Confusions about Specific Carbohydrate diet

I am so confused. Some sources say to eliminate Bananas, Nightshades like tomatoes, and Oxalates like spinach. But the cookbooks I am looking at include those foods.

How do I decide what is right for me? Do I just attempt trial and error? I also have Osteoporis which is not a surprise for a person my age (70+).

Welcome to the forum, Grandma Mary!

Every food known to humanity has been implicated in some kind of dietary danger. The key is to experiment and find out what YOU need to avoid. What makes problems for YOU. If you take all of that stuff too seriously you will starve to death.

That is what I am leaning towards, doing challenges on those foods that may or may not be OK. FYI- Love your fish symbol.

I am already have some improvement only 1 week into the SCD diet.

The SCD used to be fairly popular among celiacs with ongoing symptoms, but I haven't heard it mentioned here in a while. Where did you hear about the SCD?

Here is an older article on it:

Yes. Indeed. Wise advice.

I use my symptoms to guide me. Even though, I have been gluten-free for awhile my system can get riled up. Recently, I got some new prescription glasses, a Nickel allergy has arrived (likely had it longer, but I couldn't figure it out, and off Dr's radar. Despite it being contact dermatitis episode, it ramped up my innate immune system. So even now 3 weeks later with new plastic glasses my body is still trigger hypersensitive has a lower tolerance/threshold  to my overall allergens. So if I start getting too much histamine response from outdoors/environmental/foods  I have to do more self care and listen to the body.

I know your frustration. Hope you feel better soon.

Thank you! This is helpful and validating, which is nice.  I am so tired of gastrointestinal issues and feeling poorly. Obviously my immune system is freaking out and seeing gluten as a foreign invader… and I feel like I’m just trying to doctor myself all the time but I did wonder if it was all indicative of pre celiac or something like that.  I haven’t gotten straightened out mentally or physically since the 8 week gluten challenge. My stomach is a mess and I’m over it

Hi! Thank you, this is the most validating information I have had shared with me. I wondered if all this was indicative of pre-celiac or just celiac that hasn’t caused damage. It’s been a long road with all this and I am burnt out on dealing with it all. And I am beyond tired of gastrointestinal issues and feeling poorly. I have had major improvements on a gluten free diet in the past and the antibodies decrease as well. Around the area where I live they don’t diagnose celiac without a positive biopsy. I asked my doc why I would have antibodies if it’s not celiac and he didn’t really have an Answer for that, which was frustrating. They only test for 2 genes, the most common I think. Aren’t there more than just 2?

Thank you for your replies. I requested my endoscopy results from May 2024 to see if this was the same. In that report, it states everything is normal. So my thinking is no celiacs. My GP recently told me he thinks I have IBS. Is it a concern that I had the lymphocytosis 5 years ago and then nothing last year? I am concerned my doctors don't make any of this clear, making us all resort to seeking the assistance of a great community such as this. Thanks again

Yes, I only use it when I'm eating outside my home, at restaurants, when traveling, when at a friend's house for meal, etc.

Xanthan gum is added into the the flour mix--1 teaspoon per 2 cups for binding, but some people avoid it because it can cause gastro issues--if you're avoiding it, try 1 tbsp ground flax or chia seeds soaked in 3 tbsp water per cup of flour as a substitute (works well in no-bake recipes).
