Cigarettes have gluten?

New member here, first of all... hello to all!

So, I have been diagnosted as celiac about 5 years ago, I quit smoking before I found out about the disease because I did keep blaming my smoking habit, lifestyle and so on for making me feel sick... anyway, took me a while to have find a diet that does not make me feel sick anymore, I start to finally feel normal and of course I start smoking again. However I did notice since I start smoking that my health declined a little bit again, sometimes nausea, not every day but pretty often, but because I do love smoking too much I kept smoking... in the last month I start to get back my old symptoms, I did have them for 10 years untill I found out that I have celiac so there is something that you never forget that way you feel... feeling nausea all day, head pains, no energy, panic attacks without reason, etc... SO! I start to eliminate things again to find out what cause me a reaction untill I start to roll extra (printer)paper on ciggartes filter and I find out that I feel no more sick, and I tested again with no extra paper again I was feeling sick... now I don't know if is gluten or korn or whatever but there is something in the filter, the glue, the filter itself, I don't know! But there is something. According to my research tabacco industry said that they don't use but you can't trust these companies. Now all the nausea is gone however now I'm back again to where I was when I start smoking again, sometimes I still do get some kind of feeling sick 2-5 minutes after I smoke one... So my guess is there is still something in the ciggaretes that maybe not all celiac but some still get a little reaction, I does goes away after 30 minutes to 1 hour after smoking. Another personal theory is that my body maybe is not fully recovered and obviously my body is telling me to stop doing that(smoking),

Now I will quit smoking for ever, I'm tiered again of feeling sick even for 1 minute, I know they don't make me feel good so why keep doing that...

Does anyone had/has similar experience? My ciggaretes are L&M Red(Europe). I did read some of the posts here and most people are fine as smokers.

It is certainly possible that they could use gluten in the cigarette brand you use. Have you tried switching to another totally different brand, perhaps one from the USA or somewhere else? Unfortunately the tobacco industry is very secret about their ingredients, and as far as I know they do not need to disclose them.

Of course you should also re-check your diet to make sure gluten isn't getting into it, for example, if you eat in restaurants this is a common source of contamination.

I visit restaurants maybe a few times a year and I'm very carefully with what I eat. I'm 100% sure that my diet is clean, no changes in my usual diet, also I tested without eating nothing and only smoking, I still get nausea. I also did notice that they smell and taste different while smoking in the last 2-3 months so my guess is that they changed something in the recipe of production, for my understanding they do this all the time.

No I didn't tried to switch to another brand and I don't plan to try... it's time to quit. I know when I get glutened, the stomach pain, the nausea without vomiting, the heart starting to beat fast, the feel of going fast to bathroom, anxiety, no energy, just overall feeling sick and irritated which ruin the entire day and the next 2-3 days but smoking only cause me a little bit of nausea which goes away pretty fast.

Any chance of Covid?

All of the symptoms I was told would improve if I stop smoking finally did when I started GFD.

If its physical contact with the filter paper, try a cigarette holder.😊image.png.7653431fe92d42c961a4bd1f1fad29d8.png

No Covid for sure.

Yes I know about the holders, I use them when I was a 12 years old when I start smoking to avoid being caught by my parents 😀 then I quit when I was about 27 years old because I blame the fact that I'm a heavy smoker for all the symptoms for celiac disease then I start smoking again at 29-30 years old and now I'm 32.

To give a little bit of history I start to experience celiac disease symtomps at age of 3 or 4, just constipation untill about 14-15 years old when I start to have low energy, feeling tiered all the time, depressed, panic attacks, I even droped school because I was so tiered and exausted then at 20 years old I start to have also constant head pains, memory problems, stomach pain, muscle twitching, pale skin and I was like this untill 27 when I was diagnosticated. I did all the health test for everything you can think, all came back normal, doctors use to keep telling me that is everything in my head that there is nothing wrong with me, my friends always use to tell me that I'm looking sick, pale skin all the time. Thanks to the internet, personally I did a list with all my symtomps and after 100 of hours of reading forums and articles online I did fit perfectly for celiac disease, I was tested and finally I found out what was wrong with my health after years of suffering, quit gluten, I eat only a few fruits in 3 days and the 4 days when I woke up my head pains was almost gone for the first time in 10 years, the heart rate dropped almost to normal, it was the first time in 10 years when I did see an improvement in my health condition because everything was getting worse and worse every year.

I do live in Romania, here everything is behind, we as society are way behind compared to other coutries and doctors here are well... behind, for every sypmtop that I had they gave me pills but I refused to take any of them because I know that there is something else wrong...

@itarachiu, Welcome to the forum!

I have a problem with nightshades, a group of plants that contains glycoalkaloids that can cause inflammation and promote autoimmune responses.   Whether I eat them or smoke tobacco, nightshades cause symptoms like you describe.  I've had to cut out all nightshades from my diet and quit smoking.  Like @Wheatwacked said, quitting smoking is easier if strictly gluten free.

Tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and peppers (chili peppers, green peppers, paprika, etc.) as well as tobacco are nightshades.

Here's an article about the effects of nightshades...

https://centerforintegrativehealth.com/blogs/all-you-need-to-know-about-nightshade-sensitivity

Hope this helps!

@knitty kitty, thank you!

I know about nightshades and I avoid them, I ocasionally eat tomatoes and potatoes(french fries) and seems I don't get anything from them, eggplant maybe a few times a year, however tobacco maybe because I do it daily(smoking) I guess the sensitivity is there. I know tobacco is a a nightshade but I assumed because you don't eat it and you smoke it there there will be no problem.

To quit smoking probably is the best solution also it is the only bad habbit left in my lifestyle that can cause harm.

Just an update, I quit smoking exactly 19 days ago, almost 3 weeks, I'm doing fine, got the Covid for the first time and I had fever almost 40 degrees, felt very sick for the first few days and I took advantage of that so I quit smoking.

What I can 100% tell you is my IBS is gone... GONE, I still experience nausea which was the reason why I created this post however is much less and is tolerable.

Anyway my conclusion is this... there is something in the filter of the cigarettes for sure that cause mini reaction because I could feel how my IBS was getting worse even after 1 puff, like 30 seconds later after 1 puff and nausea without vomiting, however my last month of being a smoker I did smoke covering the filter with printer paper and my IBS and nausea was better but still there as I mentioned in my previous posts above. It may also be a connection with the fact that tobacco plant is from the nightshade familly, however I do eat sometimes french fries and tomatoes(cooked or raw) and I'm doing fine, even eggplant salad in small amounts, however eggplant if I cross the line it does make me feel sick.

I also tried another brands, I took one from my friends, some of them they also have some sweet taste on the filter... probably corn syrup which of course made me feel even worse, maybe electronic cig are safer but I prefer to be a non smoker, I tried 10 years ago the e-cig and I did go back the regular cigaretes after a few months.

I hope I will stay a non smoker, it was something that I use to like doing it... every smoker when starts smoking enjoys this habbit, I did it for the first maybe 10-15 years but in my last years I knew I had to quit, I knew they do hurt me but because you are addicted to nicotine you keep smoking.

So yeah, smoking cause me to feel even more sick as a celiac, maybe my body is deficient in something that helps the immune system to fight the toxic environment inside your body that you create while you smoking, maybe it is because tobacco plant is a nightshade itself... I don't know...

Welcome to the forum, dlaino!

You don't say but may we assume your son is not gluten free? Not sure what his smoking habit has to do with your question. Could you elaborate?

It's doubtful that smoking would spread any gluten to others, but it's not healthy for others to breathe in 2nd hand smoke, so hopefully he doesn't smoke inside around non-smokers. Even if cigarettes have tiny amounts of gluten in them, which is unknown at this point, it's doubtful that him touching them and then touching something else would create any issues.

      Well, that's interesting. I am lactose intolerant and have been managing that for years. I'd be interested in seeing if that changes once I feel better from not eating gluten (one thing at a time for now, though). Helpful to hear about the avenin. I will do some digging and pose that to the dietitian. Grateful for your feedback.

      Recently my daughter ate in nandos harlow I rang in advance to speak about the celiac protocals and learned that childs portion chicken nandinos is cooked on the same grill as garlic bread even if they are celiac! Even if you clean it this is not good practise and will be making many children ill. I learnt adults butterfly chicken cooked on a grill purely for chicken.  This is fine and what we ordered however nandos need to take note of your practises for the safety of celiac children. my daughter has been ill from their nandinos chicken before and i emailed head office and they wouldnt accept responsibility

      I agree with @RMJ, you have multiple positive tests so celiac disease is likely.  This article might be helpful. It breaks down each type of test, and what a positive results means in terms of the probability that you might have celiac disease.

      One small study found that 50% of celiacs react to the dairy protein "casein" like they do to gluten. It is also common for celiacs to be lactose (the sugar in milk) intolerant, though that often disappears in time as the villi heal. About 10% of celiacs react to the oat protein "avenin" like they do gluten.

      Thank you so much Trents (Scott?)! I have started working with a dietitian and did a deep research dive as soon as I got the diagnosis. I am aware of what you mentioned in the first two paragraphs, and was not aware of anything in the third, so I am grateful for that information, and will talk to the dietitian about that. I think I was most interested in the withdrawal process - it gives me hope that, although I have felt unwell recently, I just need to be patient (not a strong suit). I have printed the article you sent and will look at it more closely. Thanks again!
