Update: (can’t edit my posts on my phone for some reason) anyhow started eating and that’s when things started going downhill. Feeling tired and had low blood pressure. So far I’ve eaten:

eggs, more coffee (this time with sugar and cream), avocado, an apple (shortly after this is when things began to go downhill), also hat oats and Greek yogurt

Update: So felt good overall today except for that brief dizzy spell earlier after I ate the apple. Continues without any vitamins or supplements and felt quite incredible at times while feeling a bit bad at others. Very strange. I can only guess but I did eat some beer lover today (a natural multivitamin) so maybe that helped me. Face still red but not as bad as yesterday. Will continue tomorrow without supplier or vitamins to see if the good feeling continues

Update: Very exciting time today. First off, I was up drinking coffee till 1:30am this morning and got up to go to work at 5:30am and felt AMAZING all day!

slight drowsiness but nothing crazy, and overall I have this feeling of improving health. I also noticed some increased strength.

SO my theory is that my intestines may FINALLY be healing but also that perhaps those vitamins were doing more harm than good. No other explanation 🏧

The reaction after the apple makes me think of food allergies. Have you been evaluated for allergies? It's even possible to be allergic to wheat, which immunologically isn't the same as being gluten intolerant, though treatment for both involves avoiding wheat.

For carbs (thinking of your original post) have you thought of gluten free pasta? Pasta dishes can be quite rich in calories, but maybe not as healthy as what you normally have.

With food allergies, some people tolerate what they are allergic to if it's  cooked. So people may react to raw apples but not necessarily to apple pie.

I’ve never been tested for allergies but I seem to react negatively to almost everything. These brief moments of feeling amazing are anomalous tho.

for carbs I tried rice pasta before but not a fan. Nothing makes me feel as good as bread or pizza it’s weird

Thanks I’ll have to try. I’m just dying here and I’m eating so much food it’s ridiculous. Has anyone tried those pills I see advertised on here that supposedly destroy the gluten in your stomach?

Update: Interesting occurrences today.

I had my normal breakfast (Sweet potatoes, Black Beans, Beef, Eggs, Coffee) also took a Fenugreek supplement.

everything was normal and I was feeling like sh!t.

at lunch I had to get fast food. I got a burger (wrapped in lettuce so no bun). It had: Beef patty, Tomato, Mayo, ketchup, mustard, bacon, cheese. Also had fries and coffee with it.

began to feel much better and stronger throughout the afternoon.

so my thinking as of now is that my normal food is making me ill in some way so I’m gonna try and eat more like the fast food (healthy grocery store options) and see how I feel. I just have no ideas but the facts are facts and despite what “should be”, my body is obviously telling me what it prefers.

Update: Felt REALLY good today. Didn’t use any supplements, vitamins, nor coffee.

breakfast: Sweet potatoes, black beans, grass fed beef (is this the X factor?)

snacks throughout day: 3 gluten free sandwiches with coconut oil, peanut butter, and whey protein

Lunch: Mars bar, Sweet potatoes, black beans, grass fed beef.

so yeah, interesting day. I’m noticing I didn’t eat eggs today like normal and the beef was grass fed unlike normal so maybe those two changes contributed.

Update: Felt amazing today. Like my mind was waking up beyond Simple survival

I went to my grandmas for Easter and had food there I don’t normally have so I assume that may be part of it.

I ate marshmallow ambrosia fruit cup salad thingy (don’t know the real name), tomatoes, Turkey, cashews, popcorn, peppermint and cranberries

Could it be eggs you're sensitive to?

It could be but I didn’t have eggs today either and generally felt like all the food I was eating literally did nothing for me.

in fact, I was gonna make a post about that. Here’s the deal: it feels like I’m eating food and I get no effect whatsoever. I still feel hungry and I don’t feel energy or anything. It’s like I haven’t eaten at all yet I chow down big meals sometimes. Today I ate all the “good” foods: potatoes, pork, coconut oil, cottage cheese, sauerkraut, black beans, coffee, butter, cream, kefir, arugula, probiotics, potato chips, peanut butter and gluten free bread

SargeMaximus Collaborator

Update: Felt like absolute garbage today. Woke up with no energy. Felt like I was gonna fall asleep at the wheel driving into work. No energy at work. Ate all my food I packed for lunch on my first break. Bought fast food (lettuce wrapped burger, fries and coffee) for lunch which seemed to help a little. Slowly got better throughout the day. I think sugar is the only thing propping up my energy at this point. Almost like my body doesn’t get energy from normal food. Except bread definitely gives me energy like I’ve mentioned before but I’m nearly 2 months without gluten now. Feel like I’m dying some days like today.

SargeMaximus Collaborator

Update: more of the same. Eating super healthy is such bs because obviously it isn’t helping.
I’ve started eating a Mara bar at work. I don’t know what else to do. It’s not healthy but I’m sure I will die if I don’t find a way to get energy.

here’s what I ate today minus the mars bar, I just want to show y’all how much food and how healthy I am eating:

Breakfast: Black beans, Sweet potatoes, pork loin, coconut oil, Milk and whey protein with half a cup coffee to drink.

linch: white potatoes, black beans, pork loin, coconut oil

Snack throughout day: 3 (yes, 3) gluten free sandwiches that have peanut butter, coconut oil, and whey protein powder on them. My food tracker says it’s 600 calories and 30g protein EACH!

so yeah, don’t know how I’m always tired and drained for energy. I eat nothing but “healthy” food and the only way I ever have energy is if I eat sugar or bread like back in the old days (pizza was a super good for me) so yeah, fight me, but my body is not responding to this “healthy” crap

update: No changes. Gonna try and take dairy out of my diet. Soon I’ll have a grand total of like 5 foods I can actually eat

For the lovers of peanuts and caramel, Snickers are thankfully gluten-free. Snickers are manufactured by Mars but please note that Mars Bars are not gluten-free

Update: Been taking Glycine and Vitamin B Complex and today felt SO tired and brain fog I was astounded and worried. My physical strength and stamina for my job was uncompromised tho so that was an interesting divergence.

Hi guys, hope you’re all doing well.

I’m 34 and am starting to feel like I can’t eat anything. Tried giving up gluten but I need carbs. I weigh 155lbs and am 6 feet tall. I don’t do anything but sit around and eat as much as I can but it seems like it’s never enough. Something doesn’t add up there. I eat really healthy (beef/pork, coconut oil, olive oil, oatmeal, beans, Greek yogurt, pineapple juice).

problem is, too much oatmeal and I get hella constipated. Also I’m worried I will end up getting too much potassium what with all the beans and oatmeal.

any tips? I’ve never been diagnosed for celiac but I got off gluten years ago and I felt great so I’m assuming that is the answer. Problem is I’m always hungry now and oatmeal is giving me constipation so I need a better carb. I also want to avoid rice if at all possible. Thanks for the help :)

Thanks for posting, I make great chicken, just chicken legs and wrap each piece in a strip of bacon and bake also add salt and pepper, no cooking skill needed. 350 for about 45 minutes I do not know what that might be on oven temp if you are in the UK, It would be the same as  the oven temp to bake a cake. Also there are gluten-free rice based cake mixes, too bad are you irritated by rice? Hope the chicken wrapped in bacon helps.

Chicken is JUST chicken, there is no soy in a chicken leg or bacon. Best to you, I was not talking "nuggets".

They feed chicken soy meal

And they feed cows wheat, yet it does not result in gluten in the cow's meat. Neither does feeding soy meal to chickens result in soy compounds in the chicken meat. That is a misconception. "You are what you eat" but you you don't turn into what you eat.

Yea but chicken fed soy will be more estrogenic than chicken that is not

With patients who are experiencing ear ringing and ear pain I first want to make sure there is not any kind of ear infective process verified by your primary care. The next thing that I see as a dentist who treats a lot of temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ), is that the jaw joint can be having a problem that causes the ringing to happen. My primary care physicians here in Colorado Springs will refer these patients to me for evaluation when they don’t find any source of infection with the ear. We are able to treat with a specific type of mouth splint and get resolution of the ringing and ear pain as we resolve the TMJ problem.  First a visit to your primary care to make sure your inner and outer ear is infection free. And if it is clean, a visit to a dentist who treats TMJ disorders.

One thing I ought to add is that although any new medical condition diagnosis can come as a huge shock/blow, navigating the gluten free diet will one day become second nature to you all  Yes, mistakes occur on the way, but it will get easier.  A few things that have helped me on my journey: 1/ My husband has said to me a few times, and I think it helps. I should to try think of all the food I CAN still eat.  So much natural, unprocessed food, is gluten free, and a whole lot of processed and canned goods available in the supermarkets, too.  I can still eat Heinz Baked Beans and Tomato Soup, for example, and a lot of oven chips are gluten free.  Not all chocolate and candy contains gluten.  Excellent gluten free substitutes now exist in the supermarkets and I've lost count of the times I've been eating a product and shared it with a friend, and they have loved it.  Gluten-free doesn't mean taste free.  A lot of gluten-free substitutes are just as good as the 'real thing'. 2/ As time has gone by, I have met more and more coeliacs and other people who react strongly to gluten. This will happen to your son in time, and it often helps to be able to chat with someone who walks a similar path.  I now have over a dozen such buddies and we share tips and recipes, and also recommend 'safe' restaurants and cafes to each other.   3/ Family support.  It is good if you can offer a safe haven at home.  My family aren't coeliacs, but the only things they eat that are not gluten free is shop bought bread and pies, and occasionally biscuits and we keep them very separate.  The rest of the time we cook with gluten free substitutes and all eat the same.  I have always been a keen cake baker and my daughter who is not a coeliac actually prefers the crumbly texture of gluten free flour, so she always uses that, even outside the home.  You can spend lots of time cooking and baking with your son, he'll acquire a new skill, and without wishing to boast, if his cakes are as good as mine he will never be short of friends!!  My daughter has quite a following at Uni, and I don't think they realise that her cakes are even gluten-free! I hope some of this serves to encourage you. Cristiana

@Kathleen JJ  I am based in the UK.  The following link is to a website for UK based consumers but even post-Brexit, we are still importing from and exporting to mainland Europe, so chances are some of the products mentioned in the link are from the same factory.  Therefore, what your son eats would likely be the same product that I eat when it comes to eating sweets. https://libereat.com/2021/07/gluten-free-sweets/#:~:text=Haribo Gold Bears are gluten,Starmix It would therefore appear that Haribo Gold Bears are the ones you need to buy for your son. In answer to your other questions - yes, European labelling is strict so "Gluten free" is trustable.  However, if I read "Residual gluten" on a label I would say that is not safe for coeliacs. But always check the ingredients lists first as ingredients do change over time.  When doing this, what you need to avoid (usually printed in bold in the ingredient list) are: Wheat, barley and rye. These grains all naturally contain gluten. Coeliacs must also avoid products which state, "May contain traces of wheat, barley and rye" or products where the statement occurs: "Made in a factory which also handles wheat, barley and rye"    However, one other thing to think about:  oats.  In the UK, we do produce quite a few cakes and some candy which contains oats.    Oats do not naturally contain gluten, but as the crops are often grown alongside wheat, barley and rye, or processed in the same plants, cross-contamination can occur and they pick up gluten 'en route'.   The good news is that some food producers now grow oats away from these crops, and process them in oat dedicated plants, so you end up with a product called "pure oats" which are suitable for the majority of coeliacs (a minority react to avenin, the oat protein, in the same way they would to gluten, but I won't go into that here - just making you aware in case down the line you think it could be a problem).   So increasingly, in the UK at least, manufacturers are now printing oats in bold.   In candy production, you might find vegan chocolate which contains oat milk, hence I mention it here.  Unless such a candy bar stated that it was suitable for coeliacs,  your son would have to avoid it.   Incidentally, I think the idea of having a party after your holiday is a very wonderful, positive start to your son's gluten-free diet journey.  I was symptomatic by the time I was finally diagnosed with Coeliac Disease and was quite keen to start the diet straight away.  But just a few days after my endoscopy I was due to visit Normandy.  My consultant said to me, "Don't bother about taking up the diet until you get back".   I did try to start it in France but back then French catering establishments didn't seem to appreciate coeliac customers (something my gastroenterologist seemed to know something about!) so I was so glad he told me not to worry until I came home!
    • Kathleen JJ
@cristiana Do you have any suggestions for the gummy bear type of candy? Because that is what is getting passed around. Someone told me "you will have to read all labels thoroughly from now on" but to be honest: I don't know what I'm looking for that should or should not be there? And is the notion "gluten free" trustable? And what about "may contain residual gluten"? Is that safe?
