hi - ive been gluten free roughly 4 months now - i do not eat out and have been very strict with my diet - i’ve improved in my health already so much - my flank pain disappeared my headaches gone my joint pain  almost completely gone - i even notice my nails growing healthy which in all my life could never do - i’m thinking i’m absorbing the vitamins i take and in my food better now - so my only issue is even though i’m lactose free gluten free - i still feel little stabby pains in my mid belly on occasion - like today yet i haven’t eaten anything contaminated - could this be because i’m healing still or a hunger pain ??  it concerns me but i have no other symptoms with it and it’s not regular

It could be because you are still healing, the average time for a full recovery from celiac disease is two years. It could also be a contamination issue, so you may want to re-check your diet, including meds, supplements, etc. Do you eat out? This would be a very common source of contamination. i don’t eat out / everything i eat is gluten free - lactose free - i find that when i’m hungry or haven’t eaten i feel them more - for the most part i’m ok - today for example i didn’t get a chance to eat until lunch time and i felt that stabby pain - i also think the acid reducer i started to take again bothers me on an empty stomach - i hadn’t taken it in several days and was fine

Scott Adams Grand Master

How long have you been taking the acid reducer? In general they are over-prescribed, and can cause other health issues when taken long-term, like mineral deficiencies.

i’ve been on them since jan - they don’t normally bother me but i find if i take on an empty stomach they do - i also had broccoli last night steamed - i’m wondering if it’s too hard to digest and causing this uncomfortable feeling ?  my doc says i should only take the acid reducer this one last time and then off

Scott Adams Grand Master

Broccoli is well known to cause gas in some people.

i’m assuming it’s hard to digest and maybe hurt my stomach - other than these few little sharp pains on occasion i’m feeling so good - i just hate to feel like i took 2 steps forward and 5 back!

You might want to try a good pro/pre biotic, this one is good, however it doesn't say "gluten-free" on the label, but there are no gluten ingredients:

Well, that's interesting. I am lactose intolerant and have been managing that for years. I'd be interested in seeing if that changes once I feel better from not eating gluten (one thing at a time for now, though). Helpful to hear about the avenin. I will do some digging and pose that to the dietitian. Grateful for your feedback.

Recently my daughter ate in nandos harlow I rang in advance to speak about the celiac protocals and learned that childs portion chicken nandinos is cooked on the same grill as garlic bread even if they are celiac! Even if you clean it this is not good practise and will be making many children ill. I learnt adults butterfly chicken cooked on a grill purely for chicken.  This is fine and what we ordered however nandos need to take note of your practises for the safety of celiac children. my daughter has been ill from their nandinos chicken before and i emailed head office and they wouldnt accept responsibility

I agree with @RMJ, you have multiple positive tests so celiac disease is likely.  This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease.

One small study found that 50% of celiacs react to the dairy protein "casein" like they do to gluten. It is also common for celiacs to be lactose (the sugar in milk) intolerant, though that often disappears in time as the villi heal. About 10% of celiacs react to the oat protein "avenin" like they do gluten.

Thank you so much Trents (Scott?)! I have started working with a dietitian and did a deep research dive as soon as I got the diagnosis. I am aware of what you mentioned in the first two paragraphs, and was not aware of anything in the third, so I am grateful for that information, and will talk to the dietitian about that. I think I was most interested in the withdrawal process - it gives me hope that, although I have felt unwell recently, I just need to be patient (not a strong suit). I have printed the article you sent and will look at it more closely. Thanks again!
