I like Franz Gluten Free bread, which is available at my local Costco. Food For Life and Little Northern Bakehouse (advertisers here) also make excellent gluten-free breads.

Hi Scott, I found the Franz gluten-free bread less than ideal flavor wise and a very short shelf-life. Since then, my (WinCo) store has offered Canyon Bakehouse gluten-free bread in Honey White and& Grain. Also gluten-free 100% whole grain Everything and Plain Bagels in the freezer case near the birthday cakes. Better flavor and seem to last very well in the freezer. Still nothing I'm going to look forward to for a sandwich, but at least I have something to pick up my egg yolk with.

This same store recently discontinued Aqua Star Frozen breaded cod filets, the only gluten-free prepared fish in the store. I emailed them and got a polite and heart felt "Kick rocks" reply.

Since the Franz Gluten Free is vacuum sealed I haven't had any issues with shelf life. Very few GF breads are sealed in vacuum packaging. I also like Canyon Bakehouse, but it is much more expensive than Franz, which I get for about $5 a loaf (a price that is comparable to some of Costco's high end wheat breads).

I really like Canyon Bakehouse for the brioche rolls and burger buns.
BFree has great baguettes and the sliced bread is great too. My favorite is the oat loaf.
Both brands are available at Walmart.

My grocer (WinCo) doesn't stock those CB items. I work hard to avoid Walmart.

Shar has good breads.  I like the darker grain bread and it costs just a bit less than CB bread that is also good. Shar has bagels that, when toasted, are quite good with cream cheese.   I will have to look for Franz at Costco and try it.  Both the Shar and CB breads toast well.  Trader Joes has gluten-free bread and bagels.  Whole Foods has gluten-free multigrain bread but I get that less often because there is not a WF less than 40 miles from the city in which I live. And, here's a suggestion that's not bread but good tasting and gluten-free - Energy Bars at Costco, a good supplement to your diet.  And, finally, for treats, Kind bars are gluten free!!

Unless you live in the western US, you likely will not find Franz products in your stores.

Has anyone tried BFree Bread? It doesn't have a great shelf life unless it is refrigerated. Publix used to sell it. You can buy it online but I haven't done that yet. No sliced bread but rolls and PITA bread.

I think Bfree does now offer a sour dough gluten free loaf bread. I believe I bought some at Costco back this spring.

For gluten-free bread and bagels, try Whole Foods, Trader Joe's, or Sprouts. Popular brands include Udi's, Glutino, and Rudi's. For lunch meat, check out Boar's Head, Applegate, or Wellshire Farms. Don't worry about making your own - it can be tough!

Boar's Head is good when I occasionally buy it. But right now - Sept 2024 - I would be extra careful since they found listeria in their meat plants. Check to see if the packages in your area are affected.

I get the Canyon Heritage Style Wholegrain sometimes the Honeywhite. Their heritage style is about the size and texture of rye bread.  Keep it in the freezer and nuke two slices for a minute then cool on a wood cutting board.  Good for roast beef, ham and swiss and hamburgers.

I love BFree. I can find it at my Walmart stores. I’m in Texas and here I can also find it at HEB. The oat loaf is so good. Sourdough is good too. I’m finding they have a longer shelf life, months. I typically buy several and freeze into portions so I can take out what I need. If you can order online I would definitely try that.

I forgot - the baguettes are fantastic! They are skinny but I use them as a baguette but I also slice and bake them as a crostini. Friends have no idea it’s gluten free.

Are you aware of the big flap created recently by the testing Mom's of America had done on Trader Joe's bagels that showed they were way out of tolerance with regard to the 20ppm FDA standard for using "Gluten Free" claims? There was a big story that surface on this forum recently if you care to search for it. I would not recommend Trader Joe's as a safe place to buy gluten-free products at the current time.

I need to correct something I wrote earlier this thread.  The energy bars from Costco no longer have the Gluten Free certification on their labels.  It disappeared sometime this year.  The ingredients do not contain wheat, rye or barley but this product is processed in a facility where they also process items with wheat.  I assume this is the problem.  I have called them (CA) but they have not returned my call.  Lesson: read the label on the product every time you purchase it; it can change!

I was in love with BFree Baguettes but recently I found Against the Grain Rosemary Baguettes at my local Natural Grocers. I was not sure at first. At this store, it was in the frozen section. Once I got it home and opened, the bread texture looked a little weird. Then I tasted it...Unbelievable! I used to love real sourdough in the old wheat days, and I have to say this is the first gluten-free bread I have had that feels similar to a sourdough. Lightly crunchy outside, soft and chewy inside. This size of this baguette is equivalent to a regular wheat flour baguette. FIVE STARS!!!

I'm not yet diagnosed, seeing a GI March 4th I'm keeping a food diary and yesterday I went to play cards at a friends house and ate things I don't ordinarily eat- mainly a bunch of those mini chocolates that ppl typically give out at Halloween (hershey kisses, mr goodbar. milkway, snickers) I ate er... too many.  also had a tiny bit of some kind of creamy salad dressing on raw veggies.  I had SOO much pain last night in my feet- burning, numbness and pain in my feet and ankles, and a bit less so in my knees. Lasted for hours, kept me up half the night at the same time, the trouble with constipation that I've had ever since being put on the chlorthalidone, has started to improve but then gets worse again...and I can't figure out what is making it worse and what is helping it   it is like my entire digestive tract just shuts down.   Before finding out that I may have a renal calcium leak, I did not use fortified plant milks and did not consume dairy. Since being told to consume 1000-1200 mgs of calcium from food per day- I switched to fortified soy and almond milk and added some non fat or low fat plain yogurt (It is very hard to get that much  calcium from other sources without eating an enormous amt of food- I'm 70 and just can't eat that much. I'm already seeing my weight creep up which is disturbing)   I am seeing that ppl with celiac can have issues with dairy- what would those issues be? Did I get glutened yesterday unknowingly or does chocolate or that tiny bit of salad dressing I had have gluten in it?   My feet are fine this morning! thank goodness but the pain was excruciating last night.   I don't know what to do.  I am thinking that I should ditch the dairy  (which I never really wanted to consume in the first place) and maybe anything with calcium carbonate in it (that is very constipating for me) not only has my GI system slowed down, my stools are strange-  round and often float. This so so different from what used to be my normal (on the Bristol stool score it was in the ideal range) I will go several times a day - these meatball sized round floaters I don't know if I'm still dealing with the after affects of the chlorthalidone (which has a very long half life- my last dose of that was Feb 9th or 11th - I'll have to look that up but I think it's been almost a week.   I just want all this pain and discomfort to stop. but I don't know where it's coming from. those 12 days on gluten have just wrecked my whole system it seems.   any ideas what I might do to help things get back to normal?

No they just said stop all supplements two weeks before. Its so frustrating im not at all happy with my "care team",because im not being seen for my sibo infact my appointment was dropped, I even asked about it and they said Dr prescribed you meds and I stated yes but I again had a reaction.I feel bothersome. I need to find another gi but its useless because its going to be same thing around here.i just feel lost and in tbe medical file they are writing what ever and its really not ok. In fact i dont want to go unless they record the conversation. Yes its that bad.im only having  care and concern for my ms whose Not part of the same health association that pcp and gi are with.I will have to look into changing to another. Mayo clinic is great but its the celiac, sibo, ect and all related issues that need addressed but current " careteam says call when needed. No plans of scheduled dates

@science enthusiast Christi, It could be Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO).  Lots of people with Celiac develop it, especially if they eat a high carbohydrate diet.   Colonic bacteria crawl into the small intestine and ferment the excess carbohydrates and prebiotic fibers which causes lots of gas.   I changed my diet to the Autoimmune Protocol Diet (AIP), a Paleo diet, and supplemented with a B Complex and Benfotiamine, a form of Thiamine that helps heal the intestines and has antibacterial properties.  I had improvement within a few days.  The AIP diet starves out the carbohydrate loving SIBO bacteria and allows more beneficial bacteria a chance to repopulate. Hope this helps.
