Could this be dermatitis herpetiformis? Pending celiac test results.

My son (3.5 y) started developing a rash on both elbows about 6 months ago. Now starting to develop on his knees. See photos.

Awaiting a celiac test but I'm curious if this might be dermatitis herpetiformis, or something different. A reason I think it might not be dermatitis herpetiformis is because they aren't "intensely" itchy. I only see him scratching every once in a while, otherwise they don't bother him.

I did ask the pediatrician and it wasn't helpful

photos:

1. Rashes on elbows started like the photo of his knee. It is now starting on both knees.

2. At their worst

3. at their worst

4. Seemingly healing? Looking scaly similar to psoriasis?

He hasn't had gluten for about 5 days since we sent in his test. I've seen that if it is dermatitis herpetiformis it can take weeks to months to heal but l'm sure everyone is different.

Appreciate feedback!.

Welcome to the forum, @HayleyC123

There is a very short time window for attaching photos. This serves the purpose of thwarting scammers. So, that should probably be the first thing you do instead of entering the text of your message. Open a new post window and try again. You should see a paperclip icon on the lower left corner of the new post window.

dermatitis herpetiformis has a characteristic appearance. There are little blisters or pustules in the center of the rash's bumps.

If you suspect that your son could have DH it might make sense to get him screened for celiac disease, and also consider having a dermatologist do a skin biopsy for DH.

This article might be helpful if you decide to get him screened for celiac disease:

Yes, thank you! We are awaiting results of his celiac test now, but checking in on the rash potentially being dermatitis herpetiformis or something else. I tried posting pics and reposting in general like was suggested above, but I don’t have the option to post photos, only links.
I want to avoid a biopsy because he is 3.5 and already scared of the doctor. Also it takes ages to get into a dermatologist where I live. This was mostly out of curiosity but I guess time will tell with gluten elimination.

I think most of us, when we first got our diagnosis, imagined that going gluten free would be the magic the bullet that would restore us to perfect health. We soon find out that it usually isn't quite that simple and that celiac disease has long fingers.

Thanks! I still have much to learn, I'd hoped going gluten-free would be a magic bullet and I'm learning my system is still very sensitive which is overwhelming and discouraging at times. Thanks for the yogurt tip! There is comfort in knowing that this is common during early healing and I'm not alone!

Thanks so much for the response. Are you usually able to pinpoint a trigger when you get the pain again? What I didn’t share in my earlier post is that I also usually eat out on weekends (though I share celiacs/needs to be gluten-free) and I’ve also been under a lot of stress lately in my personal life. While I’m speculating that it’s the wine it could certainly be a number of things. Do you ever notice the pain more when you are stressed? Learning so much about the brain/gut connection and celiacs. Thanks, there is comfort in hearing others have experienced similar symptoms.

This was my main symptom. I still get it from time to time. Also feels like a burning pain on the upper abdomen. I think the wine could definitely cause the pain to be worse. There are do many things I still can't eat.

Yes and this is true of gluten free ready made, processed and prepackaged foods in general. In particular, hard to digest polysaccharides are commonly used in these products that give many celiacs issues and I personally don't handle some emulsifiers well. IMO, reactions to these ingredients are often mistaken for a gluten reaction.
