® Oven Roasted Deli Turkey

• HORMEL® NATURAL CHOICE® Smoked Deli Turkey

I make chef's salad's with the Hormel ham and Kraft shredded cheese (does not use gluten to keep the cheese from sticking together) quite regularly. The ham, already shredded cheese, grape tomatoes, cucumbers, other chopped veggies to taste and a "bag" of salad mix makes a quick meal. :)

I will not touch the meat from the deli. I am feeling so good I don't want to get sick! I get Oscar Mayer in the plastic containers. They are good!

I use Dapsone for my dermatitis herpetiformis. Was not an issue in the beginning of diagnosis. Once I did the covid vaccine it changed and now I cannot stop using the medicine for more than 24 hours or it flares up with a vengeance. Then it takes just over two weeks for the med to get it back under control. My dermatologist was able to identify and treat it, fortunately for me I was her third patient with dermatitis herpetiformis to have a reaction post vaccine. Trial and error with other antibiotics and a ton of steroids prior to this med. Not cheap and can be problematic for liver and pancreas.

Thanks, Knitty Kitty. No, I'm just taking B12...also a vitamin D3.  For gerd - Pantoprozole. Trents, thanks for the links. There's a lot to digest there (pun intended), I'll have to read those a few times to grasp.

Because of your anemia, you may not be making sufficient antibodies.  I hope they did a total IgA as well as the tTg IgA, and DGP IgG.  I hope you will share the results with us.  If your body isn't making a large amount of antibodies, then the intestinal damage would be less as well.  The antibodies attacking our own cells is what causes the damage. Anemia, diabetes, and thiamine deficiency can cause false negatives on antibody tests.  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies besides the ferritin?  Several vitamins and minerals are needed to correct iron deficiency.  Have you been taking any vitamin supplements? Positive on the genes, I see.  Increases the likelihood...  Good job on ramping up on gluten for the test!

Thanks so much for the link and for your thoughts! I have been on a gluten - containing diet and ramped up my intake in the couple of weeks leading up to the endoscopy, so I’m hopeful that the biopsy is painting an accurate picture.    I don’t quite understand what else might be causing the lymphocytosis and the inflammatory cells/ clusters of plasma cells and struggled to get clarity from the specialist. Perhaps this is common and nothing to be concerned about?!   In case relevant, my mother sister are both celiac, and I have the genes: HLA-DQA1*05:01 = Heterozygous HLA-DQB1*02:01 = Heterozygous Thanks again!

Welcome to the forum, @ellyelly! How much gluten were you eating in the weeks prior to the endoscopy?  Many people with indeterminate results had cut down or eliminated gluten from their diet beforehand.  This can lower the autoimmune response and decrease the symptoms (lower antibody levels,  reduced inflammation and intestinal damage may heal).   If you weren't eating a sufficient amount of gluten per day in a minimum of two weeks prior to the endoscopy, you may want to do another gluten challenge with repeat endoscopy. Here's an article that explains, be sure to read the comments.
