Vital Wheat Gluten for glucose challenge

I tried to start a gluten challenge today to see how I would react to vital wheat gluten, eliminating or reducing FODMAPS.  I have a lot of issues with FODMAPS (beans, onion, garlic, many vegetables). My endoscopy is in 5 weeks and as I understand it, I would only need to do the gluten challenge for 2 weeks prior.  I put 1/4 tsp of vital wheat gluten in water, drank it down and now 3 hours later am extremely nauseated, have cramps, bloating, gas and diarrhea.  Only 1/4 tsp!  I may try drinking it at bedtime starting 2 weeks out from procedure day, but I don't want to stay up all night being sick.  When my mother was diagnosed in 1990, she never saw another GI doctor again, nor had any follow-up on it from her PCP.  She was a master at avoiding gluten and lived to age 91.  I think I probably have IBS or something else along with the Celiac because even when I know I was eating clean, I had GI problems.  Until this afternoon, I haven't had a speck of gluten in 3 weeks and still have a few GI symptoms.  How long for all GI symptoms to clear once diet is clean?

I don't envy you in your quest to go through a gluten challenge to get a diagnosis, but you only need to do it for 2 weeks before your endoscopy procedure, and it should be ~2 slices worth of wheat bread.

Given your immediate terrible symptoms, and your family history, do you really need an official diagnosis? To me it sounds like you already have your answer.

Here it is 4 days after my 1/4 tsp of vital wheat gluten and I still have diarrhea multiple times a day.  I have decided to go ahead with the endoscopy and colonoscopy but not do a gluten challenge.  In the back of my mind, I know it is possible to have Celiac as well as something else, like UC or Crohn's, so want to rule that out too.  I don't know how it is possible to have this level of diarrhea for months on end.

My first thought is are you sure your diet has been 100% gluten-free? If you eat at restaurants, probably not...

I think the biggest culprit was a cross-contaminated kitchen.  I love to bake and made cookies and cakes with wheat flour for family.  I can't say for sure, but I think that's when the raging diarrhea started.  I thought as long as I don't eat it I would be fine.  I haven't baked anything in about 6 weeks, but the diarrhea continues.  I have been eating in restaurants once a week and hate to stop since it is my only social outlet, but I will.  I can see that I need to give my intestines time to heal without hitting them with cross-contamination every week.

I had similar issues after being diagnosed with celiac. I wasn’t able to take in enough wheat to get a positive result on my blood test, but my symptoms were enough for my doctor to make the diagnosis. One thing I recently discovered and am currently dealing with is SIBO (small intestinal bacteria overgrowth). This is a common problem with Celiacs. I treated mine with oregano oil. I do feel better, but I’m not sure the problem is completely dealt with. You may want to look at it to see if that applies to you.

      Your doctor may or may not be well-informed about the issue you raise so I would not agree that he/she would necessarily be the best person to rely on for a good answer. The question actually raises two issues.  The first issue has to do with cross contamination and individual sensitivity as dublin55 alluded to. Oats and wheat are both cereal grains that are typically grown in the same areas, transported in the same trucks, stored in the same silos and processed on the same equipment. So, there is usually significant CC (Cross Contamination). With gluten free oats, there is some effort to separate these processes that would otherwise cause significant CC and "gluten free" oats should meet the FDA requirement of not exceeding 20 ppm of gluten. But this 22 ppm standard is not strict enough for more sensitive celiacs. "Certified gluten free" oats (and other food products are held to a stricter standard, that being not exceeding 10 ppm. But even that is too much gluten for some super sensitive celiacs and will cause a reaction. The second issue with oats has nothing to do with gluten per se but with the protein found in oats called "avenin". Avenin has a structure similar enough to gluten to cause a reaction in some celiacs. This is called "cross reaction" not to be confused with "cross contamination" discussed in the previous paragraph. So, for whatever reason, whether cross contamination or cross reaction, it is estimated that about 10% of celiacs react to oats.

      Karen, that sounds really tough. You must find both RA management and your new gut problems extremely irritating to handle at once. Together with your pain relief you still experience ongoing bloating complications that drag on without a resolution. Of course visiting a doctor to obtain a proper celiac diagnostic evaluation becomes necessary when no formal diagnosis has been received. Your journey toward recovery has been lengthy yet it brings comfort to notice your progress during this time. This support group offers you valuable help because there are people experiencing the same concerns with you. Working through your issues will be easier.

      Yeah, it’s tricky. I’ve seen a lot of mixed opinions too. Some folks can tolerate certified gluten-free oats without a problem, but others with celiac still react. Honestly, it really depends on your sensitivity. Your doctor would be the best person to ask about your specific situation.

      Hi guys! Can we eat them an can they cause villious atrophy? I saw multiple articles about it an they have very different opinions… so what did your doctor told you? Thanks!

      I can't edit my posts, but I forgot to note as well: I also had low iron and vitamin d according to my blood tests, despite already taking supplements for each
