I got the results of my bloodwork today.

So the only mineral that was elevated was copper. <_<

Everything else was going in the opposite direction but not all were deficient. Actually only one was severely deficient (in the red). That was selenium. :o

Not good. Selenium is probably the most important mineral for detoxing mercury....studies show that it binds with mercury. Its also used to make glutathione.

Carla...I'm not really celebrating my cold. I'm wanting it to get lost....like NOW. :P

I got a party to go to this weekend...I even got a new dress......this cold is not invited!!

I think its because I was out late Friday night standing around in the freezing cold without enough clothes on. By the time I got inside the house I was feeling pretty numb from the cold.

Its a wake-up call....apparantly I'm not "invincible" when it comes to catching a cold. I was really starting to think I could fight off anything. :P

Rachel, I guess not so surprising about the copper. Interesting, I was put on slenium to help with the copper toxicity and other metals. So now I know why.

Glad you got all these little clues back to help with what you do next.

Sorry about your cold too, I must have missed your post about this....hope it goes away before your party this weekend :)

Rachel,

I suppose the next question is whether you can tolerate selenium or not.

My doctor wanted me on selenium a couple years ago. I didn't stay on it, so it might be beneficial for me to check into that again too.

Question...

When you guys are feeling tired, etc. but have things you need to get done, do you just rest and not do the things? Or do you push through and do the things you need to do, and rest later?

I'm trying to force myself to do school work, because I MUST get it done, but I just can't seem to get out of bed. <_<

if its pure laziness -fight it. But if it has to do with your health always ,always listen to your body it knows better than your head

miamia Rookie
I generally put rest as the priority.

As soon as you are feeling better, Kassandra, you will blow through all that school work. For the time being, getting enough rest, as much as your body tells you you need, is the most important thing. It could make treatment go faster, so you can get back to your life sooner. It's okay to push a little, but not too much and too often.

That cold must be going around all over the country. My ears are clogged, my throat hurts, and I have a real nasty cough. Doc said it sounds like an infection .... but my current drugs should take care of it. If it's not better by Thursday when I go home, I'll call him Fri. about rotating in something different for a few days.

I hope you feel better soon, Rachel, and congratulations on getting a cold! LOL

You wouldn't believe how tan I'm getting. B)

ok yes it is I have a cold for the first time in about 3 or 4 years - its freakingme out I don't remember what the hell i am supposed to do

Yes and Carla had great advice too. :)

As someone who has a history of ignoring my body's request for rest, I will say LISTEN, okay I shouted.:lol:

I opened a restaurant on Monday and it is consuming all of my energy, I don't know if I am really up to what is required and so this topic is very pertinent to me. :) I do have help and I am trying to pace myself, it means the rinne bars are about to hit the market in a small way. Wahhhhhoooooooo, I am having a lot of fun.

I think of you all, I may not be here but you are in my heart, I don't know that I would be able to do this without the support and scientificness of this board.

Me too! I am hispanic/Italian...I'm supposed to be dark, lol. I'm very pale.

Well, I am a fair-skinned blonde ... a tan for me an a tan for you are most likely very different things, LOL. I get pretty tan for as fair as I am .... my skin gets darker than my hair .... but that's not saying much!

So the only mineral that was elevated was copper. <_<

Well, it's nice to have a blood test confirm what you were thinking .... <_<

Carla...I'm not really celebrating my cold. I'm wanting it to get lost....like NOW. :P

Yes, I know what you mean. I really didn't want this bug in FL with me .... it's still lingering! I think I'll have to switch meds for my ear .... it's not letting up at all and has hurt for two weeks now. It's not holding me back as much as the Lyme did, but it's certainly cramping my style. :P

Sorry about your cold Carla, but it's a little hard to feel sorry for you being where you are :P I am so jealous!!! Where are you in Mexico??

Hope all that sun takes your cold away :D

I'm in Marco Island, FL at a business convention with Adam. :D This is the same convention that we went to in Phoenix, AZ last year.

I think if this bug was all viral, it would be gone by now. The doctor said it sounded like an upper respiratory infection and said we might need to switch off meds if it didn't clear up. It should clear up with the Levaquin and it would be rare not to, but if it's resistant we need to use something else.

I don't see how it could not be resistant! After all, I came down with it while on Levaquin!

ok yes it is I have a cold for the first time in about 3 or 4 years - its freakingme out I don't remember what the hell i am supposed to do

Rest, fluids. I'm sorry, it's stinks.

Since so many of us seem to have this cold, it must be able to be passed on over the internet.

WOOHOOO! Congratulations!!!

Me too! I am hispanic/Italian...I'm supposed to be dark, lol. I'm very pale.

Uh, I don't have any hispanic, Italian, or any other dark skinned ancestry! I normally use one of the lightest shades of foundation to give you an idea of how pale I normally am .... I might look tan next to you and Kassandra right now though. B) But if you guys got out in the sun for about an hour, you'd pass me up.

It just dawned on my last night ... I spent 4 hours outside by the pool yesterday (11-11:30 in the sun, 2-4 PM in the shade, 4-6PM in the sun). Last year that would have sent me to bed for at least the rest of the day. I was completely heat/sun intolerant last year. :)

Wow--all you guys with this killer cold....I had it in February and it lasted for 2 weeks. The worst cold I've had in years--I actually thought it might be the flu but I don't think it actually was.

The cough lasted almost a month--I thought I'd never get over that!

Don't think I cought it over the internet, though :P

Rachel, I guess not so surprising about the copper. Interesting, I was put on slenium to help with the copper toxicity and other metals. So now I know why.

Yeah...I'm not surprised about the copper at all. I dont really want to try to use supplements to bring it down because I think my mineral transport is all messed up anyway. The DMPS seemed to work really well....and I think thats why I started to feel better after the first few treatments.

I've read that a person with mercury toxicity should avoid supplementing copper. I wish I had known that!

Mercury totally messes up copper metabolism and I might actually be deficient...I dont know how to know for sure but it seems like until things improve with the mercury its best to keep copper down low....otherwise it just increases toxicity in the body. I think thats why I gradually became more sensitive once I started mineral IV's.

I dont think selenium can help me much as far as getting the metals out...but it can definately help improve detoxification.

From what I've been reading it seems like selenium totally protects against mercury toxicity when taken at the same time of exposure....but only when they're taken together. It doesnt chelate mercury once its already deposited in tissue though.

Methyl mercury in fish doesnt seem to cause toxicity when the fish is also high in selenium. So the selenium protects against mercury toxicity.

I'm not sure if it can help with other metals....or if it can bring copper down. I know that zinc and molybdenum are both used to drive copper levels down because they are antagonists to copper.

This is some of the info. the lab sent with my results.

seleniums main role as an enzyme activator is:

1: activation of the enzyme T4 to T3 for balance in thyroid hormone

2: activation of glutathione peroxidase

A deficiency of selenium can lead to increased susceptibility to viral infections. I read somewhere else that it increases susceptibility to coxsackie virus in particular. Thats interesting because I did have that virus show up in muscle testing and it was included in my LED treatment for viruses.

Also, increased inflammation during infection or following exposure to xenobiotics or oxidant chemicals, hardening or sclerosing of tissue, muscle pain and tenderness and possibly hypothyroid function with subnormal T3.

I'm definately sensitive to xenobiotics (man-made chemicals) and I definately have constant inflammation. Hopefully supplementing selenium can help with some of it.

I dont think the selenium will help me get rid of the metals by itself but hopefully it can help in other areas which ultimately might improve my situation. The minerals definately need to be balanced for everything to work well.

Selenium, if given during mercury exposure, can delay or prevent mercury toxicity symptoms. However, studies vary with species and the type of mercury compound used. Selenium tended to decrease kidney mercury, but increased mercury deposition in the liver and brain. Selenium administered after mercury exposure probably cannot increase elimination of mercury.

I suppose the next question is whether you can tolerate selenium or not.

I'm already taking some but its a cheap brand with additional ingredients. I do well with the clean hypoallergenic stuff but I was impatient and just wanted to start taking some now. I gotta look for some online.

awww...even if you're not here you are in our hearts as well. :)

Well, it's nice to have a blood test confirm what you were thinking .... <_<

Yeah...and its about time! :P

I had alot of anxiety driving over to pick up the results. I was worried everything would appear normal and I'd be more confused than ever. So I'm really happy that the high copper was confirmed.

I remember that. thats great that you can tolerate the sun/heat now!! :D

The phlegm is the worst part of this cold. Im actually able to breathe a little tit better the last 2 days, but i was so miserable for the first week and half of this cold.

Everyone,

I got my humaworm yesterday, but now im afraid to take it lol. I need to figure out when i will have a few days to do nothing just in case i react. But I dont think i even have one day that i can do nothing lol.

I had a nightmare again last night...that we were being robbed. But I kept telling my family that I needed to eat some fat for my mepron!  It was a very scary dream. :( And the other part of the dream was that we got blood results back, and my hemoglobin was 12, which I freaked out about.

Hi Rachel - I have no idea if this is even possible with your thyroid meds...but can they be compounded? A compounding pharmacist may be able to make the meds without any corn ingredients.

Well I've been struggling for quite some time now. It doesnt matter what I eliminate I'm still sick. Its like it HAS to be something that is constantly in my system because I havent had a single symtom-free day for over 3 years now. Even when I limit myself to 2 safe foods I'm still having symptoms so basically nothing has worked. All meds or supplements have worsened my symptoms. All gluten-free packaged foods bother me. I toatlly eliminated casein and still have problems. It was only one supplement I was taking that had milk in it so I stopped taking it...felt better...started eating more foods and totally symptomatic again.

I was eating Enjoy Life chocolate chips with no problems..also did some baking...no problems. I had one cake mix with all safe ingredients and reacted. The mix only had like 4 ingredients and I tolerate all of them...the only questionable ingredient is Xanthan gum. Its also in every gluten-free product I've reacted to and also rice milks and almond milks and a ton of other stuff I cant have. I found out its from CORN. I never thought about corn...but its in everything. Even when I'm only eating meat and veggies (no corn) I'm still having corn everyday in my thyroid meds and any supplements or vitamins I've ever taken most likely have corn.

Pre gluten-free I never ate much candy or sweets....my favorite snacks were popcorn and Tostitos. These were also the first foods I started avoiding long before I ever heard of gluten because the next day I always had a swollen face and a migraine. I had thought it was from the salt or something. I thought everything was thyroid related since I had Graves so I started avoiding all salt.

I did some research on corn and its in pretty much everything...seems more difficult to avoid then both gluten and dairy. Today at work (I work in a grocery store) I started reading all the labels of the foods I used to eat before I got sick. They ALL have corn. Its in bread, soups, microwave dinners, yogurts, cheese (why is corn in cheese?). Anyways, I've never been corn-free because of my thyroid meds and lots of other things I've tried over the last year. I had posted about getting "glutened" by all the gluten-free cereals. Well they are all corn based....DUH. I dont know why I never thought of this since everything I've had problems with have some form of corn in them.

I really need to eliminate the corn to see if I get better but dont know how I can do this when I need to take thyroid pills everyday. What do people do in a situation like this? What if I'm intolerant to corn all this time and its in the medication I need to take?

The other big question is am I really intolerant to gluten and dairy? If I get better off corn I dont know what to think about that. All the foods that have gluten also have corn so I would likely have to stay off gluten anyways....hmmm...does pizza have corn in it?

Also yogurt and ice cream really mess me up but they also have corn. There ARE some brands and flavors that dont have corn so I would LOVE to not have a problem with dairy!!

I would rather be intolerant to corn and gluten both than have to give up dairy for good.

Does anyone have a corn intolerance? Could I have just developed this out of nowhere and NOT have gluten intolerance...or is it more likely that gluten caused this to happen in the first place? I'm actually hoping I'm corn intolerant cuz as hard as it seems I've been struggling a long time now. The symptoms I've gotten from the stuff I've eaten with xanthan gum are severe....also I had powdered sugar yesterday and had another severe reaction. I have no reaction to cane sugar but when I looked at the ingred. of the powdered stuff its cane suger AND corn starch! Right now I feel exactly like I felt before I ever went gluten-free...everything hurts. :( This would explain why I dont do well with anything processed or with any supplements or vitamins or medications.

I dont see too many people here with corn problems but hopefully someone has some advice about the thyroid meds??

Hello Rachel:) I too experienced the problems you discuss...what I have found out is it's not corn, but systemic candida....the sugar in corn feeds the candida. Basically if you avoid sugar, then you should be able to eat corn. I had a antibody test performed and discovered immune antibodies to casein, soy and eggs. I was diagnosed Celiac sprue 2 weeks ago after a LONG 20 years of suffering from terrible symptoms. There are excellent Yeast Cleanse products in the health food store. I take Solary and have noticed considerable relief, FINALLY. I removed sugar. That's a must. Good luck. :)

Although the gluten challenge guidelines suggest at least two weeks of at least 10g of gluten daily, I would go for 4 weeks to make sure - if you can tolerate it, that is. When you go in for the blood draw, make sure to ask your physician to order not only the tTG-IGA test but the total IGA test. The tTG-IGA test result cannot be trusted if you are IGA deficient. The total IGA test checks for IGA deficiency. Many physicians will order only the tTG-IGA. So, at the minimum, the doc should order the tTG-IGA and the total IGA. There are other celiac antibody tests that can also be ordered for a more comprehensive panel, especially in the case of IGA deficiency.  Here is an overview of celiac disease antibody testing:
    • trents
She carries one of the two primary genes that indicate the potential to develop celiac disease. About 40% of the general population carries one or both of these genes but only about 1% of the general population develops celiac disease. So, the gene test cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease but it can be used as a rule out measure. Having either one of the genes provides the potential for developing celiac disease with the HLADQ2, in my understanding, providing the strongest potential of the two while having both genes provides an even stronger potential. What meds did the physician put her on for the ulcers?
    • kim-d
Thanks, @trents. That was what I was thinking of as well, but I'm a huge worrier and keep doubting if it was right thing to do so it seemed better to ask more experienced people. My diet won't be 100% gluten free unfortunately, but I'm thinking of using it as an opportunity to keep a food log and try to see what makes things worse.
    • jjiillee
Her Dr gave her meds for the ulcers and recommend the genetic blood test to rule out celiac. Got those results and the hla-dq2 is positive the hla-dq8 is negative. So I’m not sure what this all means. Waiting to hear from the Dr again. She has been eating gluten and did say she got bad stomach pain again the other day but it hasn’t happened in a few weeks so I’m not sure if it’s from gluten or the ulcers.
    • Soleihey
I have been on supplementation for almost 11 months with no deficiencies showing up on blood work. So was just hoping to hear someone else’s story where it took longer to heal.
