An optimistic article from the journal Nature about emerging therapies for autoimmune diseases.

Nature: Can autoimmune diseases be cured? Scientists see hope at last

Quote

After decades of frustration and failed attempts, scientists might finally be on the cusp of developing therapies to restore immune ‘tolerance’ in conditions such as diabetes, lupus and multiple sclerosis.

Not to seem skeptical, but I've seen similar articles published over the past 25 years, including ones that claimed a gluten-free diet might be a thing of the past once a drug got FDA approval. I'm still hopeful, but I'm also getting older! 😉

Thank you for your information. I am just beginning my journey & looking for answers.

With the passage of time after going gluten free, we tend to react more intensely when we do get glutened. We eventually lose all tolerance to it that we may once have had when consuming it regularly.

Welcome to the forum, @mswhis! They may be related in the sense of both are autoimmune disorders and autoimmune disorders tend to cluster. If you have an autoimmune disorder, you are likely to develop others. But I would hesitate to say there is a cause and effect relationship between the two or that gluten could be contributing to your IC. It is certainly possible, however, as we keep adding to the list of known symptoms/medical conditions related to celiac disease which is a list of over 200 symptoms and conditions now.

I remember reading about a passenger who was served the wrong food on a plane and reacted so badly to gluten they ended up having to sue the airline for the medical expenses incurred whilst in the States, where they were hospitalised on arrival.  At the time my reaction to gluten was quite mild, and I couldn't understand how anyone could be that ill, but now I can.  If I have a mild glutening the symptoms are less severe, but that one piece of cake made with normal flour a few years ago was anything but mild.

I have recently been diagnosed with Celiac disease. I also have RA & Interstitial Cystitis.  I have tried many meds & treatments for the cystitis without relief & now wondering if the inflammation in my bladder could be related to my Celiac. I have started a gluten free diet hoping that this may relieve my symptoms.  I’m just getting started in this disease & would appreciate any comments & advice. Q
