Water.

We have an Everpure system with a charcoal filter, it has a separate tap at the sink and has provided what I thought was good water but now I am beginning to wonder. I drank distilled water for years without a problem but kept hearing that overall it wasn't good for you because of the lack of minerals and we switched to this system about three years ago. That is also about the time I started having arthritic pain which I now know is Ankylosing Spondylitis and is one of those cascade diseases that comes with Celiac. I'm going to look into this but I am also going to go and get some distilled water and try that for a few days.

It is astonishing to me the level of vigilance required to deal with this. This place is fabulous.

I'm sorry I missed the party again. :(

I was looking at the Fructose Intolerance information and it sounded a lot like me and that took me to some information about Colitis that also sounded a lot like me and I was feeling like one of the three sailors lost at sea with a medical dictionary my mother had told me about, "by the time they were rescued they had all the diseases" which I suppose is supposed to be a funny story but if the person who is telling you the story has been telling you for over 30 years that she is sick and nobody can tell her what is wrong somehow it doesn't feel funny. :( The colitis didn't sound funny either, especially since what drew my attention was rectal bleeding which has been happening and has happened before. My regular doctor has suggested it is probably just hemorrhoids located higher up, not regular hemorrhoids but given everything else that is going on I wonder.

I went looking at the diet, then I thought about how it would be gluten free and then starch free, for the Ankylosing Spondylitis and then fructose free..... I gave up, I made a pot of white rice, ate some with ghee and went to sleep. It seems like every time I slay one dragon, another or three appear.

Vincent-we had a short discussion about water on the thread for Megan/TCA/Tanya- Zack, my youngest, has had a problem with water with chlorine or fluoride all his life. There were a number of interesting posts on that thread from others regarding water. It is scary some of the things we ingest unknowingly. btw--great news about the adoption. I wish I could adopt, but at 45, I don't think it is something I can do. Hubby is 57, so I think we are just going to wait for grandkids.

I have personaly tested our water, and after filtration there is no colorine in it at all. Before our filter, its VERY high, higher then you would use in a pool actually! As a side note, if you do not have a filter and you want ot remove the clorine from you water, fill and pitcher with water and set it in the sun for a while, the clorine will evaporate out.

I was reading up on how they make activated charcole and they could be using wheat in that. I will have to see if I can find out more from the ppl that make the filters.

I have a home water distiller, prehaps its time to pull it aout again...or I could install a reverse osmosis filter. Not as cheap though....

I've been thinking about this water connection--the thing that first made me think about it was that last weekend, we went to Syracuse to visit family. I was born there and lived there for 32 years. The first day there, I didn't feel the need to "go" at all (!) The second day, I went once in the morning, and had none of my usual lower abdominal discomfort. I never really connected the dots until 2 days ago. Vincent, thanks for looking into the activated charcoal. I really appreciate everyone's input! Andrea, I'll remember about the Aqufina. The Kinesiologist I saw in 2004 told me to either get a reverse-osmosis water filter or to drink Poland Spring. He said not to ever drink tap water--that's when I started drinking bottled water around 2 years ago. I figured with the new fridge/filter, I wouldn't need to do the bottled anymore. The thing I don't get is, why is my system so sensitive? It seems like just about everything sets it off in one way or another.

OKAY this is what we gonna do, we gonna set up for a WATER CHALLANGE :o

Today Im gonna pick up some poland water to amek his juice with, and use unfiltered tap water for the rest. If his diapers look fine in say a week, we will try from the filter again and see what happens. If it turns out to be the filter, then I'll look in the cost of installing an RO and get my son a floride rx. If not I'll send Patti the bill for the bottled water. B)

We will need to PM him - - - this thread is just a little intimidating and long to jump in the middle of  esp. for a guy as it's such an estrogen-fest!

Good thing we have Picard and Vincent - - am I missing anybody else??

:lol::lol::lol:

Evie - Outstanding 60 years.

So good morning to all. I leave for the night and come back to a long string of notes. I too like the rain, indoor activities can be fun. :D However, we have had constant consistent rain now for weeks. Typically, nice during the week and rainy on the weekend. :(

We have to check off for a little while, need to get some work done.

Jean-Luc Rookie
DO YOU THINK THERE"S AN ALIEN IN THERE??

Ok, now the only thing that comes straight to mind is Sigourney Weaver in Alien. Or maybe Sissy Spacek in Rosemary's Baby.

Good Morning Picard... you're working on a Saturday? <_< That doesn't seem fair!

I have to pay the bills.

What is Poland water? Is that a brand, like Aquafina? I went and bought some Aquafina this morning and I am committed to the "water challenge".

Jean-Luc Rookie
Rinne,

I was wondering the same thing  I haven't gone to the store yet but when I do I was going to look for that brand name.

I believe Poland refers to Poland Spring Water. It is popular in the Northeast as it is a "Product of Maine".

We had a kitchen defender we purchased and installed a few months back. It is a three stage since our water is not that good. I'll have to call the guy and find out about the charcoal stuff. I'll update when I get some answers. :)

Patti and Celia...you guys are too much.

Susan,

Are you feeling any better today?

Are you feeling any bette today?

bah no Poland Spring water in my store, and an RO system would be $160 for the unit and then $150 for new filters ever 6months. Way out of my reach. Hrm. Wonder if store brand distilled water be okay, although they usally run those through an activated carbon filter too. Hrm. I guess I should try and call the maker of our fridge filters and see if I can get any good info. Prbly not...

Rachel, I keep picturing your jumping intestines.....wouldn't you be able to FEEL them if they were doing that? I mean, sounds like that would produce intense cramping, and I can't remember if you were feeling the cramping during the exam or not - I know there was intense pain when she pressed on your ovary area - -

I wasnt feeling any jumping going on at the time of the exam....I was just bloated and had that ovary pain...probably from the pressure. The next day there was alot of gurgling and rumbling going on and the d to go with it....I had cramping alot yesterday but it wasnt going on during the exam on Thurs.. She was seeing something that I wasnt feeling yet. She said my bowels were extremely overactive like maybe they were trying to digest something? Maybe whatever it was that didnt digest well anded up causing the pain and d??

DO YOU THINK THERE"S AN ALIEN IN THERE??

 Thats totally what I was thinking when I was watching her facial expressions...the way she was looking at the machine made me think something bizzare was going on.

Um, who is this guy that y ou're calling - what page is he on - I want to call him too and feel better....:rolleyes:

I dunno what page he is on.

He's the pharmacist that compounded the meds I'm taking for healing my gut. :)

If you like heat, just head on down to the good ol' Central Valley right now - - but I don't know if you'd like it so much!

I live in the Central Valley....I do like it that much. :D

Andrea,

I had an upset stomach all night, cramping, gas, etc. Woke up with d again. :(

Good thing is I think I figured out the cause. After my obgyn appt. Thurs. I went to whole foods and I bought some peanut butter. I dont ever eat nut butters but I dunno....I was craving it I guess. Maybe it was the alien baby inside me telling me to get it.

I ate some that night and woke up with the d and all the stomach problems I had yesterday. It finally calmed down late in the afternoon yesterday and I even had a formed stool. All day when my stomach hurt the thought of peanut butter made me want to vomit. Once I started feeling better I wanted it again. Damn alien baby!

I ate more last night and within an hour I was bloated again and burping. :(

I have the exact same stomach problems again. How stupid am I ??

I cant digest fats well at all...is peanut butter a fat? I'm thinking it is since its got all that oil in it.

Its not the cause of my intestines doing that dance cuz I didnt buy it until after my appt. I'm sure eating peanut butter when my intestines were already in distress just intensified the problem.....especially since I dont digest fats well on a normal day when I'm feeling good...let alone during a time when I'm having a reaction. I'm blaming it all on the alien baby. :P

What water is good for drinking? I drink bottled water but I dont think they are that pure. I drink Arrowhead and Crystal Geyser...stuff like that. I've never heard of Poland brand? I dont think its available where I live. :(

What brands are good? I drink distilled water alot too cuz I think its probably better than the other stuff. I want to get the purest stuff? Any recommendations besides the Poland kind??

Rachel--Do you think you could have a problem with legumes? Although, it could be the concentrated fat--I can eat raw almonds fine, but almond butter will send me to the bathroom very quickly (it literally goes right thru me)

Patti,

I cant eat any nut butters. I tried almond butter, hazelnut butter, cashew butter...etc. I never feel good after but I never got all the burping and d from them. I havent had any in a long time and this time I got good ol peanut butter since all the other ones messed me up. All beans get me bloated. Peanuts are a bean right? Are beans harder to digest? <_<

I don't think it's Rosemary's baby, but we could ask her if there's a coven of people chanting in the next room and making her eat weird things.... (Rachel's probably too young to remember that fantastic movie)

Yup.

I think black beans fall into the easier to digest category and never eat kidney beans that aren't thoroughly cooked, they can make you really sick.

My stomach has been worse the last couple of days and I am sure it is because I have been pushing the limits and eating things that my tummy is not really up for, I wonder if that is true for you too Rachel?

Andrea, yes thank you dear, I am feeling a bit better. A good night's sleep sometimes does wonders. Did I mention that I am also menstrual  (sorry gentlemen) and that just accents the craziness in a really SOO-PER way!

Celia - - - your picture is gorgeous - - - my own picture inspires me to remember what I once was, and what I might be again (won't do the really dangerous climbs any more though - insanity).

the water thing......am drinking lots more water these days as we have to stay hydrated, and I am sweating like heck in morning gardening. So, much more tap water mixed in with regular. Must watch this and see.

So good morning and good day to all! :)

Rachel, I hope you know I am only joking around about the movie references. Have you seen Rosemary's Baby (1968)? Oh heck, have you seen Alien (1979)?

Now, Rosemary's Baby was before my time, but I have seen it a few times. Very weird watching the devil come out of the coal miner's daughter. Alien, the first one is classic.

Info on fat malabsorption:

"Some causes of Malabsorption-

Acutely abnormal intestinal lining due to an acute intestinal infection, overuse of antibiotics, alcohol

Abnormal intestine lining present in Crohns and Celiac

Unbalanced flora, bacterial overgrowth, parasites

Inadequate gastric mixing due to the presence of a fistula

Impaired transport of enzymes

Fat Malabsorption indicators include large volume stool and weight loss, fat globules are present in stool with microscopic examination (stool analysis).

With fat malabsorption the stools are greasy, soft but not liquid, foul smelling and bulky. Growth failure is a dominant feature, because the intestinal loss of high-energy fat nutrients (9 kcal/g of fat) leads to a profound deficiency in the total calories absorbed daily."

There is also the legume angle that patti mentioned with peanuts, also they have a very high toxic mold content.

:lol::lol: The alien baby! That just gets me every time!:lol::lol:

When you mention gas station bathrooms it made me think of all the broohaha about Britney Spears walking bare foot in and out of a gas station bathroom. First of all I would never go into one, and then to walk bare foot?? OMgosh I have the same phobia about germs in public places, hotels....

I live in the Central Valley....

I don't really know what is where in Cali, as far as geography, is there only 1 Valley? Is this where the term Valley Girls came from?

NOt a good evening with my bro and the girls and the pot of spaghetti.... :( I am always trying to mend things with my family, damage I have caused all the years of my youth and into my thirties, I was the best auntie, but then, during mania and depression, I was awful, add to that my brother married a woman 26 years ago who doesn't remotely "get" me and in fact, she looks at me as if I AM AN ALIEN....long story I wont' go into now but no, I came home and sobbed from that debacle..... :(

barefoot in the gas station.....can you imagine......I use paper towels to touch anything in there...have actually wretched at the smell and sights of things in the particularly bad ones....

The Valley Girls movie is in San Fernando Valley, southern California. We are in the San Joaquin Valley, and that combined with Salinas Valley (near Monterey and central coast) produces much of hte nation's food. Bloody stinking hot here.....but the San Joaquin valley, in the middle of the state, extends about, what, 200 miles? Rachel is in the north end, I am smack in the midle of the state. It's actually a desert here, but wtih the irrigation we steal (a very precarious state, BTW) from other sources, they made it into civilization.

Okay, enough geography for today, need more coffee and some ibuprofen.

Julie - - where to you live?

Welcome to the forum, Linda! Many on this forum can sympathize with you. It can be extremely difficult to get reliable information about gluten when it comes to meds, supplements and oral hygiene products. This is especially true since so much of this stuff is generic and comes from over seas. I will deflect with regard to your question about meds and oral products but take you in another direction. Have you tried a low iodine diet. Iodine is known to exacerbate dermatitis herpetiformis and some find that a low iodine diet helps reduce the number of outbreaks. By the way, have you had your celiac antibodies retested recently? If they are elevated that might be a clue that you are getting gluten in your oral hygiene products or meds.

Hi. I’m 70 years old, and a 22 year survivor of head and neck cancer treated with chemo-radiation, which resulted in non-existent submandibular salivary glands and extreme dry mouth and altered oral mucosa. I have been using dry mouth toothpaste, Rx oral dentrifices and moisturizers for years.  I’ve recently been diagnosed with severe celiac dermatitis herpetiformis. I was being treated with oral Dapsone, but it was not effective and I developed some serious side effects. So, the medication was stopped and I was started on Doxycycline (another antibiotic) for inflammation. I’ve been using Rx Betamethasone steroid ointment with little to no effect. I have tried every oral and topical antihistamine treatment available OTC. None have touched this horrible relentless itching. That is my history.  Now to my question. Does anybody know about gluten free toothpastes and mouth moisturizers? I ask because a very common dry mouth brand stated to me that they were indeed gluten free. But as I am not getting any better with my dermatitis herpetiformis, I was wondering if I was getting glutenized some way other than diet as  I have been following a strict clean gluten free diet, but I am not seeing any improvement at all. So, I started looking up the toothpastes and moisturizer ingredients individually and nine (9) of the eleven (11) or so listed showed up as   containing gluten or that may have gluten! Am I getting glutenized orally by these products?  As an aside, I checked on my favorite lavender scented baby lotion which is supposed to be gluten free, but many of those ingredients when investigated separately, show they  do contain or may contain gluten as well. I stopped using the lotion. But I cannot forgo my dental care. I was unable to get any information from the manufacturer of my current brand of chewable multivitamins either. They told me to check with my doctor. If THEY don’t know what’s in their product, how do they think a PCP will?  In light of all this, I am confused and angry that I might keep getting contaminated with gluten through products I am using that are supposedly gluten safe. *I should also state that I have a nickel allergy since I was about 12-13 years old. And I developed a contact allergy to latex (gloves) when I was a student nurse at 19 years old.  I know and I’m sorry that this is so lengthy. I’m trying to do everything I can to combat this condition, and I’m feeling very confused, anxious and angry about not getting adequate information as I try to educate and advocate for myself. I’m hoping someone here is more knowledgeable than me of how to navigate through all of this. Can anyone offer any advice?  Thank you for your time.  Respectfully,  Linda

Welcome to the forum, @Cathijean90! I went 13 years from the first laboratory evidence of celiac disease onset before I was diagnosed. But there were symptoms of celiac disease many years before that like a lot of gas. The first laboratory evidence was a rejected Red Cross blood donation because of elevated liver enzymes. They assume you have hepatitis if your liver enzymes are elevated. But I was checked for all varieties of hepatitis and that wasn't it. Liver enzymes continued to slowly creep up for another 13 years and my PCP tested me for a lot of stuff and it was all negative. He ran out of ideas. By that time, iron stores were dropping as was albumin and total protein. Finally, I took it upon myself to schedule an appointment with a GI doc and the first thing he did was test me for celiac disease. I was positive of course. After three months of gluten free eating the liver enzymes were back in normal range. That was back in about 1992. Your story and mine are more typical than not. I think the average time to diagnosis from the onset of symptoms and initial investigation into causes for symptom is about 10 years. Things are improving as there is more general awareness in the medical community about celiac disease than there used to be years ago. The risk of small bowel lymphoma in the celiac population is 4x that of the general population. That's the bad news is.  The good news is, it's still pretty rare as a whole. Yes, absolutely! You can expect substantial healing even after all these years if you begin to observe a strict gluten free diet. Take heart! But I have one question. What exactly did the paperwork from 15 years ago say about your having celiac disease? Was it a test result? Was it an official diagnosis? Can you share the specifics please? If you have any celiac blood antibody test results could you post them, along with the reference ranges for each test? Did you have an endoscopy/biopsy to confirm the blood test results?
    • Cathijean90
I’ve just learned that I had been diagnosed with celiac and didn’t even know. I found it on paperwork from 15 years ago. No idea how this was missed by every doctor I’ve seen after the fact. I’m sitting here in tears because I have really awful symptoms that have been pushed off for years onto other medical conditions. My teeth are now ruined from vomiting, I have horrible rashes on my hands, I’ve lost a lot of weight, I’m always in pain, I haven’t had a period in about 8-9 months. I’m so scared. I have children and I saw it can cause cancer, infertility, heart and liver problems😭 I’ve been in my room crying for the last 20minutes praying. This going untreated for so long has me feeling like I’m ruined and it’s going to take me away from my babies. I found this site googling and I don’t know really what has me posting this besides wanting to hear from others that went a long time with symptoms but still didn’t know to quit gluten. I’m quitting today, I won’t touch gluten ever again and I’m making an appointment somewhere to get checked for everything that could be damaged. Is this an automatic sentence for cancer and heart/liver damage after all these symptoms and years? Is there still a good chance that quitting gluten and being proactive from here on out that I’ll be okay? That I could still heal myself and possibly have more children? Has anyone had it left untreated for this amount of time and not had cancer, heart, fertility issues or liver problems that couldn’t be fixed? I’m sure I sound insane but my anxiety is through the roof. I don’t wanna die 😭 I don’t want something taking me from my babies. I’d gladly take anyone’s advice or hear your story of how long you had it before being diagnosed and if you’re still okay?

Genetic testing cannot be used to diagnose celiac disease but it can be used to rule it out and also to establish the potential to develop celiac disease. About 40% of the general population has the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% actually develop it. To develop celiac disease when you have the genetic potential also requires some kind of trigger to turn the latent genes "on", as it were. The trigger can be a lot of things and is the big mystery component of the celiac disease puzzle at this point in time with regard to the state of our knowledge.  Your IGA serum score would seem to indicate you are not IGA deficient and your tTG-IGA score looks to be in the normal range but in the future please include the reference ranges for negative vs. positive because different labs used different reference ranges. There is no industry standard.
