Can i eat eggs or corn as alternatives

So my reports came yesterday and I diagnosed with celiac disease . I am so confused over my diet . I want to know if i can eat egg or corn or diary products in my diet !!

Welcome to the forum, Joven!

So let's start with basics since I don't know how much you know about celiac disease.

First, celiac disease is not a food allergy. It is an autoimmune disease that triggers damaging inflammation in the small bowel when foods containing gluten are eaten. The cells that line your small bowel are called "villi". When the gluten reaches your small bowel the body wrongly detects it as an invader and sends defender cells to attack the gluten as it begins to enter the villi. This causes inflammation that damages the villi. Over time they get worn down. This may cause pain and distress, nausea and/or diarrhea but also results in nutrient deficiencies over time since the villi are constitute the chief nutrient absorbing organ of the body. These nutrient deficiencies can cause a host of other medical conditions over time.

What is gluten? Gluten is a protein found in wheat, barley and rye. The proteins found in corn, eggs and dairy are similar enough to gluten to cause celiac-like reactions in some people with celiac disease. Other celiacs are not bothered by these other foods at all. So, no one can answer the question you raise for you specifically. You have to determine if other foods besides wheat, barley, and rye cause you problems by your own experience. And it may include other foods besides corn, eggs and dairy but these ones you have mentioned are common ones. Celiac disease represents dysfunction in a certain immune system pathway that modulates reactions to what you eat. That dysfunction can result in reactions to other foods besides those three grains that contain gluten and it is typical for those with celiac disease to develop other food intolerances over time.

Oats is another food that some celiacs commonly react to in addition to wheat, barley and rye. Dairy, corn, eggs, soy and wheat are all common things that some celiacs react to in a similar fashion to gluten.

I'll add to your excellent comments that as they are routinely grown, processed and packaged, most oats actually do end up with gluten in them, which makes them extra dangerous (unless certified gluten-free). But, yes, unfortunately, some things that don't even contain gluten can be problematic.

      I was wrong, however, about there being no particular health concerns associated with high total IGA: https://www.inspire.com/resources/chronic-disease/understanding-high-iga-levels-causes-impacts/ So maybe the physician's "borderline" remark is relevant to that.

      Sometimes that is the case but what is curious to me is the remark by your physician about being "borderline". I assume he was referring to the total IGA score but it just seems like an irrelevant remark when it is on the high side rather than being deficient.

      Hi,  I’ve noticed that it usually takes me about 5-6 days to recover from a glutening. I was just thinking and maybe I’m going crazy. Long story but I wasn’t able to brush my teeth for a couple days after being glutened. Is there a way the gluten could be like stuck in my teeth still and still causing some sort of reaction because I waited too long to brush? Or is that insane

      @Gluten is bad Hi!  I just caught this post, and am writing on the off-chance that you might be based in the UK.  If so, I was told some years ago by a pharmacist that in the UK that if a medicine has a Product Licence printed on the packaging, which will appear as the letters PL plus a long number.... for example....  PL 4525908 (making that number up!) it will be gluten free.   I have just checked this on an NHS website, and indeed it appears to be true.  According to the same website, all medications prescribed by GPs in the UK are gluten free. https://www.nhsinform.scot/healthy-living/food-and-nutrition/special-diets/gluten-free-diet/#medicines The same NHS website also makes a very good point.  You might take a gluten-free medication prescribed by a GP that might set off symptoms very similar to a glutening.  Like some meds cause stomach pain or diarrhea, but that doesn't mean they contain gluten. Obviously, if you are purchasing medication from overseas, the above might not apply. Hope this is helpful, and that you can get your medication soon - I have an acquaintance who has had to wait some time. Cristiana

      I wonder if the tTG-Iga result isn't back yet as there is nothing next to that one, perhaps it takes a little longer.
