Gut Biome, etc.

I've requested a book from my local library and was wondering if anyone has read it. It's called This is Your Brain on Food by Uma Naidoo, M.D. She works with Mass General's Nutritional Psychiatry area. I was like, "nutritional psychiatry"? I guess it's a relatively new specialty. She talks about gut biome dysfunction and gluten being huge drivers of mental health issues. Personally I have struggled over the years with bipolar depression and I find this very interesting.

I've not heard about this book, but it does sound interesting. Gut biome research and treatments around it are a huge focus of current medical research and new medications that may help treat a variety of disease, including celiac disease. It also interesting that this is now a specialty field in psychology. I think that is great, as my experience with how gluten sensitivity can cause major psychiatric issues in many people has always made me think that this should be a bigger focus in psychology.

Apparently your gut has a separate "brain" from your head. So it's impossible to out think gut level anxiety. It would be cool to see more research on the subject.

AmericanaMama,

See this thread.....

I just replied to....it has some interesting things that mentions some things about your Gut Biome / Mind Axis that you might find interesting.

I am not following the forum on a daily basis anymore....so I didn't know you had started this thread on the topic.

Here is one of the research articles it mentions

Entitled "Gut microbiota-derived vitamins - underrated powers of a multipotent ally in psychiatric health and disease"

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33428888/

I hope this is is helpful but it is not medical advice.

Thanks @Scott Adams for this information. I also found some options as well. One of them is also offering gluten free seafood menu with alot of options as well: https://pappadeauxmenu.com/

HI, yes I get this reaction if I eat gluten by mistake or if I eat high fodmap foods as well.  I become nauseous, vomit then it hits the muscles, my legs sometimes give out.  It takes a while to feel "normal" again.

The first step would be to re-examine your diet to see if hidden gluten is the cause. Eating out would be the number one source of contamination, even if restaurants offer gluten-free menus and options.

You may want to see al allergist and run a standard food allergy panel to see if wheat allergy could contribute to this, but again, the most likely culprit if you have celiac disease would be gluten contamination.

Any specific tests you would recommend to check for other allergens or issues ?
