Fatigue after accidentally eating gluten

Hi there,

Quick question I wanted to ask...

I find there’s lots of things out there for people with Coeliac in regards to info but finding forums with sufferers too is pretty hard.

I just wanted to ask if anyone else suffered the same symptoms as I do?

recently I accidentally ate some wheat (absolute nemesis!) I can handle tiny bits of barely but wheat ruins me.

We hadn’t realised this meal contained gluten until after I’d eaten it and I swelled up like a balloon. I was at a point thinking “okay I can’t bloat anymore unless I pop” being fully Coeliac it’s very rare now that I accidentally eat anything with gluten in and wheat has been a very long time. I seemed to suffer so much worse than I ever remembered.

6 days on and the bloating has gone but I’m left exhausted. Does anyone else get this severe tiredness days later?

just wondering if it’s normal?

Thank you :)

Hi!

Everyone’s normal is different.  For me the reaction can last for weeks.  Besides bloating, it hurts to digest anything — whether it is gluten free or not.  So, I consume soups and stews for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  I can become lactose intolerant again and that really makes me 😡.  Fatigue?  Yes, my body is on the attack.  No wonder there is fatigue.  Worse thing?  My last gluten exposure triggered autoimmune hives and a new Diagnosis of Chronic Autoimmune Gastritis which was found after I had a repeat endoscopy.  By the time the procedure was done (almost a year later, my small intestine had healed but not my stomach.  So, I developed ANOTHER autoimmune disorder (also have Hashimoto’s).

I hope your recovery is faster.  Take it easy and avoid gluten at all costs.  Even if you do not react the same with barley, you can still be doing damage.

My last cc incident I had the rash flare for 7 weeks. Unfortunately always lasts longer than I would like. My orthostatic intolerance also gets triggered by gluten cc and a variety of other triggers that extends the fatigue cycle. So for me fatigue and lightheadedness can last for quite some time as both get triggered.

I must stay hydrated and usually find acupuncture helpful. I must listen to my body to keep the symptoms manageable. As cycling lady says it a food flares us or we have sub par digestion we go real basic.

Good luck

@Rogol72, dermatitis herpetiformis occurs in a minority of celiac patients and if the OP hasn't developed it yet I doubt it will show up in the future. I think it unwise to use a scare tactic that probably won't materialize in the OP's experience. It has a good chance of backfiring and having the opposite effect.

Hi @trents, You're correct. The OP mentioned fatigue and vitamin deficiencies as the only symptoms at the time of diagnosis. Since the family are not taking him/her seriously and find them to be too fussy, I suggested showing them pictures of dermatitis herpetiformis as one of the consequences of not taking the gluten-free diet seriously ... would make life easier for him/her, and the family might begin to take his/her strict gluten-free diet more seriously. A picture says a thousand words and the shock factor of dermatitis herpetiformis blisters might have the desired effect. The OP did say ... "How do you deal with people close to you who just refuse to understand? Are there any resources anyone could recommend for families that are short and easy to read?".  @sillyyak52, It might also help mentioning to your family that Coeliac Disease is genetic and runs in families. Any one of them could develop it in the future if they have the HLA DQ 2.5 gene. Here's a Mayo Clinic study calling for screening of family members of Coeliacs ... https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mayo-clinic-minute-celiac-disease-screening-for-family-members/ https://newsnetwork.mayoclinic.org/discussion/mayo-clinic-study-calls-for-screening-of-family-members-of-celiac-disease-patients/ I got glutened a few months ago because I missed the may contains statement on a tub of red pesto. It was my own fault but it happens.

Oh yes.  I would never recommend taking it for an extended period of time.  When 70% of my body was covered in blistering itchy sores, an amazing doctor prescribed it diagnostically because I was unwilling to do a gluten challenge after already going strictly gluten-free in desperation after 10 years of suffering and being poo pooed by dermatologist after dermatologist. The fact that it stopped the itch and mostly cleared the rash after about 2 months was diagnostic for him.  I stopped it and have remained strictly gluten-free with very few flares since that time (over 10 years ago).  So the fact that it cleared the rash was diagnostic for me.
