Hernia mesh and autoimmune disease

Jim Rockford

Jim Rockford Rookie

I need to have a hernia repair with mesh. Researching hernia mesh and autoimmune disease brings up some concerns (real and imagined).

This material can lead to autoinflammatory/autoimmunity syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA). Plus a foreign body response or type of rejection.

I am trying to minimize autoimmune related risks by research and consulting multiple physicians.
Only one physician I have contacted acknowledged possible  concerns about autoimmune issues. This doctor favors a hybrid mesh comprised of biological and synthetic materials.

All the other physicians I have consulted use polypropylene. There is little choice as to the material used, as polypropylene is the “gold standard”. The mesh used is based primarily on cost and profit considerations.

Any input from fellow celiacs with hernia mesh experience and reactions would be greatly appreciated!

Not much advice to offer, but I would check the FDA Medical Device MDR (adverse events) website for the mesh manufacturer  your doctor uses (whichever doctor you choose).  There was some scandal last year or the year before about this database being hidden.  As a result many doctors and dentists did not have all the lastest information about product safety.    Research well.  Hubby is in the medical device industry and he has noted that while  there is FDA oversight for new products, multigenerational devices have little.

Jim, your old trailer at Paradise Cove is gone (I assume the rent became too high), but the restaurant is still there!  Makes for a nice day trip!

I was undiagnosed for quite a few years. I now have neuropathy in my hands and feet. Be watchful of something like this and definitely see a neurologist if having symptoms like numbness in your extremities.

Hello, @jadeceoliacuk, Has your son been tested for nutritional deficiencies?  Celiac Disease causes malabsorption of essential nutrients which can result in nutritional deficiencies.  Supplementing with essential vitamins and minerals is beneficial.   I would find a nutritionist more knowledgeable about Celiac and ASD, before taking herbal supplements that don't contain essential vitamins.
