Genetic Testing Positive

I did the genetic testing 3 years ago and since it came back that I was positive for two copies of the HLA-DQ2 gene, I decided to eliminate gluten. I also began the AIP diet at that time because I have Hashimotos Thyroiditis. Constipation and anxiety have been the primary symptoms before going gluten free. I also experienced some inflammatory skin issues (excema) but they may have been more related to flares from Hashimotos. I now also have arthritis flares, occasional migraines and terrible insomnia. I have to admit I felt much better on AIP (Autoimmune Protocol).
Right now I’m going on the gluten challenge so I can do the Celiac Screening. It’s only been a few days and I’m not terribly miserable. So far I’ve noticed more bloating and mild diarrhea in the morning. I’ve also noticed the itching has begun.  I realize my symptoms could get worse but I can live with this at the moment. If anyone has some words of wisdom to share, I’m all ears.

Welcome to the board. The severity of symptoms can vary in us with a gluten challenge. So far things don't sound too very intolerable. Should they become severe do keep your doctor advised as to what is going on. This vital if you are on meds as severe diarrhea can impact the absorbtion of your meds.

It might be a good idea to take a Stress vitamin. Personally I use Nature Made as they are safe and not real expensive but there are other good gluten-free brands. I think I recall a member posting that magnesium can be helpful with sleep. It also might not hurt to get a sublingual 12. Damage to gut can keep as from absorbing a tablet that is swallowed.  If your rash gets severe you may want to have a derm test to be sure it isn't DH, the skin form of celiac. They would biopsy the area near lesions not on them. DH is usually also bilateral.  If you have DH you have celiac and no other diagnostic testing is needed.

I hope you get some clear answers from the challenge. It sounds like your body is already telling you that it doesn't want gluten

Thank you for your reply. I will definitely start taking some Stress vitamins and/or B12. I have been taking supplemental Magnesium for a while but just this week I started using a topical Magnesium spray at bedtime that has really helped my sleep. I probably need to cut back on the sugar. The Holidays ramped up my sugar addiction, especially after finding all the gluten free treats I could make myself. Also, I started taking a good Probiotic.

I love popcorn but it doesn't love me.  Right now my gut hurts and I am bloated and passing gas.  Am I just super sensitive. I thought popcorn was gluten free 🤔

Welcome to the forum, @marinke! "Type 1a diabetes (DM1) is associated with an increased risk of celiac disease (celiac disease) (1)." from: https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/35/10/2083/38503/IgA-Anti-transglutaminase-Autoantibodies-at-Type-1 "The prevalence of celiac disease (celiac disease) in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is 5.1%, and it is often asymptomatic (1)." from: https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/48/2/e13/157637/Diagnostic-Outcomes-of-Elevated-Transglutaminase So, this is 5x the rate found in the general population.

Hi James47, You are less than 2 years into your recovery from Celiacs.  Tell us more about the problems you are having. Do you just want to get rid of belly fat or are you still having symptoms like gas and bloating.    For symptoms you may need to change your diet and take various supplements that you cannot adsorb from the foods you eat because of the damage caused by the autoimmune reaction in your small intestine.

My daughter (4 years old) has type 1 diabetes since she was 1. Therefore, every year a screening is done. We live in the Netherlands. Every year the screening was fine. This year here ttg is positive, 14, >7 is positive. IGA was in range. Could the diabetes cause this positive result? Or the fact that she was sick the weeks before the brood test?

@DayaInTheSun what were the shortness of breath symptoms for you ? And did they come on all of a sudden or was it a gradual increase in said symptoms?
