Gluten Free Watchdog special 2023 statement on the use of oats in the gluten-free diet

January 4, 2023

"In the latter half of 2022, four labeled gluten-free oat products from three manufacturers commissioned for testing by Gluten Free Watchdog had gluten test results above 20 parts per million. Three of the four products were certified gluten-free at the time of testing. These results are unprecedented for GFWD.

At Gluten Free Watchdog, we are stopping short of recommending against the use of oats. However, you may want to familiarize yourself with the suppliers of purity protocol oats and confirm with manufacturers that their oats are sourced from one of the listed suppliers posted at https://www.glutenfreewatchdog.org/news/oats-produced-under-a-gluten-free-purity-protocol-listing-of-suppliers-and-manufacturers/

You also may want to familiarize yourself with the protocols followed by Quaker

https://www.glutenfreewatchdog.org/news/oats-revisited-quaker-gluten-free-oats/

We will continue to test labeled gluten-free foods containing oats and will update the community as necessary."

Thanks for sharing this. I find it interesting that they don't discuss the biggest gluten-free oat manufacturer in the world, which is General Mills.

Wow, thanks for sharing this! This post was super validating.

I've been glutened by oats so many times, I can't trust them at all any more and I just assume that I'm one of the celiacs who can't tolerate any oats. (Maybe someday I'll grow my own and find out for sure.)

@Wheatwackedcan you elaborate your systems and after how many years of eating gluten you and your family get dignos with celiac,  did you do endoscopy? What was the state of you small intestines or lining, it casued any major damage is long run? In india dr don't even test for celiac as whaet is part of indian food and we have been eating since birth. Hence I don't trust doctors here.

@trents i m just confused as his billirubin is high 1.4 and EVB virus detected. Not sure if that's causing his Igg Iga numbers high or hr has celiac.  This whole process made us stress. Not dr is good enough here to get to the conclusion,  definitely i will consult in india, as here medical is very poor,  only cure is good, diagnosis process is pathetic! They should guide is better way, why his billi is high, why EVB VIRUS test detected positive,  how it's different from being Asian and American genes, eating habits and overall.

That's a shame, but on another tack - if you are coeliac with digestive issues, such as constipation, you may find that as they settle that might help somewhat.  I've just had a quick read online and I see, for example, that constipation can exacerbate IC pain. https://www.healthline.com/health/constipation/interstitial-cystitis-and-constipation I suffer from pelvic pain and any digestive issues can greatly affect that.   It is like the extra pressure aggravates the nerves.

Yes, I have. Unfortunately it did not help me. Thank you for your input.

Hi @mswhis and welcome to the forum!   I don't have IC but have suffered with standard cystitis on and off for years.  I have found D Mannose helpful - have you tried it?   I know that some IC sufferers have said that it has been beneficial to them.
