Airborne Flour - MOD Pizza

Hello,

I went into a MOD pizza with a mask on in order to pickup a salad for my wife. However, I began feeling slightly funky while I was in the restaurant and I’m feeling very poor two days later. Is it possible that this MOD visit is the cause  of me feeling so poorly?

I seriously doubt there would be airborne gluten, but even if there were having a covid-safe mask on should have filtered it out. Can I assume that you did not eat anything there? If not, my guess would be that it is coincidental, and perhaps you just have a normal bug, or ate something else that was contaminated or had an ingredient in it that you may also have an issue with.

Hi Scott,

I appreciate the reply. I did not eat anything from MOD. I have heard that airborne flour from bakeries and pizzerias can potentially be dangerous to celiacs. Is that not always the case?

In the many years this forum has been around we have had people who have worked in bakeries get diagnosed with celiac disease, and they've shared mixed experiences. Some seem to be affected by being exposed to airborne gluten, especially those with dermatitis herpetiformis, which is the skin manifestation of the disease, while others haven't had issues. There is a mix of stories here as well where some super sensitive people claim that walking into a bakery triggers a reaction, while others have no issues. I can't say for sure that it did not trigger an issue with you, but if it did you would definitely be in the super sensitive category, especially because you had a mask on during your visit, so it's unclear how you would have been exposed to gluten...perhaps on your skin? Did you notice any flour dust particles in the air?

Hi Scott, I appreciate the info. I did not knowingly see any flour dust particles in the air.

As I mentioned, gluten intolerance encompasses more than just those with celiac disease, and in the past was used more like the term "gluten sensitivity" is used today.

By the way, have you been diagnosed with celiac disease, and if so, are you on a 100% gluten-free diet?

I haven’t had any noticeable reactions to salt so I will continue using it. I think I just freaked out when I realized this but it doesn’t cause me any discomfort- so thanks!

Ok, thanks. I'm so glad to hear you are in the hands of a dermatologist. I hope he/she has given you 1) a diagnosis; and 2) a plan of care with a couple of options so that you have buy-in and comfort with it. I have some ideas, but not having seen the abscesses or you in person, it doesn't really make sense for me to kind of ... speculate further. But your question was regarding gluten, and you've gotten a couple of other follow up questions and answers that are good, including the idea to keep a food diary. Let us know if we can help further or answer any other questions. I'm sorry you're going through this, it sounds very painful.

@plumbago They appear as boils. They are big, like the size of a nickel--quarter, and they hurt when I touch them. I have gone to the same derm for them over and over and she thinks my body is colonized by a bacteria, but even after using hibiclens all over my body they come back.
