Availability and prices of gluten-free Canyon Bakehouse bread

I've never understood why gluten-free breads like Canyon Bakehouse or Shar, are so small and so expensive. I have found the best gluten-free bread, size and taste, are the Canyon Bakehouse Heritage Honey White and Mountain White bread products. I am assuming that many Celiacs must agree because I am very lucky to find either of these anywhere.

At the grocery stores, I can find plenty of those little bitty size gluten-free breads. Slices not big enough for a regular sandwich and still costing minimum of $6.50 to $7.50 for these pathetic excuses for gluten-free bread. The Heritage costs anywhere from $7.50 to $9.50 and mountain white is also high. However, if I find one loaf in the freezer section, I buy it no matter the cost.

I'm wondering if anyone else is experiencing this frustration with gluten-free breads and if you have any suggestions as to where or how, to get the Canyon House Heritage or Mountain white breads, or, any other bread brands that have decent sized loafs.

THREE BAKERS is equal or better than Canyon Bakehouse or Udi's and slightly cheaper by approximately .50 or more. I used to buy at least 8 loaves/mo. of the 7 Grains when available. Unfortunately, their breads are also small. That's too bad. I have started to wean my family off breads because I cannot afford the high prices, especially with today's food prices. My grandson has Celiac Disease & other serious medical issues ......he has Downs Syndrome, so everything I buy has to be gluten free......very costly.  95% of our meals, I prepare from scratch to avoid gluten.  I'm just glad I'm retired and don't have a job.  It takes a lot of time to prepare all meals from scratch.  I try to make larger meals so we could have leftovers for another meal.  A quick sandwich for lunch once in a while is a blessing.  I also buy only Boar's Head, low sodium, gluten-free lunch meat periodically (when I can afford it).  HOW DID CELIAC'S SURVIVE 2000 YEARS AGO.......maybe because the grains weren't modified?

PS..... I've been following Scott Adams since 1997 when my grandson was diagnosed with Celiac, although I never participated in commenting.  I learned a lot from him.  Before they starting labeling gluten-free, I used a list of ingredients on labels to watch out for....that Scott Adams provided on his site.  THANK YOU, SCOTT ADAMS.

Thank you for your input.  It sounds like you have your hands full and Celiac only adds to the pressure.  I have been using gluten-free 8" tortilla wraps in place of bread when I don't have the gluten-free breads that I like but can't find.  I may try the Three Bakers if I can find it anywhere in central Florida.  Thanks for the tip.

Two packs of Franz GF bread can be found at many Costcos which are under $10 for 2 loaves.

I buy the Canyon Bakehouse in the two-pks at Costco. My favorite thing is that they are NOT frozen, so the texture is more like regular bread. The frozen stuff turns to glue in my mouth. I don'tknow what keeps them fresh, but an open loaf (tightly wrapped) will stay good for at least two weeks. I don't know the price, because I am going to buy it anyway. I'll do without something else.

Carbonaut is made by the same company that makes Little Northern Bakehouse (a sponsor here), and I love all of Little Northern Bakehouse's products, due to their high fiber content.

Never seen either where I live. I'd be satisfied with the Canyon Heritage White if it was readily available at a decent price. The main supermarkets here charge $9.50 when they have it. Walmart charges $7.50 but rarely has it. I'd like to contact Canyon and tell them that their two best breads aren't very available here.

If we only had a Costcos close. We have to drive thru busy Orlando traffic for 40 miles to the nearest one. Dang!!

Perhaps if you have any friends that live near you and go there regularly you could put in a standing order to have them pick up a package for you and pay them back? We've done this before with friends who live near us but don't have a Costco membership.

Good idea, I'll check into that. In the meantime, yesterday, I found "Live Free"  gluten free sandwich bread at Aldi's!! The slices are large and it cost $6.50. Sure beats the $9.29 for a loaf of Canyon Heritage Honey White that I paid earlier in the day at our largest supermarket chain here, Publix. I had a nice size sandwich with the Aldi's brand and it was good!! I love Reuban sandwiches and this bread will work fine. Living gluten free has certainly been a challenge mentally, financially and physically but discoveries like this helps ease the pain!!

I stocked up on gluten-free flour and will be baking my own.  I have a meat slicer that can be used for bread also.  gluten-free products are killing my budget, especially with this insane inflation.  ALSO.....I rarely buy processed foods anymore.  I cook most things from scratch.  I just roasted a pork roast and when it cools, I will slice half of it for sandwiches.

Have you tried using the store finder on Canyon Bakehouse's website?

You can also sign up there to get coupons, which helps a little with the price:h

Publix often carries the bFree brand of breads - which makes some larger sliced breads, wraps, pita bread, panini rolls & my favorite gluten-free white rolls.

Welcome to the forum, @marinke! "Type 1a diabetes (DM1) is associated with an increased risk of celiac disease (celiac disease) (1)." from: https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/35/10/2083/38503/IgA-Anti-transglutaminase-Autoantibodies-at-Type-1 "The prevalence of celiac disease (celiac disease) in children with type 1 diabetes (T1D) is 5.1%, and it is often asymptomatic (1)." from: https://diabetesjournals.org/care/article/48/2/e13/157637/Diagnostic-Outcomes-of-Elevated-Transglutaminase So, this is 5x the rate found in the general population.

Hi James47, You are less than 2 years into your recovery from Celiacs.  Tell us more about the problems you are having. Do you just want to get rid of belly fat or are you still having symptoms like gas and bloating.    For symptoms you may need to change your diet and take various supplements that you cannot adsorb from the foods you eat because of the damage caused by the autoimmune reaction in your small intestine.

My daughter (4 years old) has type 1 diabetes since she was 1. Therefore, every year a screening is done. We live in the Netherlands. Every year the screening was fine. This year here ttg is positive, 14, >7 is positive. IGA was in range. Could the diabetes cause this positive result? Or the fact that she was sick the weeks before the brood test?

@DayaInTheSun what were the shortness of breath symptoms for you ? And did they come on all of a sudden or was it a gradual increase in said symptoms?
    • DayaInTheSun
I had shortness of breath so much so I went to a lung doctor. I told him I get short of breath wirh certain foods, he said “Food doesn’t affect hour breathing.” I told him maybe it was an allergy  he cut me off then said “Food allergies don’t cause shortness of breathe.” I beg to differ as soon as I figured out what foods were causing my shortness of breath it went away. I also never saw him again as he was rude, condescending? And refuse to listen to me kept dismissing my problems as “you’re young.” I cut out Soy, dairy, sesame, eggs, and of course gluten. I stopped being short of breath, going on a two years now. No thanks to the doctor I saw. Figured it out on my own.
