Well, I went to my husbands family for Christmas dinner and they made a meal that had barley in it. We didn’t know until after I had finished it so I ate a lot :( anyone has gone through this and has a positive thing to say? I am extremely terrified and worried I really don’t want to miss this baby it is our rainbow baby. I can’t even begin to explain how upset we are. We checked multiple times :( . Please help .

Welcome to the forum, Erika.ON!

Not sure what you are referring to when you say "we checked multiple times". The baby or the in laws' food?

"anyone has gone through this and has a positive thing to say?" Are you looking for commentary on the effect this "glutening experience" may have had on the baby you are carrying or how to handle the the situation with our in laws?

Hi, I meant with them and then food to make sure it was gluten-free. And they only realized it wasn’t three hours after I had eaten it :( .

Consider creating an information sheet and giving it to them. Just sounds like they need a little education and coaching as to what gluten is and where it is found. You might also check with the cook beforehand when family gathering plans are being made to go over the menu with him/her and ingredient lists. It needs to be handled graciously so that they don't put up walls.

Honest mistakes are sometimes made. At least your in laws are making an effort to accommodate your dietary needs it sounds like. They just need help in understanding the nuances of preparing gluten free food. Your experience highlights one of the more challenging aspects of celiac disease and that is the dangers of eating outside your own home where you don't have total control of food preparation. We all face this.

Barley is 8% gluten. Wheat is 85% gluten. With luck you may not be activated yet against the gluten in barley. Or your natural stomach acid neutralized the small amount and your vitamin D is high enough to dampen the response of the Celiac genes.

Similar proteins to the gliadin found in wheat exist as secalin in rye, hordein in barley, and avenins in oats and are collectively referred to as “gluten.”  ...The most immunodominant T-cell epitope is from α gliadin, although T-cell cross-reactivity against gluten-derived, secalin-derived, and hordein-derived peptides have been confirmed...The gluten found in all of these grains has been identified as the component capable of triggering the immune-mediated disorder, coeliac disease. What is gluten?

Oh thank you so much!! Yes I haven’t felt sick thank goodness 🙏🏻. And I ate a smaller amount than I thought too because it was only present on one of the dishes . Thank you for that info I didn’t know it and really appreciate it .

I’m sorry this happened! I’ve heard a lot of stories about pregnant women who didn’t know they had celiac and ate gluten the whole time and the baby was fine. The baby is protected inside it’s little sac so good chance everything is okay :)

Chronic mildly elevated liver enzymes was what eventually led to my celiac diagnosis but it took thirteen years to ferret that out and by that time I had developed osteopenia.  Yes, you've got a lot going on there in the way of autoimmune disorders and all of them we now know have a connection with celiac disease. It is true that autoimmune disorders tend to cluster. But it sounds like you are getting medical attention and keeping an eye on things.

Thank you! Yes, I have celiac disease, lupus and Sjögrens. My ALT and AST have been chronically slightly elevated for a couple years and recently had an acute kidney injury (thinking it was from an antibiotic) with increased Lipase. So my primary doctor referred me to a kidney specialist. Other kidney labs are normal.

My test results for TissueTransglutaminase IgA Antibody test came back normal. Like spot on normal. I do not have celiac! My problems are stemming from this H Pylori infection. I think I’ve had it for years. We’ll see if the doctor wants to do an endoscopy to see how extensive the damage is. Otherwise just a regimen of antibiotics will do the trick. The thanks for your guys’s help!

Thank you both so much for taking the time to reply.    Cristiana - yes the rashes seemed to resolve when he came off gluten too. I haven’t seen those pictures before, thanks for pointing me to them. I’d say his rash isn’t like the more severe photos which are scabbed and very bumpy. His rash is more like lots and lots of patches of eczema than spots. No we have no celiac in the family to my knowledge, though my mum and sister both have autoimmune diseases and wheat sensitivity. I think you’re right and I’ll have to do another trial to confirm if it was the wheat. I’ve been hoping all day that I come down with the bug to rule out the wheat reaction! But the rest of the family are absolutely fine.    Trents - thank you for the info regarding the genes. That’s very interesting and I’d definitely consider doing that as a way to rule it out without putting him back on wheat. I also didn’t know celiacs were commonly intolerant to dairy and soy. I think you’re right and there is definitely enough factors to show something is going on. I think I’ll do a repeat trial of the wheat challenge and if he reacts again I shall look into the genetic testing.    Thank you both so much for your time. Becky

Welcome to the forum, @Lburnett! Have you been officially diagnosed with celiac disease? I'm just trying to get a handle on the health context from which your question comes.
