Can you have a positive blood test, but a negative biopsy - and still be celiac?

Hi everyone :)

Soooooo... I'm super confused.

I had my blood tests done a month ago ish and it came back positive on Transglutaminase-IgA. They even did it twice. Same result. And ofc i ate gluten back then.

Then they did my biopsy about two weeks ago. Right after when I woke up they informed me that they had seen some signs of celiac and that I should go on a glutenfree diet immediately.

Cut to two weeks later - now.

I just got the answer from the biopsy in a letter and now they say it's normal and that I can go back to eating gluten again. (I've chosen not to, until I know what's going on) They will schedule a meeting where they'll probably close my case. I'm super confused.

Especially cause I have so many symptoms as well. I've noticed a pattern when I think I'm glutened.

Tired AF -> bloated and having a hard time breathing -> excessive yawning -> jerks while sleeping -> nauseous -> MAJOR headache waking up next day and super tired -> and ofc constipated.

Have anyone tried anything like this? (Negative biopsy, but still feeling bad. Or similar symptoms)

Hey! I've just put a post on pretty identical to yours!! I'm so fed up!

Had my endoscopy 2 weeks ago and spoke to my GP today who read out my report. Said unlikely coeliac :( I have an appointment with the consultant but not until 11 January!!

If its not coeliac then what is it!!!!

@Jojo7 your situation is unusual, and it would be a great question to ask your gastroenterologist. Why would they tell you it looks like celiac disease as you were recovering from your biopsy, then change this on the report? I can't think of any reason at all.

If your tTG blood test result was positive, then you likely have celiac disease--especially if your gastro told you this right after your biopsy, which they did!

I think you should just go gluten-free and see if your symptoms improve, and assume you have celiac disease.

Yes I forgot it is the green leafy. I just don't take drugs well. It wasn't just the inr but was also getting nose bleeds. Right now I have to figure out what I am going to do with the mri as discussed with rmj on this page and see how my weight goes. Need to get some info together before my next cardio visit so I can deal with a doc who claims celiac and not aspirin is the problem.

I was taking the non biological of folate  and b12. Have since started methyl forms. Looking forward to some healing.

I have been on Coumadin for years because I have a genetic blood clotting disorder known as Factor 5 Leiden. I think it's mainly green leafy veggies that you have to worry about. They are the ones high in vitamin K. And if your are consistent in your consumption of them it your INR should level out. I get my INR checked every 6 weeks. Certain medications can mess with INR too, like antibiotics so occasionally I have to go in more often or INR checks.

I was on coumadin for a while after surgery and had a lot of trouble with vitamin k which pretty much curtailed how many veggies I could eat. The constant testing for vitamin k was expensive and a nuisance. I plan to ask doc if nsaid can be taken every other day instead of daily.

Thanks rmj. I should have taken the mri already but I do not take the tunnel well. I thought I would wait to see how the blood test goes. I am also feeling a little bit better about regaining 5 pounds over the last few weeks stalling out at 149 for last several days. The assistant to doc told me today that she would look into an open mri but if I continue to gain weight and other thing gets better then I see no reason to do mri, at least for now. If I could just cut out refined sugar- dream on.
