He discharging me from colorectal Consultant and handing me back to gastrologist.i didn't make that quite clear in above post

Since you have a positive blood test for celiac disease (I believe), you could still have it, or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, which around 10% of people have but there are not tests yet for it. I would try out a gluten-free diet for a few months to see if any of your symptoms go away, and if so, perhaps just stay gluten-free.

Thanx for ur reply.could certain medications raise ttg iga?a nurse said it was possible?would non celiac gluten sensitivity raise ttg iga?the colorectal surgeon said he could see 2 separate areas of inflammation but biopsy said non found?he also said to continue on gluten until told otherwise which I don't know how long til I see gastroenteritis.I don't have much confidence in nhs no more due to previous issues.

Scott Adams Grand Master

tTG tests are very specific for celiac disease, and I doubt your levels would be high due to anything else other than either non-celiac gluten sensitivity or celiac disease. Did they say how long it will take before you get an endoscopy? Normally you need to be eating around 2 slices of wheat bread daily before an endoscopy.

Hi Scott.i had gastroscopy and colonoscopy.the biopsies they took was 2 from stomach and 4 from D2.they came back as showing nothing.not even inflammation that was seen on camera?he said looks like h pylori and bilary gastritis but nothing shown on biopsy.i had coloscopy as had faecal calprotectin level of 775 <50 normal range.the colorectal surgeon took biopsies while doing the colonoscopy.he said in report that he doesn't know why my bloods are showing ttg iga but nothing on biopsy.he said he not expert in that area and handing me back to gastroenteritis and my gp for faecal calprotectin levels??I got to wait now for gastroenteritis which is wks away.the  nurse said it could be medication that's raised my ttg iga?

Scott Adams Grand Master

Did your nurse say that any medications you are currently taking could cause a positive tTG test result? If so, which medication?

Again, the tTG test is very specific for celiac disease, and it is unfortunate that they did not also take biopsies for celiac disease when you did your upper GI.

You may want to discuss with your doctor whether you could go on a gluten-free diet now, but start eating 2 slices of wheat bread daily at least 2 weeks prior to your endoscopy. It's possible that you might see your symptoms go away while gluten-free, and if so, that would be another indicator that you have celiac disease or NCGS.

More info about the diet:

She never said.tried to Google but not coming up with anything about certain  medications. The biopsies that they took before of stomach an D2 sufficient for celiac?my gp not much use.he said wait til I see gastroenteritis as hes not an expert on it.

Scott Adams Grand Master

The biopsies for celiac disease would need to have been done in your duodenum and not your stomach, and only they could answer whether or not they did this, but it sounds like they did not since they mentioned the need to do this.

Many things can cause of a falsely elevated TTG IGA including other autoimmune disease and infection.  Celiac blood tests are good but not perfect, so the assesment of no active celiac at this time is probably accurate.

Scott Adams Grand Master

Actually TTG IGA tests, when done according to protocol, are about 98% accurate at diagnosing celiac disease.

Hey there @knitty kitty! Thanks for checking in. Things are not really going as planned for myself unfortunately. As much as I feel better than I did while eating gluten, I still seem to be reacting to trace amounts of gluten in gluten free foods. I constantly break out in rashes or hives after eating. My dermatitis is constantly flaring up. I take every precaution possible to be as gluten free as I possibly can and have simplified my diet as much as I possibly can but still cant get past this point in my recovery. If this is the case, I believe it would be considered non-responsive Celiac Disease or Refractory Celiac Disease. The only time I have ate gluten purposely in the last year was for the 3 weeks leading up to my endoscopy for diagnosis. Aside from that, the last year has been a constant disappointing effort to be gluten free with the same result of getting stuck at this point. I have a appointment with my doctor next week to discuss some treatment options and what the next steps are in trying to get my body to push past this point.   I will keep you posted!

@Jordan Carlson, How are you doing now?  Your post slipped by, but I had to let you know you weren't alone.  I've had cravings for raw meat my whole life.  It's due to being low or deficient B vitamins, specifically Thiamine.  Meat is a great source of B vitamins.  Cooking meat destroys some of the vitamins, so a craving for raw or rare meat shows up.   Thiamine and Niacin make digestive enzymes that will help you digest fats.  Thiamine will help improve gastroparesis, anxiety, vertigo, and heart palpitations.  Niacin will help Dermatitis Herpetiformis.  I get dermatitis herpetiformis blisters on the palms of my hands, too. Really active people (especially if outdoors in hot weather) need additional Thiamine.  If a high carbohydrate diet is eaten, additional Thiamine is needed, too.  I take Benfotiamine, a form of Thiamine that helps heal the digestive tract.  I also supplement magnesium because Thiamine and magnesium work together.   Hope you can update us on how you're doing.

@RMJ@Scott Adams@knitty kitty, Thank you for all of your responses, tips, and suggestions. I'm very grateful that this website exists. It makes me feel a lot less alone in my celiac journey!  The endocrinologist had me do a neck ultrasound just to be safe. Thankfully, thyroid and lymph nodes came back normal. knitty kitty, my Vitamin D is on the higher end of normal, but I will definitely consider the dentist route next time I have my checkup if I'm still noticing issues. Thank you! Scott, thanks for suggesting the ENT. I may consider seeing one if things don't resolve on their own. I am thankfully feeling a bit better now, so hopefully, this is just some sort of residual celiac inflammation like you mentioned, Scott. After all of the numerous tests and clinical visits I've had all year, I'm going to give my body (and wallet) a break for a few months to rest and heal without the stress of doctor appts/labwork and whatnot. Perhaps the health anxiety is also contributing to some of my symptoms.  Thank you once again for sharing your stories.
