Newbie question re recurrence in older guy

Hi folks, just getting the idea that gluten/celiac my be my issue.

Was told i was a “celiac baby” by adopted parents, but then ‘grew out of it’, i think by about age 4 or so. This was in the late 50’s, so bot sure what diagnosis was done, and no family to ask.

Am now in mid 60s, and feel like i may be experiencing celiac symptoms…. bloating, mild constipation, gut pain, brain fog, tingling/numbness in hands and feet.

So my question is, if original diagnosis was accurate, what are the chances that an older guy would be more susceptible to celiac… or gluten sensitivities?

A couple of white bread sandwiches got my belly pretty hard today( and thinking back too), and a lightbulb went off!

Thanx heaps !

Sorry… forgot to add…. Have been experiencing brain fog, anxiety and a couple others off and on for a few years, but had been attributing to a long ago , and sometimes protracted, benzodiazepine withdrawal. The symptoms are much in line here. tia.

You don't "grow out of it" with celiac disease once it manifests itself, regardless of how old you are when that happens. All the symptoms you describe are common with celiac disease. The next step is to get tested. The first level of testing is a blood draw sent to a lab to detect antibodies that are associated with celiac disease. The second level of testing is an endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel. But if the antibodies are strongly positive it may not be necessary to go any further, especially if you are symptomatic. You should not attempt to start eating gluten free if you intend to go for testing.

if you did actually have celiac from birth and continued eating gluten daily to 60 years old then that can be dangerous and lead to developing refractory celiac from so many decades of untreated celiac...

You should get a 100% diagnosis soon..  then stay away from gluten.

Just get the blood test...  its should be pretty conclusive.

But you don't mention weight loss as a symptom.

You could also just develop celiac at an old age.. any age

Thanks so much for replying!  No I haven't been limiting gluten prior to this test, I didn't know the Dr even tested for it until I got my results. These were the only celiac related pathology that was tested for. I am seeing my Dr on Monday so hopefully she can shed some more light!

New here as well lots of things learning I’ve discovered lots of foods have sneaky gluten so be mindful how is it going?? I have issues when I do cocktails 🍸 I don’t know if it is gluten free or not but get horrible side effects and so many others ooh well we are all learning how to cope with this….

Thanks a lot! I will search that too. I also talked to another doctor and she assured me there is no gluten in this type of antibiotics. Anyway i started the administration of Augmentin on my girl this evening. I hope there will be no problems.

Good afternoon, I don’t know if anyone here has ever tried Braswell’s products like their marmalades or jellies? Are they gluten-free? On the ingredients says “cane sugar, cherries (cherries, cane sugar), strawberries, corn syrup, pectin and citric acid. That ingredient list is from their berry preserve bottle. Most of them say the same for ingredients, but I’m not sure if it is okay to consume.

I have seen this problem many times. I always get in touch with the company. Most times they tell me if I'm just gluten free it is ok, but do not eat it if you are celiac. Calling the company is the best way when you are not sure. Yesterday I had a different example of products being marked gluten-free.  I love chocolate and have a piece each day. The chocolate bar I like is Chocolove. When I bought one this week it was not marked gluten-free. I called the company to find out why and if it was still gluten-free.  Turns out the manufacturer decided there was too much on the wrapper and took off the gluten-free label. It is made in a dedicated gluten-free facility.
