So a warning to all celiacs and the gluten sensitive

So I wanted to post and warn everyone, since social media my post and the company ignored me.  I discovered that Hersheys Chocolate Company has been lying to celiacs, the gluten free and those with allergies.  I first discovered it with their brookside dark chocolate pomegranate bites.  I was eating them to help with cravings, as part of a new dietary plan to decrease sugar and eliminate dairy, in order to help with the SIBO I found out I am badly suffering from.  I kept getting sick and going through things I ate and I checked to chocolates several times, but couldn't find the culprit.  Fast forward a couple weeks and I became so sick that it triggered some erratic bleeding I have been having, caused cold sweats and intermittent hot flashes, dry heaving and severe vomiting, diarrhea and I literally almost lost consciousness!  It was literally one final serving of them, plus half a Hersheys chocolate bar with almonds.  Once again I scoured the internet and found out that the statement on their website about the brookside chocolates alone was vastly different than the statement on their bags and I am sure it is the same for their other chocolates, as well.  I  took photos of the different statements and will post them below.

I also wanted to note that I tried some of the Hersheys heath mini bars, also labeled with the same type of gluten and allergen free statement as on the brookside chocolate bag and became sick from those as well.  I am certain it was a gluten reaction, as it was one that included symptoms I only have when glutened.

We still aren't sure.  I have had erratic bleeding for a while and the doctors haven't been able to find anything conclusive, so it has been a rather puzzling mystery to say the least.  We know there is something and we know it causes bleeding, but around here, unless it is textbook the doctors have no clue.😩

Parsley, red leaf lettuce, spinach. The RDA is minimum 120 micrograms (10 grams fresh parsley) with no upper limit set.

Low levels of vitamin K can raise the risk of uncontrolled bleeding.

I have a quick question, do you have issues with histamine ?

Chocolate is an histamine liberator so it may trigger something if you're sensitive. This intolerance often coexist with gluten intolerance/celiac disease.

I had a very bad case of violent histamine intolerance the other day and they can resolutely mimic gluten intolerance too.

I cannot eat Hershey's chocolate anymore. I'm gluten intolerant and the last few years, I would get a reaction to Hershey's. They started using a lot of junky chemicals to save money. I can eat Lily's chocolate which is sugar free. I am also grain free.

I myself got bleeding when I tried to start eating grains again other than wheat. I have a grass allergy. All grains are grasses. I stay off grains and have no bleeding problems

That makes sense. Refined sugar in those resolutely damage the guts. The less refined forms are usually easier to digest...A lot of ingredients seems dubious too now that I look at the package...

My wife can eat fewer things each year, but Hershey's products are still OK, even though they're never labeled gluten free. Of course, the sugar takes its toll, but that's a whole other thing or two.

She doesn't eat brookside chocolate, mind you.

(Still new to this site so sorry if this formatting is weird or something…)

I was wondering about these (I have celiac as well)! For the last two days, I’ve eaten them and gotten sick. Not as sick as I’ve gotten with gluten before, but sick for sure. I’ve narrowed it down to the brookside chocolates, and was wondering if anyone else had symptoms because I was confused about the gluten-free statement. Thank you for this post.

Before anything, I would suggest that some of you get tested for histamine intolerance too (if you can, keep notes of what you eat) it can be a digestive problem tied to celiac and even non-celiac. Sometimes.

And chocolate will definitely trigger something to people that are sensitive to histamine. Neurological, digestive and it also affects the blood flow too

Some deficiency in vitamins caused by gluten intolerance can, in turn, slow down histamine "digestion" (it's not the right word but I wouldn't know how to describe it otherwise) and that will cause a lot of other problems.

      It will not undo all of the healing.  If it did, diagnosis of celiac disease would be much easier!  To have enough damage to see on an endoscopy requires several weeks of gluten ingestion.

      HI, I am new to this and am still in 'repair' mode, which I know will take time. But I'm wondering if anyone knows what happens if you ingest gluten after you have made a lot of progress in repairing your villi. Does anyone know if you just have a short-term issue?       Hydrolyzed wheat is wheat protein that has been broken down into smaller components through a chemical or enzymatic process called hydrolysis. This ingredient can be found in various products, including cosmetics, personal care items, and some food products. For people with celiac disease, hydrolyzed wheat is generally not safe to consume because it still contains gluten proteins, even in its broken-down form. Though hydrolysis reduces the size of these proteins, it doesn’t fully remove the components that trigger an autoimmune response in people with celiac disease. In food products, hydrolyzed wheat protein still poses a risk and should be avoided. With regard to the McDonald's French fries, the total amount of hydrolyzed wheat in the flavoring is small, and the amount that ends up in an order of fries is even smaller, and likely below 20ppm. McDonald’s states that the fries are gluten-free by ingredient and free from cross-contact with gluten-containing foods in their dedicated fryers. Third-party tests and statements by McDonald's confirm gluten levels are below the FDA threshold for gluten-free labeling (20 parts per million or less). So, while McDonald’s USA fries may be gluten-free based on testing, some people with celiac disease still approach them cautiously due to the past concerns and individual sensitivities.

      Here is an excerpt from this article: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC82695:   Studies have shown that various peptidases of fungal, plant, animal, or bacterial origin are able to hydrolyze gluten into harmless peptides. According to SDS‐PAGE pattern, proteolytic enzymes hydrolyze gliadins (Heredia‐Sandoval et al., 2016; Scherf et al., 2018; Socha et al., 2019; Wei et al., 2018, 2020). Bacterial peptidase (Krishnareddy & Green, 2017), fungal peptidase (Koning et al., 2005), and prolyl endopeptidases (PEPs) (Amador et al., 2019; Janssen et al., 2015; Kerpes et al., 2016; Mamo & Assefa, 2018) thoroughly degrade gliadin fractions to decrease gluten concentration and influence celiac disease. Aspergillus niger derived PEP (AN‐PEP) were assessed in clinical cases for their impact on modifying immune responses to gluten in celiac patients (Lähdeaho et al., 2014). Guerdrum and Bamforth (2012) reported that PEP addition in brewing technology decreased the prolamin and all of the identified immunopathogenic gluten epitopes in beer production (Akeroyd et al., 2016). On the contrary, many of the recent investigations which employed enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), mass spectrometry, and Western blot analysis reported that PEP did not thoroughly destroy the whole gluten proteins (Allred et al., 2017; Colgrave et al., 2017; Fiedler et al., 2018; Panda et al., 2015), which indicates that beers treated with PEP are not safe for celiac disease patients. Anecdotally, this excerpt supports what we hear from the celiac community on this forum with regard to "gluten free" hydrolyzed wheat products and that is that some still react to them while many don't.

      There aren't good studies that have been done on celiac disease remission, and I'm going from a distant memory of an older post here, but the longest remission that Dr. Stefano Guandalini from the University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center has witnessed was ~10 years, then the symptoms of celiac disease and the damage came back. The real issue though, is that you still could increase your risk of various related diseases and disorders by eating gluten, but again, celiac disease remission has not been studies enough to know what health risks you might face.
