Symptoms after eating gluten

Hi! 

I'm relatively new to celiac disease, and I still don't know how I react to gluten. I do eat gluten free, but I do eat out sometimes and I guess it is always a chance of having traces of gluten in gluten free foods at restaurants. I think one of my reactions could be itching on my face. Smetimes Ifeel some itching on the right side of my face, mainly near the jaw. Has anyone experienced this? Do you think it is gluten or something else?

It is certainly possible, and I eat out regularly as well, but I do take GliadinX (they are an advertiser here, but don't pay me to post about the product), which is an AN-PEP enzyme that has been shown in multiple studies to break down trace amounts of gluten/gliadin in the stomach, before it reaches your intestines. I used to get issues eating out, but after taking two of these before any meal outside my home, I no longer have any issues.

That said, of course the safest policy would be to never eat out, but for me that's not a possibility.

I'm curious, how does that work for a three course meal in a restaurant spaced over a couple of hours? Is one pill sufficient for three courses?

I would take 3, one right before each course. There seems to be no upper limit with how many you can take at once, within reason of course. I've been traveling and was in a place where they told me to forget about doing anything special with preparing my food (there was nothing else around for many miles), so I took 5 there (everything was cooked on the same large grill, pancakes, grilled sandwiches--right along with the hash browns and eggs I was ordering, etc. I did not have any issues from that meal, other than spending a bit extra money on the pills.

i just got that reaction the other day after being gluten-free for almost 2 years - i ate eggs and had tomatoes which generally never bothered me but i think i’ve grown allergic my face felt tingly and slightly numb by jaw on both sides -

I react to eggs from our chickens if their feed is high proportion of wheat. I have to read the labels of their feed and pick the brand that uses more soy. Similarly I have heard of chicken owners who are allergic to soy avoiding that in the fowl feed to avoid having reactions.

This is very interesting and I wish I could test eggs from wheat-fed chickens with my Nima Sensor. I've heard that eggs are always safe, no matter what they eat, however, I've never seen any actual study or testing that has been done to verify this claim.

I'm newly diagnosed so I'm still figuring out my non-GI symptoms, but I get really itchy on my arms. Like an unbearable itch that only loads of hydrocortisone can help. I also get itchy on my scalp and get sores. I think that's more DH, but I'm not sure. Sometimes my face and jaw get itchy, but for me it's mainly my arms and scalp.

Sounds like DH to me. It's the itch that won't go away, no matter how much you scratch! When I get glutened, I get what I can only describe as random pin pricks anywhere on the skin. Then the scalp becomes itchy first, I guess because it's got a large blood supply ... followed by the forearms and elbows.

Exactly! It won't go away. Before I knew about DH or celiac, I would carry hand sanitizer around and when I got itchy I would pour sanitizer allll over my arms and that would kind of help. Maybe the alcohol in it? I'm sure I smelled lovely lol!

Hi. Sometimes I get itchy tip of my nose. It started last year prior to my celiac diagnose and I was thinking maybe it’s some kind of allergy. I got it last week again,it’s not my whole nose just the tip of my nose. I was at birthday party last week and they had Mexican cuisine, I had rice with meat and I think I got glutened and had that itchy tip of nose again. Also I do have have problems with my feet and toes. Overall I feel much better than last year after my gluten-free diet but still some issues.

For those with neurological issues I recommend taking a multi B-vitamin complex, and Benfotiamine:

Since my diagnosis in my mid-twenties I had ataxia issues in my feet, numbness and tingling, and in the last 5 years higher fasting blood glucose levels, just below the cut off range for diabetes. I always took a B-complex, but it wasn't until I started taking benfotiamine for 6 months or so that both issues went away. I recently did a fasting blood test where my glucose levels were in the normal range for the first time in many years, and I also have no more nerve issues with my feet. I suspect the two were related, and the higher glucose levels facilitated the nerve issues.

Yes, I get itchy when exposed to gluten.  It usually starts with hands, fingers and stomach.  Sometimes legs, face, etc…. Eating out is hard.

i’ve been looking at the labels on the egg boxes but most only say vegetarian fed - nothing about wheat

I know this thread is over a year old, but I'm hoping you're still around. :) I am curious if the itchy tip of the nose you get happens immediately after your suspected glutening? I've been experiencing the same thing, and I'm trying to see if there is a way to pinpoint what the offending food may be (I don't eat outside of my own home, so I'm looking to identify the specific food).

      @GeoPeanut, milk is one of the better sources of iodine. Iodine is known to exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis. Many people find that a low iodine diet helps them avoid dermatitis herpetiformis outbreaks. So, maybe the fact that you have limited your dairy intake of late is helping with that.

      Hi, I'm new here. Sorry for your troubles.herenis a thought to mull over. I recently was diagnosed with celiac disease,  and hashimoto's and dermatitis herpetiformis after getting covid 19. I eat butter, and 1/2 cup of Nancy's yogurt daily. I stopped all other dairy and  dermatitis herpetiformis is gone! I also make grass fed beef bone broth to help with myopathy that has occurred.

      Welcome to the forum, @KRipple! Sorry to hear of all your husband's health problems. I can only imagine how anxious this makes you as when our spouse suffers we hurt right along with them. Can you post the results from the Celiac blood testing for us to look at? We would need the names of the tests run, the numeric results and (this is important) the reference ranges for each test used to establish high/low/negative/positive. Different labs use different rating scales so this is why I ask for this. There aren't industry standards. Has your husband seen any improvement from eliminating gluten from his diet? If your husband had any positive results from his celiac blood antibody testing, this is likely what triggered the consult with a  GI doc for an endoscopy. During the endoscopy, the GI doc will likely biopsy the lining of the small bowel lining to check for the damage caused by celiac disease. This would be for confirmation of the results of the blood tests and is considered the gold standard of celiac disease diagnosis. But here is some difficult information I have for you. If your husband has been gluten free already for months leading up to the endoscopy/biopsy, it will likely invalidate the biopsy and result in a false negative. Starting the gluten free diet now will allow the lining of the small bowel to begin healing and if enough healing takes place before the biopsy happens, there will be no damage to see. How far out is the endoscopy scheduled for? There still may be time for your husband to go back on gluten, what we call a "gluten challenge" to ensure valid test results.

      Ive read articles that there is stage 2 research being conducted for drugs that will limit damage to celiacs through cross contamination- how close are they to this will there be enough funding to create a mainstream drug?

      Hello, My husband has had issues with really bad diarreah for over nine months now. In mid November, he went to the doctor for what they thought was a bad cold, which two weeks later was diagnosed as bronchitis. A week later, in December, I had to take him back to urgent care and from there, to the emergency room cause his vitals were too low. They said he was having an Addisionan crisis and he spent five days in the ICU. Since my husband has Autoimmune Polyendocrine Syndrome Type II (type 1 diabetes, Addison's and Hashimoto's), I fought for a blood test to determine if he had Celiacs. Given the results of the test, he was told to go to a gastro for an endoscopy. It took two months to get his first appointment with the gastro. Still waiting for the endoscopy appointment. He stopped eating gluten in the hospital and has followed a gluten-free diet since. His diarreah continues to be as bad as before he stopped eating gluten. Still has a horrible cough that makes him hack. His energy is so depleted he pretty much goes to work, comes home and goes lie in bed. He is having issues regulating body temperature. He is barely eating (he's lost 20 pounds since mid-December). Body aches. Totally run down. He has been taking more prednisone lately to try to counter the symptoms.  Today, we went to his endo to discuss these things. She said to continue taking increased amount of prednisone (even though I explained that the increased dosage is only allowing him to do the bare minimum). According to the endo, this is all related to Celiacs. I am concerned because I know that both Celiacs and Addison's can have similar symptoms, but don't know if he would still be having these many symptoms (worsening, at that) related to the Celiac's after stopping gluten two months ago. If anyone in this group has a combination of Celiacs and Addison's, could you please share your experience? I am really concerned and am feeling frustrated. His primary care provider and endocrinologist don't seem to consider this serious enough to warrant prompt attention, and we'll see about the gastro.  Thanks.
