Rash

This rash is new. My chest, my back. My hairline. What triggered it? I want to know why it started so i can stop it from  coming back, if it ever goes away.  Im using lidocaine pain patches for the itch and they work but i want it to go away. Any thoughts?

Welcome to the forum Sally. Could you please add some background information. Like are you diagnosed with Celiac, when did the rash start? Has it been seen by doctors?

Sally Walker Newbie

I have celiac disease, the rash started about a month ago but its worse now, and i have not shown it to a doctor.

Is your diet 100% gluten-free? Do you eat in restaurants?

Dapsone?

Before I go to the doctor I want to see what I can find in my prescription and vitamins that is causing it and if I can't do any detective work then I'll go to the doctor

I'm very careful to be 100% gluten-free because I know what it does to me. But maybe something has slipped in that I don't know about

@Sally Walker,

Welcome to the forum!

I get DH rash if I'm exposed to iodine in foods like crustaceans and seafood, and nori (seaweed). Even dairy has high levels of iodine.  I use Pink Himalayan Salt, because I react to sea salt and iodized salt.

Check your vitamins labels to see if they have added iodide components.  Some prescription medications can contain iodide, too.

I've found that taking Niacin in the form of nicotinic acid (not the same as nicotine in tobacco) that causes flushing helps my skin recover faster.

Hope this helps!

Someone in another thread just recommended U-Lactin Lotion for DH, which is the first time I've heard about it.

night shade veggies can also cause inflammation and rashes - read up on them - i had a reaction from tomatoes a few months ago that gave me a flare up of eczema on my eyes for a week

Are any of your prescriptions sulfa drugs?

Sally Walker Newbie

I called the manufacturer about 1. They said no. Ill check on the other one.

@Sally Walker,

That's good to know!

I have Hypersensitivity type four to sulfa drugs and iodide.

@MADMOM is correct about nightshades being inflammatory.

Vitamin B12 and Vitamin C help calm inflammation and clear histamine.  Lots of histamine is produced during flare ups as part of the autoimmune response.  Niacin will help, too.

Talk to your doctor about checking for vitamin and mineral deficiencies as part of proper follow up care for Celiac patients.

Hope this helps!

Hi @Sally Walker, I hope that you are feeling better. A friend of mine started to itch recently from peanut butter. I also tend to itch after eating nuts and gluten-free products containing flour and starches.

      Thank you. I already cut out dairy and eggs because I found out I was having a problem with them. To be honest I’m just getting worn out 😂

      Hi Kitty, thank you for your e mail,  I have seen a nutritionist who seemed to be happy with the food diary I had been keeping and nothing was mentioned about extra vitamins, and I’m still using milk etc . The steroids seem to be working and everything is functioning as it should however,  the course of tablets finish at the end of February and I have an appointment with the consultant early April probably followed by another endoscopy, as far as I’m aware I have not been tested for vitamin B and will definitely discuss it with the doctor on my next visit.

      It might be understandable to say "friends or family weeded me or you out of their lives". Some people are fearful of getting out of their comfortable known lives and having to make changes to accommodate another.   If they are too uncomfortable to walk a mile with me, I shake the dust off my feet and journey on.  They're just not ready to learn that lesson.  But you confidently keep going on your journey.  They can catch up later.

      You might also be sensitive to other things while you are healing. Dairy, for example. It won't harm you from a celiac standpoint but is inflammatory and could be bothering you. Have you been keeping a food & symptom journal? Might be worth it for a week to see if you notice something you are eating prior to the times you feel your worst. I hope you start feeling better soon.

      Someone recently recommended Superfoods for looking up recipes free of allergens or intolerances.  It's a web site but there's also an app.
