Eosinophilic Esophagitis, non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity

Hello, I'm currently experiencing gas/bloating symptoms and I'm wondering if anyone has suggestions on this.

I've had eosinophilic esophagitis (EoE) since I was a teenager. EoE symptoms include throat tightness when eating. About 15 years ago, an integrative doctor recommended I go gluten/dairy free. After starting the diet, my EoE symptoms improved about 85%. (I think some symptoms are still caused by environmental allergies.) After testing, the doctor said I don't have celiac but I have gluten sensitivity.

My EoE was managed very well for several years up until 3-4 weeks ago. I ate at a restaurant and had gluten free pancakes. That night, I got quite sick (diarrhea). I'm guessing it was the pancakes because nothing else changed in my diet. The diarrhea went away the next day but I experienced lingering gut issues (gas, stomach ache) for several weeks. Then, about 10 days after the pancakes, I was eating my regular diet and food got stuck in my throat (common symptom with EoE). I ended up going to the Emergency Room. After a few hours, the food passed and I went home. To me, all of this meant I had ingested gluten.

Today, I still feel like my stomach is unsettled. I have somewhat of a stomach ache and quite a bit of gas after eating.

For the past week, I've been using a product called Gastro-Ease but I haven't felt any improvement yet. In fact, after last night's meal, gas discomfort increased quite a bit (I ate a meal that included quinoa, which is usually fine).

I don't know if it is normal for healing to take this long or if something else is going on. Any thoughts/recommendations on this?

Hello, @Hiawatha,

This article explores how EOE may be connected to a thiamine insufficiency....

Thank you for sharing this article! Interesting that I have a family history of alcoholism and a craving for sweets. I'm surprised more hasn't been written about the role of sugar with EoE.

I'm scheduled to see an integrative doctor in about six weeks. I will be sure to discuss this article with him.

@Hiawatha,

My family is the same way...😼

Not much information available about sugar and EOE may be because there's a simple solution that doesn't require pharmaceuticals.

      Thank you. I already cut out dairy and eggs because I found out I was having a problem with them. To be honest I’m just getting worn out 😂

      Hi Kitty, thank you for your e mail,  I have seen a nutritionist who seemed to be happy with the food diary I had been keeping and nothing was mentioned about extra vitamins, and I’m still using milk etc . The steroids seem to be working and everything is functioning as it should however,  the course of tablets finish at the end of February and I have an appointment with the consultant early April probably followed by another endoscopy, as far as I’m aware I have not been tested for vitamin B and will definitely discuss it with the doctor on my next visit.

      It might be understandable to say "friends or family weeded me or you out of their lives". Some people are fearful of getting out of their comfortable known lives and having to make changes to accommodate another.   If they are too uncomfortable to walk a mile with me, I shake the dust off my feet and journey on.  They're just not ready to learn that lesson.  But you confidently keep going on your journey.  They can catch up later.

      You might also be sensitive to other things while you are healing. Dairy, for example. It won't harm you from a celiac standpoint but is inflammatory and could be bothering you. Have you been keeping a food & symptom journal? Might be worth it for a week to see if you notice something you are eating prior to the times you feel your worst. I hope you start feeling better soon.

      Someone recently recommended Superfoods for looking up recipes free of allergens or intolerances.  It's a web site but there's also an app.
