Helped a local farmer to stack bales of hay. Had a nasty reaction. It is a grass, not too distantly related to wheat (I have coeliac disease). Took a couple or weeks to heal up. Anyone else experienced similar?

Do you know what type of grass it was? It seems like it would be more of an allergic reaction than related to celiac disease.

I''l have to ask the farmer. It is probably mat-grass (nardus) or common bent. They are both in the Pooideae sub-family along with cereal grasses. I wonder whether there is some connection. Grasses in general seem to be quite immunogenic.

Some years we have had problems with hay mites. Too small to see, but had us keeping a can of bug spray by the haystack to use before handling hay. It was either wheat or oat hay, don't remember which, but affected the whole family, not just me with celiac.

      I think both systems have merits and faults, but in my opinion no citizen of any country should be denied health care, and it should be a basic human right, no matter your income.

Yes, it has its issues, but after moving from the U.S. a few years ago, it’s been a real eye-opener to see just how much better the NHS is compared to the American healthcare system.       I developed a heart arrhythmia and on several occasions had to wear a 24 hour Holter monitor. Among other things, I had premature atrial complexes (PACs) and occasional AFib. I was very fit at the time, running and cycling. This completely disappeared following my diagnosis and following a strict gluten free diet. I haven't had a single episode since, in 4 years.
