Beyond Meat

Hey all,

So I've been vegan for about 10 years, and gluten free for a little bit longer. I do not know if I have celiac's disease or non-celiac's gluten sensitivity. I saw a kinda quack-y naturopath when I was in college who told me to stop eating gluten and it changed my life (I later learned he tells everyone that lol).

The past couple years I have been having an issue where I get all hot and sweaty at night and can't sleep. This happens when I have gluten as well and has made me super paranoid about cross contamination. I've finally figured out that this happens when I have Beyond Meat (which sucks cause I love the stuff). I think I might have the same issue with Impossible Meat but I'll need to do more experimenting.

I'm wondering if anyone else has issues with Beyond Meat or thoughts on what it might be related to.

My diet is getting super restricted...I have also cut out nuts and am careful about tomatoes.

Thanks!

Are you still eating oats?

I know that Beyond Meat is gluten-free, and the main ingredients is pea protein, which is a legume. The only allergen warning I see on their sits is this one, is it possible you have an allergy?

*Peas are legumes. People with severe allergies to legumes like peanuts should be cautious when introducing pea protein into their diet because of the possibility of a pea allergy. Contains no peanuts or tree nuts.

Very rarely. If I do, I get Bob's Red Mill gluten-free Oats.

Hmm... I do have an issue with nuts. When I was in college they pressured me into getting onto the meal plan despite my resistance and then served me a lot of gluten, since then I get constipated if I eat too many. I'm sensitive to everything lol.

Also, coconut makes my mouth itchy. I'm not sure if coconut oil is an issue though? I didn't realize beyond meat has coconut oil in, thanks for posting that ingredients link. I'll have to experiment.

Reaction to oats can be caused by the oat protein itself, not an CC with gluten.

Sounds like a hormonal issue. Does Beyond Meat have soy? I don’t have any research handy, but in researching hormonal issues through the years, I read many times to avoid soy.

My functional med doc has me on elimination diet to try to help the autoimmune issues. No soy, dairy, corn and of corse gluten to start.

Beyond Meat does not have soy. I don't seem to have any issues with soy from what I can tell. One of the few meals I know I can eat without triggering this has tofu in it.

Gotcha. I haven't had oats in a few weeks and am still having this issue.

I guess using "GF" instead of "PL" would have been too easy! 😉

I was wrong, however, about there being no particular health concerns associated with high total IGA: https://www.inspire.com/resources/chronic-disease/understanding-high-iga-levels-causes-impacts/ So maybe the physician's "borderline" remark is relevant to that.
    • trents
Sometimes that is the case but what is curious to me is the remark by your physician about being "borderline". I assume he was referring to the total IGA score but it just seems like an irrelevant remark when it is on the high side rather than being deficient.

Hi,  I’ve noticed that it usually takes me about 5-6 days to recover from a glutening. I was just thinking and maybe I’m going crazy. Long story but I wasn’t able to brush my teeth for a couple days after being glutened. Is there a way the gluten could be like stuck in my teeth still and still causing some sort of reaction because I waited too long to brush? Or is that insane

@Gluten is bad Hi!  I just caught this post, and am writing on the off-chance that you might be based in the UK.  If so, I was told some years ago by a pharmacist that in the UK that if a medicine has a Product Licence printed on the packaging, which will appear as the letters PL plus a long number.... for example....  PL 4525908 (making that number up!) it will be gluten free.   I have just checked this on an NHS website, and indeed it appears to be true.  According to the same website, all medications prescribed by GPs in the UK are gluten free. https://www.nhsinform.scot/healthy-living/food-and-nutrition/special-diets/gluten-free-diet/#medicines The same NHS website also makes a very good point.  You might take a gluten-free medication prescribed by a GP that might set off symptoms very similar to a glutening.  Like some meds cause stomach pain or diarrhea, but that doesn't mean they contain gluten. Obviously, if you are purchasing medication from overseas, the above might not apply. Hope this is helpful, and that you can get your medication soon - I have an acquaintance who has had to wait some time. Cristiana
